Prisons are for criminals, not disabled people! Corrections Corporation of America (NYSE: CXW) (CCA) is a company that manages public prisons and other facilities, and has concessions for many others.
"In 2006, over 7.2 million people were on probation, in jail or prison, or on parole at yearend 2006 -- 3.2% of all U.S. adult residents or 1 in every 31 adults." ~ U.S. Department of Justice
http://www.petitiononline.com/gufree2/petition.html
The company is the fifth largest prison (corrections) system in the United States, behind only 3 states and the federal government. As such, CCA manages 69,000 beds in 64 facilities, of which it owns 40 facilities, in 19 states and Washington, DC
This corporation not only imprisons people, they also manufacture license plates, small table kits (such as those sold through Wal-Mart) and other items. The worst part is that they actually sell stock for this company on Wall Street and anyone can buy it. So basically for the right price our country imprisons people, works them as slaves while they earn pennies an hour and them sell the items to unsuspecting consumers and on top of that sells them as stock...does this system sound familiar to anyone? It rings as loud as slavery in my ears!

Olympic Fundamental Principles
We hope by all of us taking a stand, the Olympic spirit will bring hope, peace and friendship for the Chinese people and true improvement in their lives. The Olympic charter states:
Fundamental Principles of Olympism:
1. Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles.
2. The goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of man, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.
3. The Olympic Movement is the concerted, organised, universal and permanent action, carried out under the supreme authority of the IOC, of all individuals and entities who are inspired by the values of Olympism. It covers the five continents. It reaches its peak with the bringing together of the world's athletes at the great sports festival, the Olympic Games. Its symbol is five interlaced rings.
4. The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practising sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play. The organisation, administration and management of sport must be controlled by independent sports organisations.
5. Any form of discrimination with regard to a country or a person on grounds of race, religion, politics, gender or otherwise is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement.
6. Belonging to the Olympic Movement requires compliance with the Olympic Charter and recognition by the IOC.
“Safeguarding the dignity of the individual is a fundamental requirement of the Olympics.”

As Charlotte-Mecklenburg's population grows each year and our relative supply of affordable housing decreases, we continue to see the numbers of homeless families and individuals swell in our community. Over 5,000 people are homeless in Mecklenburg County on any given night and tens of thousands annually
That total includes people who are living on the streets, staying in shelters and with friends and family, or living in transitional or permanent supportive housing. Nearly half are families; more than a third are children. "Street homelessness" is the image commonly presented to portray homelessness, yet less than 10 percent of the 5,000 homeless people in our region regularly live on the streets. Almost half of all homeless adults are employed.
Why not invest this kind of money into day shelters for the homeless. You could provide lifeskills classes to these people. You could provide GED classes, and work training. this would help them transition from a life of nothing into a life of something more. Finally people would be able to get back on their feet and contribute back to society. Do you really believe that people who are homeless chose to be this way? It happens because life happens, not because this is the way they choose to live. Please think about the future of Charlotte and the surrounding areas. Think about the future of our youth. Over 2,000 children in our area are homeless.A primary cause of homelessness in the Charlotte - Mecklenburg area is the shortage in the supply of affordable homes. A worker earning minimum wage no longer has sufficient income to afford a safe and decent apartment. And with regional fair market rents averaging more than $650 a month for a two-bedroom apartment, many working families are struggling to find homes within financial reach. With your help, we can ask the Mayor to help.
Ask Congress to Give Workers RESPECT
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/725819003
Millions of working men and women struggle every day to provide for their families. It's hard enough to form a union because of anti-union retaliation; workers shouldn't have to worry about government interference, too.
But last year, the National Labor Relations Board (NLR
ruled that companies can reclassify large swaths of workers as supervisors, stripping away the rights of millions of workers to form or join a union.
The very agency that is supposed to protect a worker's basic right to form a union has once again taken away those rights.
America's workers deserve the right to have a say about their working conditions, benefits, and job safety. Only Congress has the power to restore those rights.
We seem to be on the steps of WWlll, as a Nation and a World we cannot allow this to happen. Please America wake up - take a stand and defend our Founding documents, the Principles that the stand for. We need Congress to hear our plea. We need to show the World that WE THE PEOPLE not only believe in our country but will not allow her to fall.

Because of undue death and critical injury incidents in Michigan state prisons, we ask the Michigan state legislators to draft and pass a law bringing all aspects of corrections under the authority and oversight of the State of Michigan. It is apparent that contractors are disinterested in timely response to and treatment of health issues within Michigan state prisons.

We are trying to get the Governor and the Prison's to outlaw the use of Restrains in the Jails and Prison's. As a result of Jackson Prison using Restrains on my 21 year old Son in August 2006, he Died, after 4 days of lying naked and Restrained, sped eagle, to a steel table with no help.
KALAMAZOO -- The use of four-point restraints as punishment for prison inmates meets the American Medical Association's definition of torture and should be discontinued, a doctor appointed by a federal judge to monitor health care in Michigan's prisons testified Friday.
In today's Detriot Free.....Published: November 14. 2006 3:00AM
Referring to Timothy Joe Souders, the 21-year-old who died in August in an isolated cell in Jackson as "T.S.," the judge wrote: "God bless T.S. and the others." Their lives "were short, but their legacies may be long."
Enslen is enforcing federal oversight of the Jackson facilities established under the Hadix case, a civil rights class-action, brought by prisoners in 1980 to correct conditions that ultimately led to prison disturbances. It is named after one of the plaintiffs, Everett Hadix. The suit led to a consent judgment against the state Department of Corrections.
"This is an extraordinarily important decision," Elizabeth Alexander of the ACLU National Prison Project said of Enslen's 39-page opinion. She is one of three lawyers who represented prisoners in the long-running lawsuit against the corrections department for allegedly abusing prisoners' constitutional rights.

Dear Melody,
Speaker Pelosi: Make Workers’ Rights a Priority!
Pledge to Advance the Employee Free Choice Act
Last week’s election was a victory for working Americans! For the first time in more than a decade, we will have a Congress that can work for us. Feels good, doesn’t it?
Between now and the start of the next session of Congress, the Democratic Majority will chart its legislative course. Make your voice heard: ask the new Congressional leadership to make workers’ rights a top priority on its agenda.
Sign our petition to incoming Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to advance the Employee Free Choice Act.
The Employee Free Choice Act will strengthen workers’ rights and hold anti-union employers accountable. When Congress passes this important legislation, tougher penalties will be in place to protect workers whose rights are violated. Workers would have a fair, simple, direct method for organizing unions. And employers would be forced to stop dragging out contract negotiations for years and years.
Ask Speaker Pelosi to stand up for workers’ rights:
http://action.americanrightsatwork.org/campaign/efca_pledge06
Between now and the start of the next Congress, thousands of workers will be harassed, coerced, intimidated, or even fired when they try to exercise their legal rights to form unions.
These workers cannot wait any longer for Congress to act. Their jobs are on the line. They need stronger laws to protect them against discrimination and intimidation. They need a simpler, straightforward method to indicate their desire for a union. And they need a system that ends the ability for employers to delay negotiations for years and years.
We must act now to get on the radar screen of our leaders in Washington. Tell Congress’ new leader to pledge to pass the Employee Free Choice Act next year.

Thank you again for your dedication to protecting workers' rights!

Dear Supporter,
Shi Tao, a Chinese journalist and poet, logged onto his computer and sent an email. Eight months later, he was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in jail. Click here to demand his release.
In April 2004, Shi Tao sent an email to a U.S.-based pro-democracy website. In his email, he summarized a government order directing media organizations in China to downplay the 15th anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. Police arrested him and charged him with "illegally providing state secrets to foreign entities." Authorities used email account holder information supplied by Yahoo! to convict and sentence him to 10 years in prison, where he is laboring in harsh conditions and has inadequate access to medical care.
Amnesty International - backed by thousands of voices like yours - is raising our concerns with Yahoo! about their aiding human rights abuses in China. And we're demanding Shi Tao's unconditional release. Take action and help us free Shi Tao today.
Here's what Amnesty International is doing to free him and why your help is so urgently needed:
- Mobilizing thousands of our on-the-ground activists in the U.S. to fight for his freedom.
- Supporting dozens of Amnesty community chapters around the world working for his release.
- Increasing capacity of Amnesty's extensive network of programs that work on individual prisoner cases that have freed over 40,000 prisoners since 1961.
Every single action and every single gift makes a difference. Please forward this message to your network of friends and colleagues. We must make our voice heard around the world and free Shi Tao.
Sincerely,
Larry Cox
Executive Director,

Mastectomy Hospital Bill in Congress – to sign the petition you only have to give your name and zip code.
If you know anyone who has had a mastectomy, you may know that there is a lot of discomfort and pain afterwards. Insurance companies are trying to make mastectomies an outpatient procedure. Let's give women the chance to recover properly in the hospital for 2 days after surgery.
Mastectomy Bill in Congress
It takes 2 seconds to do this and is very important...please take the time and do it really quick!
There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the "drive-through mastectomy" where women are forced to go home just a few hours after surgery, against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.
Lifetime Television has put this bill on their web page with a petition drive to show your support. Last year over half the House signed on.
PLEASE!! Sign the petition by clicking on the web site below. You need not give more than your name and zip code number.
http://www.lifetimetv.com/health/breast_mastectomy_pledge.html
This takes about 2 seconds. PLEASE PASS THIS ON to your friends and family, and on behalf of all women, THANKS.
Hey everybody!! ![]()
A very dear friend of mine sent this mail to me today. If you haven't allready signed...please take a moment to! And crosspost widely.
It would mean so very much to me if you would take the time to sign this petition of mine. It is about the right of the Scanian minority people in Sweden to its own language, culture and history. This is issue that I feel so very strongly for, and I wrote this petition also as a tribute to my grandfather, who passed away one and a half year ago, and who through all his life was very passionate about these issues, and so keen on passing the Scanian culture on to his children and grandchildren. This petition is for him, and for all other Scanians who would not wish for anything more than a place to call their own. I'm aiming at 10,000 names here - it's a high goal, perhaps impossible, I know, but I couldn't settle for anything less since it is for the Swedish prime minister - so please, pay it forward to everyone you know!

Petition to ratify the UN Convention on
the Rights of the Child
Protection from abduction, abuse, exploitation, and neglect. The right not to be hungry or cold. The right to practice one's own religion. The right to live. Every child deserves these fundamental protections - everywhere and always.
The United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child is an international agreement that requires signing countries to protect the basic rights of their most vulnerable citizens - children. Our goal is to gather 25,000 petition signatures to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urging the U.S. to join the 192 countries that have already ratified the Convention.
I think I lit a candle for the children? The next page didn't show me anything and I tried 3 times, maybe I lit 3? lol.
