Boycott for Equality Oct. 8th October 04, 2004 12:04 PM

Homosexual activists organizing a "Boycott for Equality" say their planned nationwide walkout on Friday, Oct. 8, will include a "coordinated cash withdrawal from the economy." "To demonstrate the need for equality in marriage and the workplace, straight and gay supporters will each take out $80 from their local ATM," Boycott for Equality said in a press release. The cash withdrawal is intended to exhaust the cash in many ATMs, "leaving a reminder of gay economic power" to all who try to use the machines over the long Columbus Day weekend. The $80 represents the amount the average member of the Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender community contributes to the economy each day, the protest organizers said. The Oct. 8 walkout includes several economic components: a one-day work stoppage or "pink flu"; a moratorium on spending for goods and services such as gas, food and clothing, to show retailers what would happen if 7 percent of their revenue goes away; closures by sympathetic businesses to make their customers aware of how dependent Americans are upon each other; and a halt to cell phone use. Boycott For Equality describes itself as an Atlanta-based group formed specifically to promote the boycott. The website says, "We are a gay couple that has been together for almost 10 years -- longer than many heterosexual marriages. We felt profound sadness and anger when our president decided to support the writing of discrimination into the United States Constitution." The organizers say their goal is to "show the American people that GLBT people are important members of their community. Because so many of us are in the closet, the way to show our impact is to drop out of the economy to show that we are vital contributors and citizens and deserve fair and equal treatment like all members of society." *candle*  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Thank You October 04, 2004 1:17 PM

Thanks for bringing this boycott to my attention. We will follow the guidelines; this is an important protest, considering the current climate in the USA.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
