I hope you see this Mary. We get to watch two new hummingbirds hatch and grow! I can't believe this little gal has had so many babes!

It looks like the story continues!

Mary and anyone peeking in. Mama Phoebe is off the eggs for a minute; you can see the little pip in the egg. Babe is starting to peck his/her way out. So exciting!

She's back... so pretty.

I'm off to do some yardwork (after ) but will be checking in several times today. HAVE A SUPER DAY!

thanks for letting me know dear Cheryl she is looking gorgeous
3 years ago

Oh I'm so happy you spotted this, Mary. I just checked in and was really lucky to have her fly away so that we could see - one chick and one egg! The little orange spot at the front seems to be moving about... that's where babe's head is... already trying to see over the nest!

hum

Then mom flew back. She sure is gorgeous! We had a sparkling little red and green hummingbird come into the yard yesterday, so we quickly put up the nectar feeder. I hope she comes back. I'm sure glad to have you to share this with.

you are so lucky to see one up close so to speak there are so pretty birds in my garden but nothing very colourful like Phoebe

humhttp://sportsmansparadiseonline.com/Live_Hummingbird_Cam.html

Hi Mary. That little hummingbird I saw is very rare, other than a few red headed finches, we don't have really colourful birds either.

Here's the two chicks.. almost twins. I love this!

hum

Their little heads are bobbing around... waiting for food most likely.

hum

Beautiful little Phoebe feeding chicks...

hm

I would have liked to have seen her throwing the egg shells out of the nest. They looked so big compared to the chicks. What little beauties!

so sweet and so pink Phoebe is certainly kept busy

She didn't have a very long rest between nests, did she. But I guess that's what she loves to do the most.

To think that little orange beak there is going to turn into that long one! Almost looks like a little duck.

hum

Its a better light today to see all her beautiful colours.

hum

Hope you're having a nice weekend, Mary.

Hi Mary and anyone else looking in. Here`s an interesting comment from one of the chatters:

Lynda C.
They start that from the day they hatch, Lee. They are already "decorating" the nest and will soon be "decorating the leaves and branches around it. The "poohberries" on the upper rose bush stem are left over from Phoebe's 2nd clutch, Houki & Haruka. Phoebe has about 4 different nests in the rose bush and just alternates between them - renovating and rebuilding them each time.

So, she is even busier than we thought between raising her children! Wow. There`s over 1,000 people watching her right now. hum I can`t get a shot of the babes because she is sticking to the nest right now. I`ll check back later.

OK... finally got one. Look at the action there! Such squiggly and wiggly little ones. I can't believe how much they grow every day.

hum

Cheryl, I'm so intrigued by these little creatures. You are making a hummingbird album and it's fabulous. I love what you're doing. Phoebe is a miraculous little mother and so good to her many chicks.

Thanks for posting this wonderful thread! Sending big hugs to you.

isn't that fascinating a bird with four nests all going together i am learning a lot here and she decorates so beautifully lol

Hi Mary and Lynn. So nice that you joined us! They really are little miracles, aren't they! Just watching them grow so fast and turn out so beautiful is wonderous. It's also incredible to know just how tiny they are.

You can see one little beak lifting up... waiting for mom.

hum

A good feeding by mom... pic a little blurry because it's quite windy there today.

hum

Awwww...  an evening pic with this little guy trying to stay awake. He did get another good feeding when Mom got back.

They are growing so fast! Phoebe is such a wonderful little mother!  It won't be long before we'll start to see colour coming into those little feathers.

hum

Apparently their names are Joplin and Heather. I imagine "Joplin" is named in remembrance for those who died during those terrible tornadoes.

Thank you so much for Phoebe again!  And thanks for all of your eagle pictures, owl pictures and the owl cam!!

Love and big hugs.

You're sure welcome, Barbara. We're glad you are dropping in to look at them and comment. Thank you!

Hi everyone! Can you believe how much these babes have grown?! They are sure wriggling a lot.. and I saw a teeny tiny wing! I don't think their eyes are open yet.

hum

I sure love Phoebe's little babes. I wonder if the ones who have fledged stay around her in the yard. There are a number of feeders so I think they do.

Phoebe is surely the one with the fastest growing and moving on chicks

Hi all! She sure is, Mary. Every time I look at them the nest is smaller. It's good these two are about the same size.

Mom gave a good feeding here:

hum

...then back to snoozing. I still don't see their eyes open yet.

hum

Oh my gosh... they are sooooooo cute! And to think they are smaller than our little finger.

Hope you're having a super relaxing and happy SUNDAY.

Thank you so much for your pictures of Phoebe and her babies!  I just love them and show the pictures to a dear friend of mine also.

I need to go watch Phoebe's nest today!

Love and big hugs.

Oh Barbara, I'm so happy to see you join us!!  I can't wait until these babies open their eyes and start getting their coloured feathers. That won't be long as they grow so fast!

Wow, I was lucky to get this pic of Phoebe feeding Joplin and Heather just as it's getting dark there. They are really squirming around in the nest.

Hi Mary and Barbara. What a beautiful picture you got, Cheryl. Thanks for posting it. I was just watching the live stream of the babies and they are so adorable. The wind is ruffling their feathers and one of them keeps moving around, trying to get into a good position. Maybe wants to take a nap. Isn't nature wonderful?

http://sportsmansparadiseonline.com/Live_Hummingbird_Cam.html

Hi Mary, Lynn and Barbara! It's great to see you all.

I agree these little gaffers are so amazing to watch. Phoebe is an awesome little bird who works all year long (just about) to bring so many lovely hummers into the world.

I sure got a lot of activity this morn. The larger babe (Joplin) almost wriggled right out of the nest. There were little wings flapping like crazy. Also, for the 1st time I saw little eyes open and close.

hum

Colour coming along nicely in their feathers.

hum

Mom drops off more pollen and other goodies, I imagine.

hum

Joplin is smothering Heather a bit in attempt to get comfortable. Look at those teeny wings (and you can see Joplin's little open eye).

hum

I'm so amazed that even if I check in every 2nd day there that little bit more observeable growth.

I hope you all are enjoying a great day!

Oh, they're sooo cute, Cheryl. It looks as if the nest is not big enough for them. One of them keeps trying to get more comfortable and he's got no place to go.  Their beaks are getting longer. It's so amazing to watch them!

Hi Lynn... it sure does look crowded in that nest, or one could look at it as cosy and warm I suppose! It won't be long before they will look bright-eyed and fully-feathered. It truly is an amazing transformation, and little Mama Phoebe is such a precious little bird.

These were taken this morning...

hu

hu

...and this was taken this afternoon. Their little tongues are flashing in and out.

hu

I would have liked to have seen how they managed to move to the opposite side. The nice thing is, is that the people who operate the camera are always watching. If one fell out they would carefully put her/him back in. I think Phoebe has learned to trust them.

Cheryl, I just got the biggest laugh of my day. I was watching Joplin and Heather in the nest right after I caught Phoebe feeding them. After resting quietly for awhile, Joplin started to make more room for himself. The reason being, he wanted to get his little claw out of the nest so he could scratch his head. I laughed out loud. It was the cutest thing I've seen in a long time!  They're just a miracle.

Good morning all ,these guys have such huge personalities for such tiny birds its amazing

Good morning Mary and Lynn. That's funny, Lynn... poor wee itchy critter. I watched them this morning and what a lot of squirming and ruffling... it's hard to tell which end is which at times.

In this pic I could actually see the liquid dropping from Mom's beak into Heather or Joplin. Yes, they are amazing, beautiful little creatures and I'm afraid we are going to see them leave the nest soon. I'm amazed at least one hasn't fallen out of the nest.

hum

hum

Look at all those little feathers... one of the chatters said although they look prickly they probably are very soft if we could feel them. I agree.

hum

hum

Hi Cheryl and Mary....hope you're having a good day. I've been watching the live stream of the babies and they are so cute! All that squirming, especially from Joplin (I'm assuming it's him 'cause he's a bit bigger than Heather) who seems to want more room for himself. He's scratching a lot and when his tiny claw scratched under his chin I thought he'd fall out of the nest, he had stretched his tiny body so far out. After he bites to get rid of some parasite, his little tongue comes out and it looks like he's chewing. I'm so amazed at these wee little creatures!!

I don't want to jinx this, but Chatter Box is the ONLY group I can post to. Any other group I try to post in, when I hit submit, the Care2 home page immediately comes up and my post disappears. So right now I relish coming in here and having my daily conversations with you all. Sending big hugs to everyone who comes in here.

Hi Lynn. I'm glad you've been getting a kick out of Joplin & Heather. I call the larger one Joplin, too. It may be the other way around but that keeps it easy for us. lol

Wow... what was I thinking when I suggested going to Zen's group to ask her why you can't post... obviously you can't do that! I will copy that part of your post that explains what's happening (and not happening) and take it to Zen. I'll watch for her to answer and bring back her comments. That must be really really really frustrating, Lynn.

I just peeked in at the "kids" and they were sleeping soundly in the sunshine. Look at the wee wing! Sooooooo cute! I shall return!

hum

Okay, Lynn, I've posted a message to Zen. Here's the link so you can see what I said. I hope we can find out what the problem is soon. (But I'm sure happy you can post HERE!)

I was just watching Joplin and Heather and they're getting too big for the nest!  They were sleeping when apparently a garbage truck came along (or some such type of noisy truck). Jopin (I think) opened his eyes wide and looked as if he was saying "What is all that noise? I'm trying to sleep, here!" Then the truck moved away, all was quiet, and Joplin closed that cute little eye (couldn't see the other eye) and went to sleep. I watched for another ten minutes or so and was about to sign off, when in swooped Phoebe in a loud buzz. Mama was here to feed the babies. It was so cute to watch.  She left in another buzz and the babies went back to sleep. That's when I tiptoed out of the room! lol

Have any of you ever seen the video of the rescued hummingbird by a young man who took such good care of it?

Here it is:

caIt's windy today and these two are blowing back and forth in their nest, which reminds me of that little smilie on the swing. WOW... it's not long before they will be leaving the nest! Those little eyes are open and they are probably watching Phoebe flying around.

Good to see you Lynn, Mary and Barbara! Lynn, I forgot to tell you how much I enjoyed that video. Isn't it amazing how GOOD humans can be (from those on the other side of the fence we read about every day). And this is such a gentle young... looks to be in his late teens. I don't even him but I am so proud of him and his parents who must have taught him to treat nature with the dignity and respect all living things deserve. He brought that wee teensy being up... he's the Dad of a featherbaby!

Yep, our little kids here are almost ready to leave the nest. In fact, I thought the wind was going to blow Joplin out of the nest a few minutes ago, too.

hum

hum

Cheryl, I'm so glad you enjoyed that video. It's so sweet that they go to sleep together. The little hummingbird trusts his "daddy" completely. What a wondrous thing.

Just watched the babies and the wind is fierce at times. Every time they close their eyes to get some sleep, the eyes pop open and then they're buffeted around by the wind and it looks as if one of them will fall out of the nest. They must have a good clawhold at the bottom of the nest. I sure hope so. They're soooo cute!

Have a good rest of this Sunday. Hugs to all who come in here!

http://sportsmansparadiseonline.com/Live_Hummingbird_Cam.html

Sorry I couldn't get here for a couple of days, guys. Things happen so fast with our birds, especially these little ones, that I feel I've missed important milestones when I can't get here. I hope all had a great weekend.

Lynn, it's really windy at the nest today too. I would think that might lift them right out of the nest when they are stretching! Yes... they must have a really good foothold! I was REALLY LUCKY to have Phoebe fly in while I was just there.

The babes are almost as big as she is!

they get to be as big as her quite quickly dont they ?Then she makes more shes a joy and a delight . have a great day/night guys

Hi Cheryl and Mary,

Boy, it is windy today for the wee ones. Although they're not so wee anymore! I was able to get a shot of one of them biting him/herself. The head is turned inward towards the body and with so little room to move they have to be a contortionist!!

img38.picoodle.com/i56s/mandysmom/2qgf_fe0_ucbyo.png

I was lucky enough, like you Cheryl, to see mom fly in to feed the little ones. So cute to see how eager they are to feed.

Talk to you later, guys. Big hugs!

http://sportsmansparadiseonline.com/Live_Hummingbird_Cam.html

Hi Mary and Lynn. Wow Lynn... those pics are super! You've really got the hang of it. Thank you!

It looks like we have a fledgling here! Joplin is sitting right on the edge of the nest now (Heather can spread out... ahhhh) but doesn't want to leave. A gust of wind made him flutter above the nest for a few seconds. It's just too good at home to leave yet. lol Look how bright-eyed little Heather looks while Joplin naps.

hum

hum

We sure have to enjoy them every minute we get now. I wonder if Phoebe will lay any more 'clutches' this year? I hope so.

Hope you both are having a good week so far.

Wow, Lynn - these are super pictures!! I have tried to get one where the little tongue is out but I haven't been fast enough. Good job!

I laughed a lot seeing those pics, and I just got these ones:

hum

hum

They are simply refusing to leave the nest, which looks so small now. Poor Phoebe. These kids need some counselling.

I was trying to find out some info. on the White Rock eagles as only the wide-angle cam is showing. It is the hardest forum to get into and I can't understand it. So frustrating. But I did find some info. on a little hummingbird in Victoria BC which would apply most likely to Phoebe (and Emma) as well. Phoebe may be starting another nest right now:

Tweet is an Anna’s Hummingbird. Nesting in a garden in Victoria BC.
Her nesting season is from December to August. During that time period will lay two eggs almost every six weeks. In fact, when one batch of chicks gets too large for her to sit on, she will make another nest and lay another two eggs and she sits on those while still feeding her near fledged chicks!

Laying the eggs
She lays two eggs, about a day and a half apart. This becomes obvious in the development of the chicks because one is always a bit ahead of the other, in hatching, feeding and even fledging. You get to realize just how vital a single day can be in the life of a hummingbird when you see how fast they develop.

The eggs
The eggs are about the size of coffee beans and have a soft papery shell. When the chick emerges, the shell collapses like a soft paper bag and becomes part of the nest floor. The chicks have no little point on their beak like other birds so they break through the eggshell by simply getting to big for it and splitting it like a sprout out of a seed.

We know that Phoebe has others nests in that garden. One person in the chatroom says that he thinks this is the last... but who knows!

Cheryl, that information is so interesting..and amazing. Those tiny little things develop so fast. I'm interested to see how long Heather and Joplin will stay in the nest. They have no room, they're barely sitting on the edge of the nest. One strong wind and poof, they'll be gone. I think!  lol Thanks for all the cool information and for the pictures.

to you Lynn for your great pics and your interest. I am so happy that you joined Mary and I in our excitement over all these great birds. But I know there's a very special place in our hearts for these amazing little hummers - Phoebe and Emma - raising their little babes. They grow so fast and it truly is miracuIous to watch. I was glad to find that info. because we just might find Phoebe or Emma about to start all over again! Wheeeeeee!!

I don't know this little one's name but she's sure pretty!

Rich, re: your question below I don't have the link to the hummingbird video on You Tube that you mentioned, but you might try You Tube on Google and do a You Tube search for "Hummingbird" For comparison of sizes - here are my favorite views - These are not of Phoebe's babies or nest.

Hi Mary and Lynn. I think they have a lot more colour when they're in the sun, Mary. But the pink glow is great too. The two are sitting in/on the nest much like yesterday.

I get the "news" from reading the chatters. They take some great screenshots also. The big news is that apparently Joplin has fledged but Heather hasn't. Joplin flew back to the nest to sit with her. Such a great brother and sister!

Oh, my they are so adorable to watch. I sat and watched as they sat together for quite some time. Then Joplin spread his wings and I knew he was about to take off. After that I caught him with his wings flapping so fast that you couldn't see them. Then he flew away, leaving his sister by herself. She sat there in the wind and at one time I thought she was going to fledge, but she hung on valiantly and scratched her little butt. I got two shots of her looking in different positions. Hope you like them, girls.   Big {{{{HUGS}}}}

OMgosh, Lynn, these are some of the best pictures yet!! They show so much activity. I just looked in and the nest is completely empty. (I've been watching the Casey Anthony trial today). Thank you so much for getting these screenshots. It may be... if they don't come back to the nest ... that you got the very last shots of our little hummers! SOOO CUTE!

Heather looks so alone in the pics without her big brother. She could probably see him somewhere close.

I feel bad that I didn't watch longer to see if Heather would fledge, but I'm glad that I was able to get the shots that I did. I guess that might be the last we see of them, so we have to wait and see if Phoebe has more eggs.   Good night, ladies.

Hi there Lynn and Mary. Good to get off the Casey Anthony news for a while and check in on the beautiful parts of life!

Yep, I think you have spotted her, Lynn. I looked in a couple of days ago and spotted one of them in that tree. It's very hard to see but I could see the movement and that's probably what you saw too. YIPPEE - could it be we get to watch new hummingbird life start again?! I found this picture and thought you'd like to see it.

hu

Every time I look at the little hummers the word "miracle" comes to my mind.

they look like little bees dont they ?hopefully we will get to watch them grow

Hi Mary and Cheryl, I just looked and can't see a thing except bushes. When I got the screen shot I had been looking at nothing unusual, and then what I think is Phoebe came flying in and landed on the branch. That's when I caught her.

The picture of the itty bitty ones in a the nest is just a miracle, as you say Cheryl. When you hear of all the terrible things going on with abuse of animals and people, and then look at something like this, it reaffirms your feelings of some good happening in the world. Thanks for posting it.

Hi Lynn and Cheryl i'l keep a lookout as well phoebe is so gorgeuos

Hi Mary and Lynn. I agree so much that when you look at these amazing tiny beings it washes away all the bad things going on in the world. We all need those moments because there is TOO MUCH scary and sad news. To be able to watch something on the other side is so refreshing. This group was originally meant for that reason - as some fun and amusement is needed to break briefly from all the sad and serious things we see and do in Care2. But that doesn't mean that we can't put the more serious issues on here as well.

PLEASE CHECK YOUR IN-MAIL AS I'VE SENT A MESSAGE TO YOU BOTH!

Oh lookey who's in the tree!! Just before I took this shot another one flew right up in front of the cam. These people are so very good to their hummers they don't want to go anywhere else. It must be lovely to sit in their beautiful yard and watch them.

Hi everybody, I took a screen shot of what I thought was Phoebe, but it can't be her because I looked at the same thing for over 5 minuted and it didn't move. Looks like a bird, but a hummingbird doesn't stay put that way for so long. I'll leave it up to you. Look right in the middle of the shot.  ????

It looks very much like the little one I saw (in the pic) which was just sitting there. Actually, they do just sit sometimes, well at least we saw her sit on the eggs! lol  But even then she was almost continually fluffing. I think it is one of the hummers!
