Be a good guardian May 17, 2009 1:39 AM

All the praying and fasting etc.. they are means to remind us to stay on the straight path so we can insh'Allah achieve aims of Shariah: protection of life, dignity etc. Thanks for this daily wisdom list as we need more reminders: today yet another report was launched by the UN warning us about the increasing disaster risk due to us being a neglectful guardian... with incresed risk of loss of life... My 2p. In peace, Rianne/ globalnomad

Prayer is an instrument through which novices find their path to God. Thus ablution symbolizes repentance; the Qibla*, a spiritual guide; standing in prayer becomes self-mortification; the recitation of the Qur’an, inner meditation; bowing the head, humility; prostration, self-knowledge; profession of faith, intimacy; and salutation becomes detachment from the world and bondage of stations.

*Qibla: The point toward which Muslims turn to pray, which is the Ka'ba, or house of God, in the Grand Mosque in Mecca.

I made peace with all the people in the world, resolving never to wage war on anyone, and I waged war against my self and have never since made peace with it.

Say: The bad and the good are not equal, though the abundance of the bad may please you; so be careful of (your duty to)Allah, O men of understanding, that you may be successful.

‘We have sent you an apostle who belongs to your own nation. He will recite our revelations and purify you of sin. He will explain to you the book which we have dictated to him; he will make you wise, teaching you things of which at present you know nothing. Remember me, and I shall remember you. Give thanks to me, and I shall never reject you.’

A true Muslim is the one who does not defame or abuse others; but the truly righteous becomes a refuge for humankind, their lives and their properties.

Do not treat people with contempt, nor walk insolently on the earth. Allah does not love the arrogant or the self-conceited boaster. Be modest in your bearing and subdue your voice, for the most unpleasant of voices is the braying of the ass.

Zahra,
These are extremely beautiful quotes. Thank you! It looks like I've missed out on the writing of some profound wise beings. We'll have to remedy that!

The earth and the sand are burning. Put your face on the burning sand and on the earth of the road, since all those who are wounded by love must have the imprint on their face, and the scar must be seen. Let the scar of the heart be seen, for by their scars are known the men who are in the way of love.
- Prophet Muhammed

Rabi'a asked someone to buy a blanket for her, giving the person four coins. The person asked: 'Do you want a black blanket, or a white one?' Rabi'a took back the coins, threw them in the Tigris river, and exclaimed: 'Must we divide even blankets into distinct groups?'

Charity for God's sake has a hundred signs within the heart--
the good deed, a hundred tokens.
Though in charity riches are consumed,
a hundred lives come to the heart in return.
A sowing of pure seeds in God's earth, and then no income! Impossible.

I struggled hard but did not reap the fruits of my labors. Then I gazed into myself and found that my ego and my heart were unified. When the ego and the heart are united, a portion of all that shines upon the heart is seized by the self. Thus I came to know the cause of my dilemma, that the light illuminating my heart was being seized by my ego.

A man went back to transgressing after he had sincerely asked forgiveness of God and swore never to sin again. "How will God forgive me this time?" he asked in despair.

A heavenly voice responded, "You obeyed Me and I made amends for you, then you abandoned Me and I indulged you, and now that you returned to Me I shall receive you."

A man lost his way in the desert, and wandered aimlessly for several days. He ran out of food, and thought he would die. Then he saw a bag lying in the sand. He opened it, and at first he thought it was filled with grains of barley. He was overjoyed. But when he tried to eat them, he discovered they were pearls—and he plunged into despair.

Seek a true friend,
for a friend seeks the benefit of a friend,
Do good to the people for the sake of God
or for the peace of your own soul
that you may always see what is pure
and save your heart from the darkness of hate.

Daily Muslim wisdom pt2 August 03, 2007 12:52 PM

Keep your promises; you are accountable for all you promise.

Do not follow advice which you do not understand. Make detailed inquiries with your eyes, ears and mind.

Do not strut about proudly. You cannot possess the earth, and you cannot rival the mountains in stature.

Avoid all evil; avoid all that is odious in the sight of the Lord.

-Qur'an, Al-Isra, Surah 17:34b-38
