 February 26, 2006 2:27 AM

Thanks.

My intention is for this to be much more than a group - this is the launch of a brand new international campaign. It will take us time, but ultimately I hope we will deliver a huge slice of awareness for all the individual weapon campaigns.

I want us to create a Hate-Weapon Charter. Specifically listing every type of hate weapon. I then want every government to sign up to that charter.

But, we are starting small - any help/suggestions you can give regarding the look and feel of the group - our wording and phrases etc. please comment.

I'm here! February 26, 2006 8:15 AM

Thanks for the invite.

1st off the term hate weapons.

If we aim to win over others who are not informed, can this be possible by using terms that polarize?

The military uses dispassionate terms such as "colatteral damage". That's code for "oops"!

What I suggest is that instead of using terms that will propel others into emotional debate, we instead use a glossary of terms that is used by those who leave these weapons behind, and redefine them in more understandable language.

Depleted Uranium: No Child left behind.

I don't believe that these weapons are left behind by people that hate. They are instead inconsiderate and uncompassionate. We should show them for what they are, and how that impacts the lives of those who must stay there after the conflict has passed through.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the feedback John. I generally agree with what you say.

I'm very keen to have a simple self explanitory collective term for weapons of this ilk. Hate weapons is punchy and new, which is going to be a particular aspect of our message - we will be inventing our own terminology. So.... Feel free to suggest alternatives, Hate Weapons is a place holder and as soon as we come up with something suitable it can be replaced or may used for some particular examples such as those cluster bombs designed to look like childrens toys, which, I would suggest are used by people who hate.  [ send green star]

Welcome aboard Agnes.

As I see it, right now we are an "upstart" group. We can therefore afford to be controversial which is why I like the term "Hate-Weapons" - it should stimulate debate.

My premise is that these are weapons whose design lends them to being used, even inadvertently in a hateful way.

I realise that this may cause some people to pull back from supporting us, but I reckon later in the game we will have developed a more subtle form of terminology.

So long as we remember that it is the weapons, not the people that we are against and wish to see banned. Of course, any campaign of this nature is going to attract some pretty nasty enemies, we must accept that and refuse to allow them to distract us.

Before I start recruitment, I think its important that we have some content that illustrates what we mean and for that I would like to ask for your help - Could I ask for you early joiners to scan the web for news stories that illustrate our point.

This is all going to get very political I'm sure, and I'm keen for it not to be an opportunity to bash particular targets. I reckon every nation in the world uses these weapons and we need to remind them of the impact.

For example, most nuclear weapons are designed to take out huge civilian targets, we only have to look at Hiroshima and Nagasaki as examples of that. For chemical weapons I think about the way Sadam poisoned the kurds in order to solve a troublesome civilian problem. We all know the problems with land mines and cluster bombs - especially those designed to look like childrens toys.

Maybe we can track down some recent news stories to illustrate these issues?

A also welcome full debate with people committed to ridding this world of this sort of weapon - thats you guys! This is new ground for me, I have a strategy that will take us beyond first base but there's loads I'm sure I've not thought of.

Hello everybody!

Thanks for inviting me, George!

I agree with John that the term "hate weapons" may be misleading, however, I can well understand your idea behind it, George.

Those weapons are left behind out of negligence or devil-may-care attitude. Perhaps we should call these things "Weapons of Mass Indifference" or the like...

I hope, I can add my little share of voice and effort into fighting these nasty things!

Great group!

Cheers,
Andy

I like the term "Hate Weapons". It is punchy and to-the-point.

There is NO WAY we are going to avoid controversy. Especially from the "U.S. cannot possibly do any wrong" crowd. {Or the UK, or any other country -- but they are especially vocal in the U.S.  Hmmmmmm, wonder why? Is anyone behind that?}

I suppose in Orwellian newspeak, that crowd is going to call them "Love Weapons". Intended to do good. They are Love Weapons, they don't hurt anyone, and, besides, the U.S. doesn't use them anyway, so why the fuss!

Thank you for inviting me, George.

Should be a different title for the group than "Aftermath", tho. I thot it was a punning title having something to do with mathematics!!!

That will take some thinking about. I think the name is misleading -- after what? "After" something -- that's good -- too late at night to think about that now.

This is a needed group and concept.

Thanks Barbara, this is why you have been invited at this early stage - all is open for discussion - it is important that when we launch our campaign proper that we have a clear vision that has a very speicific outcome in mind - we have all seen campaigns deteriorate to nothing because they got side-tracked distracted by irrelevence.

We are still open for alternative group name suggestions - I've not set up the website yet and therefore little is set in concrete.

How about "AFTERMATH OF GRIEF".

Think of it as a film or book title.

It is to-the-point, and alliterative, with "f's".

And, it can't be confused with anything else!

Great subject March 11, 2006 10:48 AM

Congratulations George on the creation of this group. It was certainly needed.

All war weapons are evil, but “Hate Weapons” mentioned in this group (Land mines, DU residues, etc.) are particularly heinous because:

a) They mainly harm innocent civilians of all genders and ages.

b) The dastardly effect of these weapons lasts for years, decades and in the case of DU for centuries.

c) Hate Weapons (as currently called here) being mostly hidden or unknown, make it very difficult for people to protect themselves from them.

Thus yes, this group does have a worthwhile mission. In my opinion a two pronged one:

1)To definitely ban worldwide, once and for all, the totality of Hate Weapons.
2)To expose and bring to justice the criminals who use them.

**********

Note: I like Barbara's proposed title for this group "AFTERMATH OF GRIEF”. It's short, descriptive and catchy.

Unfortunately, I have great difficulty in pronouncing Afermath of Grief when I'm tipsy!

However, I also agree that Aftermath may be wrong too.

Welcome to the group Carlos, I welcome your passion, I hope you will remind us of it time and time again.

Lets get our thinking caps on for a new name. This is the worst decision to make for a group, so I'm going to set a deadline. We must decide on a new name a week today or else we plump for Aftermath.

The last time I went through this process, we ended up choosing the name TimeWatch; This is a heritage campaign and it turned out that the BBC was running a history series called Timewatch! I'm very fortunate the BBC support the TimeWatch campaign otherwise they would sue me.

Hi Carlos,

I do not think that we should seek to bring those that use them to court. My reasoning is that this brings in a whole different can of worms that we do not need to address at this time.

Let's focus on the single issue of getting them banned and lets make it as easy as possible for countries to sign up to it.

This is why we need to spread the mesh of hate weapons wide and that is also why we should not look for justice. Some weapons in our list will definately be completely abhorent but others right now may be generally acceptable. Like all good campaigns, this one seeks to change a global mindset.

Right now, we have a number of campaigns aiming to ban individual weapons.

The effect of this is that only specific weapons are banned.

What I want to do is create a list wherebye all weapons, except those a country opts out of, are banned.

Although this approach may seem like a bit of a soft one - allowing couties only to sign ut to certain bits of the agreement, I think it would emphasise the bits they had not agreed to and give us something to focus on for each country.

 March 14, 2006 11:25 PM

I would like to express the idea of Costa Rica as an example here. How many countries in the world don't have the official army and all hierarchical and political structures pertained to it. All modern weapons have been dreamed/intended/designed by men, companies leaded by men, used armies leaded by men (if you know exceptional women in this matter it is of curiosity). If one think honestly the idea and existence of Costa Rica without army without all hate weapons named here we know it is a realistic possibility for all other countries to obtain, to take steps towards that direction. Thus i would like to suggest name for this group After Army, abbreviation come close to AA-movement but, aren't guns about addiction too that men suffer...    [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Welcome aboard folks.

We are still very much in startup mode at the moment. Doing initial research and working out what it is exactly that we are trying to ban!

The basic idea is to have a long term strategy aimed at getting an international convention on the banning of what we are calling for the moment "hate-weapons".

This treaty would be an umbrella agreement that allowed countries to buy into it and be selective about which elements that ratified.

Whilst I can see that this approach could be labelled as "letting countries off lightly", I think it has the following advantanges:

1. By including a wide range of weapons, we should be able to combine the focus of what is currently a disparate set of campaign groups. This should allow the issue to be pushed up the agenda.

2. Once a country signs up to the convention, it will be clear what weapons they currently condone by the failure to ratify that section.

3. This should allow us to create and evolve a long term strategy against hate-weapons, which come in many guises and many are yet to be invented - by creating a broad understanding of what we consider to be hate weapons, there is potential for society to avoid their development. The surrent situation is that we wait until the ill effects are demonstrated before trying to ban that specific type of weapon.

I reckon it is going to take upwards of ten years to make this thing fly, so don't expect any miracles. But in the mean time, we have a group that can focus on a range of campaigns related to hate-weapons.

We should look for specific causes that we can use our group to make a difference with as initial training before we launch our own "Hate-Weapon Manifesto".

Aftermath is an english word that means "as a result of" and is very often applied in a negative context in situations where large scale devastation has occured. For example, "the aftermath of the storm resulted in thousands of homeless people". it is also used a lot when describing the negative effects of wars.

Good to see Jouni here, he is so knowledgeable about these things, and Paola, and you others, glad to meet you. Hope I can come back soon, and will check in as much as I possibly can, good name, I think "Hate Weapons" for that is what they are!! george, i agree with the term 'hate weapons'. how else can you describe them?? the reason there's so much profit to be made from these weapons is that we ,the taxpayer, pay for the research + development of them, then private companies get the contracts to build them + sell them off worldwide. no financial risk, just lots of profits from maiming + killing. can anyone remember new labours election promise of an 'ethical foreign policy' back in 1997??!!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

 March 29, 2006 6:12 AM

Hi George! Thanks so much for the invite. I am glad to be here. Here's how I feel about all types of today's weapons-de-jour:

I feel that all forms of hate-weapons, cluster bombs, landmines, depleted uranium, WMD's, MOAB's, etc, should be unilaterally dismantled and disposed of-FOREVER. As long as this world and all its peoples remain in a 'war mentality' we are little more than children playing with matches and the parents are not watching. That is scary. Until we stop production, dismantle what we now have and discard any future plans to create any hate-weapons, there can be no hope for the future. All nations must stop creating weapons of death and destruction or we will have no world left that is not contaminated and unlivable. Humanity must rise above itself or be doomed. I hope we can rise above ourselves.

George, I like the term 'hate-weapons'. I think it almost sums up what weapons are--instruments of hate. But I will take it one step further and maybe you and others will agree or disagree with me, but, I feel they are also greed-weapons. Think about it. Why do nations go to war in the first place? Greed. One has what the other one wants. If one nation cannot get whatever it is that it wants and 'talking/negotiating' fails--they go to war. If one nation cannot buy the other nation's commodity--or steal it through 'treaties'--they go to war. If one nation doesn't like the people's of another nation--they go to war. If one nation doesn't like or agree with another nation's religion or politics--they go to war. GREED AND HATE. It is the fodder on which little men with little minds and little character feed.

It is these men that hate and lust for their neighbor's 'gold'. They infect others. That is also the sickness we must root out and 'vaccinate' against. Their hate is what creates the weapons. They have no love for their fellow man. So, their weapons are a 'gift' that keeps on giving long after their wars are over--because they do not care.

Just my rambling 2/100ths of a dollar.

T

I'm so in April 03, 2006 3:03 AM

Thank you for inviting me. My attitude toward this topic goes beyond social activism, to being very personal. A man I came to love was destroyed by an anti tank mine while serving in Iraq last year (I met him after his return...a maimed and broken man...working towards recovery). I had never known a soldier, never met someone and heard the stories, only read them or heard people talk about how horrible soldiers were and how bad war was...though it was some distant thing to me and I questioned people who protested because I wondered if they really had any first-hand knowledge...well, in my limited way I now do and my emotions toward this subject are very strong.

Below are a few thoughts to share by way of introduction (written some time after the two of us decided to break up because his emotional stability was at stake and after I learned that he'd become suicidal and was hospitalized because of the effects of PTSD and living in a completely different body than he'd had a couple years before):
---------------------------
Our love was stolen. Stolen by the poison that is Evil in the world.
I pray to God it does not ruin you, but it has burned you, scarred you and made you impotent.
I don't know how I will go on in life.
I am an empty fool--to be pitied if one wanted...and yet, I cannot wallow in the pit I wish to sink into. No, I must perform my duty and serve the life before me by earning what little I can for food and drink and shelter.
I am lost without you.
I am empty music with no instrument to play.
I am a beggar with no eyes to see where best to sit and pray that one would offer generosity.
I am full of lice and my skin is all filth and cracked.
I have no beauty with none to behold it.
I am bitterness and sorrow. I am all the lovely things that have died and withered and my Spring will never come.
One day I will join the flowers in their grave and the cold, hard earth will surround my flesh and consume me.
Oh may my soul rise to heaven and there greet you who have gone before me.
Together we will embrace and see the truest beauty that ever was intended for all mankind when the Lord said, "It was good".
Oh God, give me strength to live, to stand, to breath without my love.
His words lifted me, his eyes beheld me, his hands caressed my heart and now that he is gone I am forever a widow.
------------------------
Admittedly, these words are dark, and there is good news, he is getting help and doing better. I guess I just wanted to let you know this is a passionate field of interest as I hate the evil of warfare, and too have mixed feelings about how soldiers are treated on their return (alas, most likely a whole nother group

the name... April 03, 2006 3:16 AM

Just a thought as we all toss out ideas of how to name the group/effort. Aftermath of Grief is good, as it expresses what we're trying to avoid, Hate-Weapons is provocative, as is our topic...and I wonder what you might think of something that says something about the future, like "Consider our Children" or something like that...since one of the main thrusts is how innocents are destroyed by one group's machismo and defense plan and ironically, the people who use these devices likely care most about the ones they wind up destroying.
(I'm not denying that many are self-centered and don't care about others, but most who are fighting for a cause are also thinking of their families and the future their children will have...this may be a powerful angle that should be considered in the name)

Just a thought!

I'm kind of settled on Aftermath of War for now, with a campaign image (not done yet) of a child holding a cluster bomb.

Ultimately, there are quite a large number of issues that will need to be aired regarding this campaign so all ideas are welcome but also we need to be careful not to cloud the message by trying to incorporate all of them in a single message.

Better to end up with several distinct messages that can be focussed towards specific target audiences. eg.

The impact on children
The impact on the environment
The impact on our soldiers
The impact on our morality etc.

Thanks for the invite! I'm always glad for the knowledge that there are more that believe that war is an atrocity, and the fact that when it's over, the effects linger on... Almost makes one think that human kind is naturally destructive.

Power on! United we stand! NO MORE WAR!

Thanks for the invite April 25, 2006 2:01 AM

Weapons itself means some sort of hatred. Senseless insensitive hazardous left behinds could be one more term.

Looking forward to awareness campaigns or activities.

The world should be cleared of all such things.

Good to be in this group.

Hi Everyone May 12, 2006 12:22 PM

Thank you for the Invitation George.  I can see that this group is energetic enough to get this started for this important mission.  It will take a lot of work.  One of my greatest horror thoughts, are those of all the innocent children and people struck by the thousands of land mines left behind, long after the fighting has stopped.  It's such a tragedy.

I like the name Aftermath of war, or something like Implications of War.  And Hate weapons definately says what they are.    I look forward to helping and speaking out on this behalf.

PS May 12, 2006 12:24 PM

Maybe we can wet up a click to donate site, for banning and ridding of these weapons, much in the same way as we click to donate to save the animals, and others here on care 2?  Any thoughts on this?  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Thanks for the invitation, George.  I  despise war itself and believe that as humans we surely can find a better way od resolving our differences.  I also despise the manufacture and use of the weapons you aptly call "hate weapons" - weapons that continue to inflict pain, suffering and death long after the war has ended. I am with you all the way  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hello! June 19, 2006 2:39 AM

Thank you for the invitation to join George.I hadn't thought about it until I read about the group, that there isnt a well supported 'group' except perhaps the Red cross, that actually receives media coverage or is in the 'public arena, re weapons of hate( not sure about that name but people have made some excellent points...pondering on that lol) What a wonderful idea you've got going on Care 2.I've just heard from a wonderful lady (from Women for Peace in the UK)who has just returned from helping the Palestinians with their olive crops and it broke my heart. The'weapons of hate' and the equipment used to bulldoze the homes should all come under the same 'umbrella' in my eyes.Caterpillar equipment is used in this case and I do not buy any 'brand names'  that support this activity.Anyway that is slightly off the subject...Thank you and i will pop in to keep abreast of group activity and shareany info I fel relevant. With love ..Namaste

Hello. I just came across this site today after seeing it on a Dutchman's profile. My father spent 4 years in concentration camps, which affected the way I was brought up, and so I was interested to see what "Aftermath of War" was about. I see it encompasses much more than the emotional aftermath.

Leaving hate weapons behind to terrorize the country's already traumatized people is inhumane cruelty. I can't imagine living with that kind of fear, wondering if my children's lives are endangered every time they play outside, even many years after the war.

I am learning more about this horrendous situation as I read through the threads, and am interested in finding out what we can do to create this much needed change in a money hungry world.

You are not alone.

What happens out there is up to the people out there... all 6 billion of them.

Our strength grows from the thoughts building, here, in the peace and silence of our internal tranquility.

Once the words are form there is hope to help others form the thoughts we have found in our PEACE.
