During the month of February 2005, Flea World featured a circus act that included a solitary elephant named "Dondi" (pictured at right in a promotional photo). Dondi is an Asian elephant who was violently captured in the wild in 1974 and brought to this country to perform. Dondi is also forced to give rides at Flea World. She was kept in a small trailer when not performing.
These acts are not only abusive to the animals, but they also pose clear and serious threats to public health and safety. Since 1990, there have been numerous dangerous incidents involving big cats and captive elephants in the United States, resulting in 12 human deaths and more than 100 human injuries.
Recent acts at Flea World have included a comedy act, acrobats and magicians. At Flea World there is also an amusement park featuring bumper cars, miniature golf, kiddie rides and a game arcade. Clearly, Flea World can still provide quality entertainment to its patrons without exploiting animals.
How Can I Help? Please contact Sydney and Marianne Levy, the owners of Flea World, and ask them not to feature exotic animal acts in the future at Flea World.

Fewer than half of the cats seized from the Tiger Ranch animal shelter survived their illnesses, but the survivors should be ready soon for adoption, according to the organization caring for them.
More than 240 cats from the Frazer no-kill shelter are living in a Clarion County facility while the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals waits for their legal transfer.
Lin Marie, the owner of defunct animal sanctuary, pleaded guilty last week to 12 animal cruelty charges, which spared her almost 600 animal cruelty and other charges. Marie also was known as Linda Bruno.
During a March 2008 raid on the Tiger Ranch on Miller Drive, officials found 55 dead cats on the property, 12 others that had to be euthanized and hundreds of animal bones. They took more than 600 cats after the raid.
PSPCA spokeswoman Gail Luciani said the organization is waiting for paperwork to legally claim the cats before launching a Web site advertising the cats for adoption.
"We fully intend to find homes for these cats," she said. "We're hoping for the paperwork early this week."
Matt Collins, one of Marie's attorneys, said the paperwork in question was a forfeiture order from the district attorney. It won't involve any action by Marie.
"Rarely will a defendant 'help' with a forfeiture order," he said. "The PSPCA is basically waiting for a 'title transfer.'"
An SPCA spokesperson confirmed that cat owners who can prove they own a particular cat from Tiger Ranch may make their claims by Wednesday to get the cats. Proof of ownership would include a photo, veterinary bill or vaccination records.
