More of a Question June 29, 2006 10:51 AM

This is not so much an idea or a suggestion, but more of a question.  Does is carry much weight in writing or faxing, to a city, state or country that is not yours?  Or should you concentrate on your own state?

Since this is all new to me, I was just curious.

Thanks.

That is an excellent question!

In my opinion, writing to anyone is important, even if it is a different country, state, etc.  What this does is show that person that the world is watching what they do.  So, when writing about cruelty cases, I think it is just fine to write to anyone, anywhere.  Although, the judge may regard letters from the local area with more weight, it is still good to get your opinion in there too.  As for legislation, I still think it is a good idea to write but generally, they don't care about your opinion unless you are in certain zip codes, i.e. are you a voter that can vote him/her out.  That is really all they care about.  So, I still say write about whatever you want and to whom ever you want.  It is better to write and be ignored than feel strongly and not write at all.

Also, just in case you have a question about the method of communication I will answer that here too.

I think calling is the best.  More than likely, you will not be able to talk to the judge, legislator, attorney, etc.  You will be given their voicemail.  This is still effective, they just tally you in on pro or con for an issue.  Letter writing (snail mail) is the second best, if not a tie for first.  This is simply due to the fact that you can ask for a reply.  It is kind of hard to ask for a reply in a phone message.  Faxing is a good way also.  I have never personally faxed a letter but I believe this is a quick way to let them know what you think.  Email.  This is by far the least effective and least likely to be read.  Many times, if you send an email through a website that has a system set up where you write the email on their page and they send it for you...it goes to thier junk mail because it is "bulk" mail essentially because the inbox can't handle it or thier email system is set up to ignore so many emails from a certain address, i.e. @hsus.org.  So, if you must email them, do it directly from your own email account.  Even if you cut and paste an email from another site like I was talking about above, it is much better than doing nothing.  Also, your email, most likely, will be read.

I hope that answered your question.

Welcome to the group!
