PetSmart's bully breed banning. 7:21 AM
In case you weren't aware of this breed discrimination by petsmart, I thought I'd notify you. They refuse to let 'bully breeds' attend their doggie day camps. I didn't know this until just yesterday. Here's a link to their doggie day care site.

http://www.petsmart.com/doggiedaycamp/index.shtml

I've started a petition here:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/911904877#top

This isn't about their camp. This is about them causing ignorant people that believe myths and stereotypes about these dogs to be reinforced and even more widely believed. LET'S DO SOMETHING PEOPLE! THIS ISN'T FAIR!!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Thank Pennsylvania Governor for cracking down on puppy mills June 18, 2006 8:33 AM

  • Signatures: 34,198
  • Goal: 50,000
  • Deadline: Ongoing...
Puppy mills are large-scale commercial dog breeding operations where profit is given a higher priority than the well-being of dogs.

The health of the dogs is disregarded in order to maintain a low overhead and maximize profit. The female dogs are housed in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions often times without adequate food, water, veterinary care or socialization. They are caged their entire lives and bred at every opportunity until they are no longer physically able to reproduce. After the dogs are no longer profitable they are commonly killed or abandoned.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture and some states license and inspect puppy mills, but the puppy mills often get around licensing requirements by selling directly to consumers and some simply rely on the limited reach of the law.

Recently, Pennsylvania’s Governor Edward G. Rendell dismissed members of the Pennsylvania Law Advisory Board in an initial step toward cracking down on inhumane conditions in the state’s puppy mills.

Pennsylvania is often referred to as the puppy mill capital of the east with Lancaster County having the highest concentration of puppy mills of any county in the country.

Governor Rendell made an important step in transforming this industry that deserves to be recognized. Please join the ASPCA in sending a message of support to Governor Rendell to let him know that his efforts are not going unnoticed! Perhaps with our encouragement, other leaders will follow in his footsteps.

Japan's bears need your help. June 18, 2006 8:35 AM

Right now, approximately 800 bears are suffering in Japanese bear parks.

In Japan's eight bear parks, bears are confined to crude concrete pits where they are forced to beg for, or fight over, scraps of food thrown by tourists. Left for years to suffer in the name of entertainment, it is hard to imagine a more bleak existence for these animals.

The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) has been urging authorities in Japan to clamp down on the parks for five years. One bear park has closed down and two others have confirmed that they have plans for alternative enclosures. We need to ensure that the parks follow through with their plans in order to improve the lives of these captive bears. We are asking the parks to construct forested enclosures to replicate the bears natural habitat, to prevent unsupervised public feeding and to stop degrading circus shows.

Japan's bears need your help. Sign this petition to the bear parks owners to respectfully ask that Japan end animal cruelty at its bear parks!

Justice for Kittens stomped, chopped in half, frozen June 18, 2006 8:39 AM

  • Signatures: 1,735
  • Goal: 2,500
  • Deadline: 7-11-2006

Justice for Kittens stomped, chopped in half, frozen.

When Eastlake, Ohio police arrived at a burglary scene on May 30,
they were stunned to find tortured, mutilated kittens inside the home.
Two kittens inside lay dead - one soaked with water and left in a
freezer, another crushed and cut in two, its pieces found in separate
rooms.

Three others, who all survived, had been thrown against a wall.

William Whitlow, 22, of Concord Township, is accused of breaking
into the home that night, stealing jewelry and cash. Sitting around a
fire in the back yard, Whitlow reportedly drank beer with friends
before entering the rear of the home because he wanted water to put out
the fire.

It was at that point Whitlow began throwing the five kittens against a wall.

According to reports, when Whitlow's friends asked him to stop, he soaked one in a pot and put it in the freezer then stomped another with
his foot. He used a kitchen knife to cut the crushed kitten in two,

according to officials. Whitlow told police he was intoxicated and
"doesn't really know what he did."

New Petition to End Internet Canned Hunting June 20, 2006 5:52 PM

Protect Big Cats: End Internet Canned Hunts
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/422394638

The Internet has emerged as a new vehicle for hunters to remotely kill wild animals with little more than the click of a mouse.

In canned hunts involving big cats -- bobcats, lions, and tigers are often sold to fenced-in hunting farms where hunters pay big money to brutally kill them. But now, a new technology has emerged where over the Internet, a person can point, click, and shoot these beautiful animals via mounted rifle cameras, without ever leaving the comfort of their computer.

Thankfully, legislation has been proposed in the House to formally outlaw this horrifying new trend in canned hunting. Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA) has introduced the Computer-Assisted Remote Hunting Act (H.R. 1558) which prohibits computer-assisted hunting in which the "hunter" remotely aims and fires a weapon to kill an animal.

Help end this shockingly inhumane method of killing big cats. Urge your U.S. Representative to support an end to Internet hunting.

anonymous Stop All Wildlife Trade Now !!!!! April 02, 2008 10:23 AM

Fighting the Illegal Wildlife Trade in the Skies

Dear Tammy,

Did you know that while you're traveling between countries, endangered species could be sharing your flight - in violation of international law? In fact, on March 14th a traveler was arrested in Bangkok's international airport trying to smuggle 20 baby slow lorises, 30 monitor lizards, and 25 flyriver turtles - all protected species!

The illegal international trade in wildlife is a multi-billion dollar industry driving many species to the brink of extinction, as animals and wildlife products are smuggled to supply an illegal market in exotic pets and luxury goods made of endangered species.

Urge the aviation industry to crack down on wildlife crime in the skies by joining our petition to this year's Aviation and Environment Summit.

On April 22-23, 2008, world leaders in the aviation industry will meet in Geneva at the Aviation and Environment Summit to discuss the steps the industry can take to minimize its environmental impact. Please sign this petition, as we will forward it to the summit and urge them to consider their role in combating the illegal trade in wildlife and protecting animals in the wild.

Encourage airlines and airports to be more vigilant when inspecting and transporting luggage, to make a concerted effort to stop the illegal transport of endangered species and illegal wildlife products, and to work with law enforcement authorities to bring wildlife traffickers to justice.

Help us prevent poachers and smugglers from profiting as Malayan sun bears, slow lorises, rare birds, reptiles, and other species are trafficked from country to country.

Thank you in advance for taking action and spreading the word. This is a critical message to the aviation industry to help protect wildlife from being illegally traded and transported around the world.

Sincerely,

Michael Zwirn
Director of U.S. Operations

Dear Monsieur Rochat:

As a leader in the global aviation industry, I am requesting your help in combating the international illegal trade in wildlife and wildlife products.

The illegal trade in wildlife not only affects individual species but entire ecosystems. According to the U.S. Congress, this multi-billion dollar illegal trade is also tied to organized crime, drug smuggling, gun running, and even armed separatist movements and insurgencies. The implications for global health are dire as well. The illegal wildlife trade can spread diseases like bird flu, SARS, and other contagions, affecting not only humans but livestock, wildlife populations and even the world economy.

The aviation industry leadership can play a critical role. I urge you and the leadership in your industry - at airlines, airports, and freight carriers - to include this issue as part of the agenda at the Aviation and Environment Summit in Geneva.

I encourage you to work with the world's airlines and airports to be more vigilant when inspecting and transporting luggage, to make a concerted effort to stop the illegal transport of endangered species and illegal wildlife products, and to work with law enf
