                       A Big Texas

I started this group for several reasons.

1) As a way to share with all my non-Texan friends the beauty, unique history, and people of my homeland. I say homeland, because we tend to view ourselves Texans first, Americans second--at least those of us natives.

2) For a place to provide specfic political, educational, news and events to other Texans. Our state has a large population of transplanted texans and many do not realize all the rich hertiage festivals, beautiful state/national parks, or "Best of Texas" places to visit. Our state has a lot going on politically also. While right now we may be a red state, but many of us are working hard to get back to our "blue" roots. We have important laws, resources, and oppertunities many due not know about.
links to area newspapers, texas statues, and resources will be posted here. as will as a guide to entertainment.

Please everyone keep in mind that whatever I post is my opinion and does not reflect the opinions of all of Texas.

Republicans are welcome, but realize I am not one of you. I would request you post how long you have lived in Texas, are you a transplant or multi-generational? Simply my own curosity.

I encourage open, adult discussions and will not delete any post UNLESS there is name calling, hatefully remarks, and/or any post related to any hate group.

Everyone keep in mind, regardless of point of view, if you do not agree with someone and can not keep discussion at an adult level--agreeing to disagree--just by pass that thread.

3) To provide people interested in visiting or moving here valuable information on best spots, must sees, as well as avoid this one...

4) Just because I wanted to. I am a 4th generation born Texan from both sides of family. My great-great maternal grandmother was a native west texas comanche. My roots are deep and strong here. I was raised with a deep respect and love for my 'homeland'. My paternal grandfather was one of those (and there are still some who agree) that believed we should exercise our right to return to the independant nation be began as. He, as most of my family, were not fans of the federal government(to put it politely).

My hope is that

members living here will add events, neat unknown facts, stories, discuss state issues/remedies, out the way places to visit, even geneology.

people living other places will learn of the rich history and hertiage of our state.
the beauty of the land and diversity of its peoples.

come to know the REAL Texas, not the brocheres, unrealistic t.v. shows, or jokes.

Yes we are a proud people and many other states have thought of us as braggards, got rich quick off oil show offs, even backwoods-ignorant country folk.

Worse is being associated with the Bush family---none born here, only reside here parts of the year for political and financial reasons (legal residency needs), and the girls go to UT Austin.

Our state up until the 1990's was primarly a blue state, slowly the democratics have losed ground to the republicans. Also, during that time we saw a great influx of transplants (people moving to Texas to take advantage of our resources, economy, and low wages) a few fell in love and now sport bumper stickers saying things along the lines of "Texan by choice". Others do nothing but complain about our state and people but remain; thriving off our resources. Many of us think of them as nothing better then the carpetbeggers of the reconstruction.
It is they who have influenced our politics the most.

Hi Ann and thanks for the invite!

I've always wanted to visit Texas and hope to do so within the next few years.

First thing I'd like to do is eat one of those big, fat Texas steaks I've heard so much about. My apologies to the vegetarians.

welcome greet and kristi

but kristi you need to read my comments. gwb was not born here, not schooled here, daddy came to midland to start oil business, texas to them has only been a "vacation" house place, and only stay long enough for residency requirements for politics.
connecticut is "home".
UT Austin even had the good sense to deny admission to him.
girls only there cause austin a cool party town school.

now look kirsti you have me ranting and raving already.

gwb in NOT a Texan, he and daddy are carpetbeggers here.

now look what you have done to my beautiful site--putting that thing up.

but you know i love ya anyway kristi

Sunshine thank you for the invite to the group. I have been living in Texas for the past three years, going on four soon. I now consider myself a Texan by state and "state of mind"...lol

What a great idea for a group and topics. I am sure this is where I can get more of the Texas history here with all your information to share.  I am looking forward to learning more of the Lone Star state and its people.

For the invite.. But what would a texan site be without someone from Tn.

Not that we are to humble, but with out us Volunteers Texas would still be part of Mexico..LOL

Come to think about it with Bush running the show in D.C. that is starting to sound better and better.

Welcome Mike P
your so very right, without the Tennesee volunteers we wouldn't have a Texas group. we love you Tennesee!!!!!!

but once again lets remember bushddd  is NOT a texan. not born here, did not attend school here, private schools back east then college too. (UT denied admission), daddy only came here as a carpet begger to make money off our oil, would only stay enough months out of year to maintain residency for financial and political reasons. conneticut is his true home-
you and kristi need to get together and exchange notes. lol

ya'll sure know how to get a texas gal riled up

Hi! April 24, 2006 5:52 AM

My name is Jo Ann, and I was born and raised (and still live) in Mississippi, but did live in near Athens,TX. back in 96-97' (lived  on a Racing Q.H.farm) during that time.  I loved the State, the Cowboys(of course!-LOL),the horses;the food, etc., and hope to one day be able to go back.   (I haven't made it to Amarillo yet, but one day I'll get there!)      Loved living just 20 minutes from Canton (the home of the Biggest Flea Market you've ever attended.  Hundreds of acres of "STUFF"!! LOL)   Well worth the price of admission!

Had an old cowboy tell me shortly before I left- that "Once you've been to Texas, you always come back!"  Well I hope its true! I'd love to go back!

[ send green star]  [ accepted]

 April 24, 2006 6:27 AM

"Once you've been to Texas, you always come back!"
is true for many folks thats why you see so many "wasn't born in Texas but got here as quick as I could" bumper stickers.

and welcome to our group Joann, maybe we can be your little part of Texas while you are away.
in all my 50 yrs here i have never been to amarillo either, in fact none of panhandle, even when traveling out of state. but i do know athens and that part of east texas well. very pretty country around there, piney woods, lakes, small towns. hope you got a chance to get down to Davey Crockett Park while there.
so very glad to have you here with us.
just sub welcome for humba

Hi again! April 24, 2006 6:34 AM

I loved the Athens area. (Actually lived about 8miles north of Athens -off of CR 2394).   I spent all the time I could just rambling around the area (Plus I had to go to P.T. in Tyler), so I wandered alot! HA HA!!

Would go to Mabank once a week to pick up feed from the feed mill there , then to Eustice for weekly rodeos, you name it I tried to wander around and find it!  LOL

My big thing about Amarillo is of course to go visit the A.Q.H.A.(Am.Quarter Horse Ass'n).  I did make it to the Paint Horse  Headquarters in Ft.Worth and the Will Rogers Center (super place).  Loved Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie too( we had a horse running at Retama Park in S.Texas, and went to Lone Star to watch her run on TV- She won by the way!!)  And let's not forget- Billy Bob's & the Stockyards in Ft.Worth-!!   See I may be from Mississippi, I'm a Texan at heart!! LOL LOL LOL!!

There is so much to do in Texas you never run out of places to go and people to see.  SIGH!! I sure miss it!!!!

Just wanted to pop in and say Hello.  Born and raised in the Dallas area.  Left for a little bit and couldn't stand it so came back and brought my daughter with me.  She may not have been born here but I got her here as quick as I could.

Ann that's a good idea...but I would keep it to Fort Worth...maybe Kim could do Dallas or someone else more familiar with that area.

And it's hard to beat Angelo's Barbecue at 2533 White Settlement Road, Fort Worth.  It's something of a legend...President Johnson would have it catered for the White House.

I came across this group and decided to join. I lived in Seguin for 12 years and my son was born there. I had my reasons for moving back to Florida and they were good ones. There are things I miss about out there though, like a Saturday night at Greune Hall. It just gets in your blood.  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]
