Yet even within Israel itself, accusations persist that the web of controls affecting every aspect of Palestinian life bears a disturbing resemblance to apartheid. After four years reporting from Jerusalem and more than a decade from Johannesburg before that, the Guardian's award-winning Middle East correspondent Chris McGreal is exceptionally well placed to assess this explosive comparison. Here we publish the first part of his two-day special report
The article sums it up: Apartheid is alive and well in Israel, sadly. I am a South African and I have personal experience of South African politics and my own activism to free Palestinians and secure them basic human rights, which I think qualifies me to state that Israeli racism is at a par or worse than what I witnessed in South Africa.
There is such a control over the international media reporting that many people in the world just do not realise how racist Israelis are and the horrorific circumstances under which the indigenous people (Palestinians) are forced to live. It is frustrating, unjust... heartbreaking. But I have witnessed Palestinian resilience and resistance and I believe that Palestine will not succumb to Israeli genocide.
