Don't Go There! April 28, 2006 9:41 AM

In case anyone in South Bend is in need of housing and has heard of the Catholic Worker House on 502 N Notre Dame Ave(Holy Family)-corner Notre Dame & Cedar near St Joseph Medical Center South Bend-it no longer exists. I asked a friend on the staff for another Catholic Worker House in South Bend if the Holy Family one was closed; she said it was. When the Holy Family house was open, I would donate clothes and bedding to it. I was warmly welcomed by the staff there when I donated anything and even offered a glass of iced tea as if I were visiting a friend. As far as Catholic Worker houses in South Bend go, we have a small community of them, named after St Peter Claver, in South Bend. I can't give out information on their exact location right now because they're in transition. They tried to get a zoning variance so they could continue as a multi-family house in a single family neighborhood. The city council voted 7-2 against the variance so they have to find a house in another neighborhood. The St Peter Claver Catholic Worker will be opening a drop-in center soon near the Center for the Homeless. Even though the drop-in center would not take in overnight guests, one can go over there, once it's open, and take a shower or eat a meal.  [ send green star]
