Welcome April 19, 2006 4:03 PM

I've set up this group so that anyone who is against dolphins in captivty can come here and take part in discussions for the benefit of dolphins. I organised a campaign to fight against the construction of a dolphinarium last year and won! I'd like to help others win similar battles and hopefully by sharing information here, we can all help each other. Please post an introduction about youself and hopefully very useful discussions will start up soon! I look forward to seeing how this group grows and if anyone would like to help me host it just drop me a line. Cheers Lisa (Bermuda)  [ send green star]

MY THOUGHTS April 19, 2006 9:20 PM

THIS MIGHT NOT BE THE THING TO SAY IN THIS GROUP, BUT I LOVE GOING TO SEAWORLD, JUST TO SEE THE DOLPHINS. I AM BECOMING MORE AWARE OF THEIR CAPTIVITY AND WHAT IT DOES TO THEM NOW, AND NOT ENJOYING SEAWORLD IN THE SAME WAY I DID BEFORE. I DO KNOW THAT IT'S NOT NATURAL FOR THEM TO BE AROUND NOISES,AND WALLS AND SUCH, AND PLAYING BALL IS NOT WHAT THE DO IN THE WILD, BUT ON THE OTHER HAND THEY SEEM TO ENJOY IT."THEY" SAY, IF YOU TRUELY LOVE DOLPHINS, YOU WOULD NOT WANT THEM IN CAPTIVITY. WELL,I KNOW ONE THING, ONCE THEY ARE IN CAPTIVITY, THEY SHOULD NOT BE RELEASED BACK.THEY ARE SHUNNED BY THEIR OWN KIND, AND THEY DON'T EAT, AND USUALLY COME BACK TO PEOPLE. IT'S VERY SAD. DO NOT RELEASE THE ONES THAT HAVE BEEN CAPTIVE, IS MY THINKING, BUT DO STOP THE ONES THAT ARE CATCHING THEM TO BECOME CAPTIVE.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

 April 19, 2006 9:32 PM

I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO KNOW HOW PEOPLE FEEL ABOUT THE U.S. NAVY USING DOLPHINS IN THE WATERS OF IRAQ TO FIND MINES. I HAVE READ THAT THEY ARE SAFE IN DOING THIS, I JUST AM NOT TOTALLY CONVINCED. DOES ANYONE HAVE MORE KNOWLEDGE ON THIS?  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

 April 19, 2006 9:33 PM

MY PROFILE IS JUST THAT! YOU CAN SEE THE DEVICE.I LOVE THIS PHOTO, BUT I PROBABLY SHOULDN'T!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

WELCOME April 20, 2006 5:33 AM

R I HANKYOU FOR THE INVITE NANCY, AND , YES I DO UNDERSTAND YOUR SOMEWHAT MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT THIS.....I SHARE THIS , TOO, I DONT THINK WE SHOULD CATCH THE DOLPHINS AND PUT THEM IN CAPTIVITY, BUT WHEN IT IS DONE, IT IS DONE, AND THEY CANNOT RETURN TO NATURE, BECAUSE THEIR OWN ONES WILL DESTROY THEM, JUST LIKE BIRDS, IF THEY CAN SMELL HUMAN BEING ON A BIRD, A TAME ONE THAT HAS FLOWN OUT OF THE CAGE BY MISTAKE....THE WILD BIRDS WILL DESTROY IT , TOTALLY, SAD BUT TRUE !!!! AND, YES I HAVE ALSO HEARD ABOUT THIS WITH THE DOLPINGS BEINGS USED FOR FINDING MINES IN THE SEA, YEARS AGO, AND I REMEMBER MY FRIEND THEN , AND I, AGREED UPON THIS: IT IS NOT RIGHT TO USES TOTALLY INNOCENT MAMMALS FOR THIS PURPOSE, ESPECIALLY, CONSIDERING ALL THE TECNOLOGY WE HAVE TODAY, WHEN WE CAN COME TO THE MOON ......WE CAN ALSO FIND THE MINES BY TECNOLOGY, AND NOT LETTING THESE WONDERFUL, CLEVER,AND HEALING DOLPHINS, RISK THEIR LIVES IN THIS TERRIBLE WAY !!!!!!!!!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi April 20, 2006 5:57 AM

I just join and want to thank you. I have the same feelings as others. Wildlife is to be free. Yet, when we see them at seaworld it is a way to see them up close, but yet it isn't natural for them. Dolphins are beautiful creatures of God and should be in their natural surrounding which is free to swim the ocean blue.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Thanks for the invite Nancy.. and I see many of my friends here too!!!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

HI EVERYBODY! April 20, 2006 10:26 AM

THANKYOU INGE, IT MAKES ME FEEL A LITTLE BETTER WHEN SOMEONE FEELS THE SAME WAY! MIXED FEELINGS. ALSO, THERE ARE MANY DOLPHINS BORN IN CAPTIVITY, THEY SHOULD NEVER BE RELEASED. ANY COMMENTS ON THAT!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

THANK YOU FOR THE INVITE LORAX (LISA)! I love dolphins and whales. They don't deserve to be tanked up and put on display and be made to perform for human 'amusement'. They are sentient beings and should be free to roam the oceans at their pleasure without interference from Man. T  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

I am here April 20, 2006 3:11 PM

THANKYOU NANCY April 20, 2006 5:45 PM

NANCY THANKS FOR INVITING ME TO THIS GROUP.I HAVE LOVED THESE BEAUTIFUL CREATURES SINCE I WAS A LITTLE GIRL,NOW I'M 57 AND STILL LOVE THEM EVEN MORE.MY NAME IS BRENDA AND I LIVE IN NH.I HAVE BEEN TO SEAWORLD COUPLE OF TIMES AND NO THEY CANNOT BE RETURNED TO THE SEA,BUT I BELIEVE THE ONLY ONES THEY SHOULD TAKE ONLY IF IT'S INJURED OR CANNOT BE RELEASED BACK DUE TO BAD INJURY OR WHATEVER ELSE.THE HEALTY ONES NO LEAVE THEM ALONE. AS FAR AS THE NAVY I SEEN A TV SHOW ON THAT ONCE.THE DOLFINS THEY HAVE,HAVE TO BE WITH THEM NOW FOR THEY ARE LIKE THE SEAWORLD DOLFINS ONLY IN A DIFFERENT WAY,THEY WOULD NOT SURVIVE OUT THERE WITHOUT THERE NAVY MEN WHO TRAIN THEM.THEY DO NOT SWIM ALL THAT WAY LIKE SOME PEOPLE THINK.THEY HAVE A SPECIAL PLATFORM TO LET THEM IN THE WATER AND THEN TO BRING THEM BACK ON SHIP.THEY HAVE A HUGE HUGE POOL OF OCEAN WATER IN THIS POOL.THEN THEY ARE FED AND I'M SURE LOVED.THEY ARE VERY WELL TAKEN CARE OF BY THE NAVY FOR IT TAKES TRUST,AND LOTS OF TRAINING FOR THESE DOLFINS.SO PLEASE DON'T LET THE NAVY SCARE YOU FOR THEM THEY ARE WELL TAKEN CARE OF. PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW I CAN HELP IN ANY WAY. TALK SOON BRENDA P PS OH WHEN BACK FROM DUTY TO THE STATES THESE DOLFINS DO NOT STAY ON BOARD THEY HAVE A PLACE NEAR THE OCEAN FOR THEM.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Thanks for the invite, Nan April 20, 2006 8:34 PM

I think the ideal of all animals living free is beautiful. I know, however, that once an animal has lived in captivity, it is no longer afraid of humans and releasing them into the wild can at times be worse for them than keeping them where they can be kept safe. Dolphins, especially, who have lived in captivity have approached boats and gone without food for days because they have become so dependent on humans. (Hurricane Katrina). They do not fear boats, including fishing boats dragging nets, which can kill them. I think it would be more realistic to make those who are living in captivity, a place that resembles thier natural habitat, where they can have a comfortable and healthy life. Those who were taken became our responsibility, and we have to take care of them for the rest of their lives. Of course, I don't think we should take any more out of the ocean. From what I understand, many of those who were brought into captivity, were accidentally caught in tuna nets, (buy only dolphin safe tuna, if you eat it), and that when this does happen, the dolphin is very lucky if it survives. I have to add, that releasing those born into captivity sounds, at first, like a good idea. If the juvenile is able to remain with it's mother, until maturity, I think that would have to be the best for the emotional developement of the animal, but how do you get it so it doesn't have that human interaction or the ability to fend for itself in the wild? Free Willy, Keiko, though a different species, was released after living it's life in a facility. He was trained in the open ocean on how to hunt, and appeared to be able to succeed in the wild, but on release, headed straight for Norway, caught pnemonia and died. (I think there is something that may alter an animals immune system/physiology after living in controlled conditions for an extended period of time.) Marine facilities that have stranding facilities, have learned that in order for the animals to have the best chances of survival upon release back into the wild, minimal human interaction is necessary. Other than when it is absolutely necessary to tube-feed a very young or force-feed a very sick animal, they do not even see human hands near their food. Any animal that associates man with food, is doomed upon release into the wild. I hope that you'll understand that it is only responsible to release animals, including dolphins, into the wild, that are completely able to fend for themselves and have not developed a close relationship with humans.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Thanks Nancy for the invite. These are one of the most beautiful animals. They bring so much joy when you are sailing and you see them swimming along side of the boat.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

I am not suggesting we free captive dolphins!!! April 20, 2006 9:22 PM

Sorry if the group name is confusing... this is against PUTTING them in captivty in the first place not releasing them once they are there. L.  [ send green star]

Thanks Lisa for the invite... Living in Fl I've had the wonderful opportunity to see dolphins do exactly what they are supposed to do while swimming in the ocean...just "be a dolphin". Usually feeding....tho sometimes they'll play. It's one of life's treasures to watch.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Interesting! April 28, 2006 9:55 PM

I am guilty of having seen the dolphins in Baltimore,Vegas and SeaWorld (when I was in my youth).  Even then, I was torn and thought, I shouldn't support this as I knew they should not be there. Yet, I sat for hours on end just starring and admiring and wondering.  I can understand the delima. "Every creature should be allowed the choice of what they want and/or need!"  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

sorry I haven't been around much - it doesn't seem like anyone on here wants to talk about campaigning against dolphins in captivty... so I until then - I'm taking a back seat.

but if you want changes done - I'll do my best

Updates!! September 04, 2006 1:34 AM

Hi everyone - sorry it's been a long time coming but I have just added a bunch of information links about dolphins in captivity and also - a thread about the Taiji hint. Feel free to add your own links to these threads or simply being expressing your feelings about dolphins in captivity. The more people who learn about how terrible these places really are - the less customers they will get and the more dolphins will be left FREE!

So please pass some of this info onto your friends and - invite them to this group!

I have also added RSS feeds from the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society. If anyone knows of any other feeds they think I should add here please make suggestions!

Thanks everyone!

Lisa.
