I like being around westerners who work for non-profit organisations that run projects across Africa.one, their ubiquitous presence is always a reminder of the failure of leadership that has been the lot of Africans since the colonialists left there continent.two, even though they go to great length not to appear so,they often come across as patronising.Their Africa is always dark, unprepossesing, hopeless, helpless and in need of their help.No bright spot.No silver lining. No hope. I once had my fill of this depressing meal at a conference at the Columbia University,New York in march 2006.The conference had started well enough and I was having a swell time untill an acedemic came up to introduce renowned economist and professor,Jeffrey Sachs,to the packed hall. That fellows introduction soured my mood. I cant even remember His name now,But I think he set a dark tone for the afternoon. He donned Sachs in a messianic garb and went on about the difference that his intellect was making in the "third world".He also added that people in the developing countries ought to remain very grateful to the professor"for all he has done for them" As if on cue, other speakers also spoke from the same notes, painting Africa in dark hues;in the dark colours of disease ,drought and dead.Of course, these comments made me hopping depressed. In the end,the only good memory I took home from the conference was the shoptalk the night before,at he home of Joseph Stiliglitz, the Nobel Prize economist, who also organises the yearly conference on globalisation;and a wonderful paper on help the poor in Africa. An American-India. Some of the speakers made it looks as if Africa was doomed without outside help.Their help yet.this was a period when many African economies were growing at chart-bursting rates and conflicts had been reduced by more than half.I have seen African homeless kids doomed to going around the world with begging bowls;of course, with the help of Sachs and Bonos of this world.Such talks nblittle the tremendous energy that Africans, particularly in the private and informal sectors, are investing in changing their lives. They also make it appear as if they are doomed without our help.Even as I concede Sachs role as a leading advocate in the fight against poverty and hunger,I know it would take more than the efforts of these men to change the lives of the African Children. Microsoft founder,Bill Gates, and his wife Melinda.gave a grant of $50m,for oral polio vaccine drops,in His battle against ignorance, poverty and disease, especially in Nigeria. The donation as used to purchase 100million doses of oral polio vaccines. The fact that this this donation is more about the global fight against polio than an expression of the love of the Gates for Nigeria doesnt diminish the altruism behind it.Such altruism is the reason why philanthropy is a major force behind the advances in science, the arts, education in the west. Each year, philantropists pour billions into research and educational.According to the Chronicle of philanthropy,in 2007,about $306bn was donated to universities, foundations, museums and libaries, hospitals and medical centers, schools, arts groups, medical research, community foundations, children and youths and historic preservation in the US alone. New York Mayor Micheal R.Bloomberg, the billionaire owner of Bloomerg, whose fortune as estimated to be $20bn before the economic melt down, donated $205 million to about 1100 groups. He is quoted as saying that philantrophy as not just a responsibility, but as privilege,"He as also said that His contributions will not decrease this year despite the financial crisis. The Problem When one thinks of Africa, poverty, war, and the AIDS crises often come to mind. Practices of the past and policies of governments and financial institutions continue to hinder the continent from achieving an atmosphere where most individuals could look towards a promising future. Specifically, in Nigeria, the future is made bleak by the fighting between Muslims and Christians. Massacres, in Gods name, are too often the norm. As in all wars and fighting, it is the children that are most vulnerable. Refugee status, sickness, rape, incarceration for stealing food are all problems that are placed upon the children.
