Need help for a Petiton September 01, 2006 11:44 AM
I have noticed in recent years that Amber Alert has failed to issue AA alerts for many many missing children, based on the fact that each state has it's own official "Non-Policy" for the issue of Amber Alerts.
It seems that Amber Alerts are only issued in cases where the parent's are offering money, or after the child has been missing for weeks, or (god forbid *sarcastically rolls eyes*) the media is heavily involved.
This recent incident with Marcus Fiesel just goes to show that Amber Alert does fail, because police officers are not forced to file the madatory paperwork. Amber Alert was designed to protect our children, but it's the detectives who are to lazy to file the paperwork who help AA fail.
I was planning on starting a petition to force a National Amber Alert Policy which would require any officer investigating the dissapearance of a child to file the paperwork within 48 hours of the child missing.
Regardless of circumstances, a Missing child is just that MISSING!!! Whether they are runaways, abductions, or just plain missing; Amber Alert was designed to protect them, and yet this is not used in the proper way.
WE have proven over and over that the first 48 hours are critical to finding the answers in any case, whether murder, or in this case RUNAWAYS and ABDUCTIONS.
So why is it that police officers are not being punished for handeling a Missing child case wrong? Why are they not being suspended for mishandeling the case, if it where a murder case and they mishandled info they would be suspended immediately.
I only request one thing....
A NATIONAL AMBER ALERT POLICY
In all 50 states, an investigating officer must file an Amber Alert for the missing child within the first 48 hours, with the ideal timeframe being 24 hours, with NO exceptions (unless the child has been found).
If failing to follow this the Detective in charge should be punished in some way, either by mandatory suspension, or by demotion, or something.
WOULD ANYONE LIKE TO HELP ME CREATE THIS PETITION? AS I AM UNSURE HOW TO GO ABOUT IT.
