Newest Healthcare Reform Actions November 11, 2009 2:19 PM

Newest Healthcare Reform Actions Please do any, or all, you can :) This Action, on Change.org, the url :) Newest Healthcare Reform Acts :) http://healthcare.change.org/actions/view/newest_healthcare_reform_acts http://www.change.org/profile/189788/actions Stop Stupac the Amendment, or any version of it. As well, no trigger, because triggers don't get pulled. Also, please, advocate for singlepayer healthcare, with Community First Choice Option and CLASS Act (Community Choice Act for the handicapped, elderly, autistic, disabled, etc.); H.R. 676 & S. 703, are the best of the lot, so far. support women's healthcare now :) http://womensrights.change.org/actions/view/support_womens_healthcare_now Related actions and group :) Healthcare Reform Actions :) http://healthcare.change.org/actions/view/healthcare_reform_actions http://www.change.org/profile/189788/actions http://www.singlepayeraction.org//join.html AAUW Action Network: An Attack on Reproductive Health Care: New Domestic Gag Rule :) On Saturday night, the House passed the largest health care overhaul bill in 40 years. Many of AAUW's key priorities were included in the Affordable Health Care for America Act (H.R. 3962), including coverage for maternity care, preventive care, an end to gender rating, and other protections for women. It's a victory for millions of Americans who are one step closer to quality, affordable health care. Unfortunately, this victory came at a price that is outrageous and unacceptable. Anti-choice representatives also passed an amendment to the bill that will severely undermine women's access to complete and safe reproductive health care services. The amendment, offered by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI), will eliminate coverage for abortion services in the public option. Current law already bans the use of federal dollars to pay for abortion, but this amendment goes further by prohibiting women who receive federal subsidies from purchasing a comprehensive insurance plan that includes abortion services. Private plans that offer abortion coverage would be banned from receiving funding. This type of restriction would force private insurance companies to choose between eliminating abortion coverage for all insured members and being eligible to serve patients by receiving federal subsidies. As a result, millions of women who have this coverage now would lose it, effectively ending coverage for abortion services and instituting what amounts to a domestic gag rule. Women who could afford it could pay extra for a "rider" policy to cover such services, but the very nature of unplanned pregnancies makes this an illogical and impractical notion. AAUW has long advocated for choice in the determination of one's reproductive life and increased access to health care and family planning services. There's no doubt that health care reform is desperately needed, but it should not come on the backs of women. A fundamental principle of health care has always been to "do no harm." Make no mistake; the Stupak amendment does just that--leaving millions of women worse off than they were before. This is the biggest attempt to ban abortion services in years, and a similar amendment is already in the works in the Senate. Take Action: Contact your senators today and urge them to oppose any amendments that jeopardize women's access to complete reproductive health care coverage. Then, take another minute to contact your representative about his or her vote on the Stupak amendment :) Senate: http://www.capwiz.com/aauw/issues/alert/?alertid=14329551 House: http://www.capwiz.com/aauw/issues/alert/?alertid=14329496&type=CO Center for Reproductive Rights: TAKE ACTION: The Fight is Not Over Yet :) Saturday's House vote was a terrible blow for women's health and rights -- but the fight is not over yet. The Pro-Choice Caucus has crafted a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi vowing to oppose a healthcare bill that restricts a woman's right to choose any further than current law. Tell your Members of Congress to sign the letter and show their support for American women! :) http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5971/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=1275 Planned Parenthood Action: A painful blow to women's health care :) While there are some who are satisfied with the health care reform bill that passed in the House of Representatives late Saturday night, I am not one of them. When it came down to it, Congress passed a bill that will undercut women's access to comprehensive health care. Despite hundreds of thousands of voters like you and me who called on members of Congress to include women's health care in health care reform, the bill that passed Saturday night includes a ban on private abortion coverage for millions of women and would prohibit it in the new "public option." Opponents of legal abortion and health care for women are emboldened by Saturday night's vote and ready to bring their ban on abortion to the Senate floor. But now it's our turn. And this time we are going to use our strongest weapon: the White House. That's why, today, we are calling on President Obama :) http://www.ppaction.org/campaign/hcr09bse_af/xkwgn64z778xn8d?qp_source=hcr09bse%5fe1%5faf Mobilization for Health Care for All :) Two Health Care Advocates Remain in Jail, Take Action To Support their Cause Now :) Yesterday morning, Mobilization for Health Care for All made another urgent demand to get insurance money out of our democracy so that real reform will not be blocked in America. http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1312/t/10007/petition.jsp?petition_KEY=2159 to sign a petition to Sen. Time for Civil Disobedience :) September 29, 2009 7:37 PM

Time for Civil Disobedience :) This Action, on Change.org, the url :) Healthcare-NOW! :) http://womensrights.change.org/actions/view/healthcare-now_2 http://www.change.org/profile/189788/actions It's time to take action! :) Join our new campaign of non-violent, civil disobedience targeting the private health insurance industry We need your support for a new campaign of non-violent, civil disobedience targeting the private health insurance industry. This past spring, 13 brave individuals were arrested for disrupting Senate Finance hearings on health reform, chaired by Sen. Max Baucus. They were disgusted with witness panels, filled with private insurance execs and their cronies, that did NOT include even one single-payer expert. Since Baucus only listened to the interests of millionaire CEOs and their lobbyists, it should be no surprise that a former CIGNA exec. called the Senate Finance Committee's recently released bill, "a gift to the private health insurance industry that should be renamed the 'Insurance Industry Profit Protection and Enhancement Act.'" We can't stand for this disaster. The Mobilization for Health Care for All http://www.mobilizeforhealthcare.org/ is launching a campaign of nonviolent sit-ins at insurance company offices so we can stand up to end a system that profits by denying people care and puts insurance company bureaucrats between doctors and patients. Time for Medicare for all, a single-payer, national healthcare system. Healthcare-NOW! has decided to support this effort, and to encourage local coalitions in our network that are ready and willing to participate. The PHIMG (Private Health Insurance Must Go) coalition in NYC will begin this campaign on September 29th. Other local groups are planning subsequent actions. Actions may vary, but the central idea is to target major private insurance companies because they must not, and can not, be part of any solution to our healthcare crisis. We need your help. Let us know if you'd like to participate in, or organize, a civil disobedience action near you. Go here to sign up http://www.mobilizeforhealthcare.org/ to sit in and join the nonviolent resistance today! Another way you can help make this campaign successful is with a donation. Citizen co-sponsor of public option resolution actions: September 03, 2009 1:20 AM

Citizen co-sponsor of public option resolution actions: CREDO Action: Become a citizen co-sponsor of our public option resolution! :) This Action, on Change.org, the url :) citizen co-sponsor public option :) http://socialentrepreneurship.change.org/actions/view/citizen_co-sponsor_public_option http://www.change.org/profile/189788/actions Build support for the public option at the local level. Become a citizen co-sponsor of our public option resolution. http://action.firedoglake.com/page/s/resolved?source=resolution&subsource=credo Become a citizen co-sponsor of our resolution demanding inclusion of a strong public health insurance option in any health care bill passed this year. Then get other local groups involved. All politics is local. So the work you can do in your community to fight for a robust public option can have a huge impact. That is why CREDO Action is teaming up with Democracy for America and the blog FireDogLake.com to get local groups across the country to pass a resolution in support of the public option. The first thing you can do to help in this effort is to become a citizen co-sponsor of the resolution. That way, when our volunteers approach local groups asking them to sign onto the resolution as well, the groups will see that the community supports them taking a strong stand. The local progressive groups our volunteers will ask to pass our resolution are uniquely suited to pressuring members of Congress. Representatives need local groups — whether they are Democratic clubs, the local Drinking Liberally or a chapter of a larger political organization — to stay in office. Often times, Representatives or their senior staff will have strong working relationships with the leaders of these types of organizations. But before we can get local groups to sign onto our resolution, we need to show that the community supports them. Can you sign on as a citizen co-sponsor of this resolution and let us know if there are any groups in your area that you can help us target? Local political groups represent a vital leverage point that can help us trans http://action.firedoglake.com/page/s/resolved?source=resolution&subsource=credo late the tremendous grassroots support for a public option into legislative action. Help us do this by signing on as a citizen co-sponsor so we can take the resolution to groups in your area. Thank you for working to build a better world. Matt Lockshin Campaign Manager, CREDO Mobile P.S. If you know progressives in your area who are very politically active, please take a moment to forward this e-mail to them to increase the chance that the right groups will see and pass this resolution. If so, then we need your help today. Sign up to pass Public Option Resolutions with your local groups. http://action.firedoglake.com/page/s/resolved?source=resolutions&subsource=fdl We're on our way to holding progressives to support only a strong public option for health care reform, but there's much more to be done. For weeks, you've been calling your representatives and attending town hall meetings. This pressure from the local level has been so helpful in holding the line for real reform. Now we need to step it up to the next level. Firedoglake, CREDO Mobile, and Democracy for America are teaming up on this new initiative. We want local groups and committees to pass resolutions calling on members of Congress to pledge to vote against any health care bill that doesn't have a strong public option. Will you work to help pass Public Option Resolutions in your local groups? Click here to sign up to work with your local groups to pass Public Option Resolutions. http://action.firedoglake.com/page/s/resolved?source=resolutions&subsource=fdl How do we know that this works? Look at what just happened in Montana. Last week we reported that a coalition of eighteen Montana Democratic Central Committees issued a Unified Statement. "The statement sends a loud and clear message to their Senator: Any health care reform package coming out of his Senate Finance Committee must contain, at a minimum, a provision for a strong public option."Sen. Baucus, who chairs the Senate Finance Committee, responded immediately to this kind of organizing. "Senator Max Baucus has finally broken his silence regarding his personal position on including a public option in health care reform legislation in an unprecedented conference call to Montana Democratic central committee chairs; the powerful leader of the Senate Finance Committee told his strongest supporters that he supported a public option."Now, we don't know yet if Baucus will keep this position when it comes to a vote. But that's why it's so important for us to mobilize local groups to keep up the pressure to make sure he does. The only way we can make this happen is for people like you to step up and help pass Public Option Resolutions in your local groups. Sign up to pass P  [ send green star]

Decriminalize Mental Illness; End Government Cover-up re: Larry Neal's Death July 24, 2009 10:44 PM

DIFFABLED PERSONS SHOULD NOT BE CRIMINALIZED, ABUSED, OR KILLED FOR REASON OF THEIR HEALTH STATUS. YET THIS IS DONE REGULARLY, CAUSING 1.25 MILLION PSYCHIATRIC PATIENTS TO BE PRESENTLY IMPRISONED. SEE See http://www.care2.com/c2c/share/detail/1203018 Since the reduction in facilities and services to America's mentally ill, the criminal justice budget (including court costs, lawyer fees for the indigent, and $50 billion annually to prisons) has risen to around $185 billion per year. There has been no taxpayer savings in imprisoning rather than hospitalizing sick people or facilitating community care on a broader scale. In fact, the results have been prison overcrowding, increased burden on criminal courts, a drain of financial resources from other needed domestic programs, and avoidable suffering and deaths among the mentally ill and others. Several bills are before Congress to bring needed change. Interested persons can contact their representatives via email to express an interest in WHAT HAPPENED TO LARRY NEAL and the bills below by using this link: www.house.gov/writerep/ ~ Sen. Jim Webb (VA-D) introduced The National Criminal Justice Act of 2009 calling for a national commission to "undertake a top-to-bottom review of our entire criminal justice system." ~ Rep. Johnson (TX-30) introduced H.R. 619 to resume Medicaid payments for care in mental institutions (withdrawal of these funds helped cause hospital closings); and H.R. 766 to provide housing and financial counseling for individuals before their release from inpatient or residential institutions. TITLE 42 > CHAPTER 21 > SUBCHAPTER I > § 1983 § 1983. Civil action for deprivation of rights Every person who, under color of any statute, ordinance, regulation, custom, or usage, of any State or Territory or the District of Columbia, subjects, or causes to be subjected, any citizen of the United States or other person within the jurisdiction thereof to the deprivation of any rights, privileges, or immunities secured by the Constitution and laws, shall be liable to the party injured in an action at law, suit in equity, or other proper proceeding for redress, except that in any action brought against a judicial officer for an act or omission taken in such officer’s judicial capacity, injunctive relief shall not be granted unless a declaratory decree was violated or declaratory relief was unavailable. For the purposes of this section, any Act of Congress applicable exclusively to the District of Columbia shall be considered to be a statute of the District of Columbia. The treatment of Americans with mental disabilities as evidenced by the secret arrest and wrongful death of Larry Neal and the denial of his family's right to due process of law are examples of a problem Rev. ADAPT Actions: Action Alert; etc.. :) July 02, 2009 1:20 AM

Action, on Change.org, the url :) ADAPT Acts :) http://autism.change.org/actions/view/adapt_acts_2 Fw: Action Alert You could write to Dawn Russell dawn@atlantiscommunityinc.com or Mike Oxford tilrc@tilc.org for a copy of the letter. Stephanie **************** To: ADAPT From: Mike O and Dawn Subject: Advocacy Alert / Act Now! We are now, in a fight for our lives, to include the Community Choice Act (CCA) in health reform. We are working to have CCA added to health reform, as a demonstration project. What this means is CCA, the whole bill including the mandatory benefits, would happen in around 5 states. This would allow us to test the bill and provide concrete answers to the questions and issues we keep running into such as run-away costs and cross-disability services. We must create a nationwide tidal wave to get CCA added as a demonstration project. The ADAPT army and other disability activists and advocates can lead the way to get this done, if we massively act now. Our best chance to get this win is to get the House to add the CCA demonstration added to the House health bill. Danny Davis office has been very helpful. Thanks everyone for your hard work. Here is what we need to do: 1. Call YOUR Representative and ask that they support including a CCA demonstration project to the House health reform bill. Also, if any of the Democratic Energy and Commerce Committee members are from your state, contact them, too! The demonstration would be for CCA as a whole in around five states. The purpose of the demonstration would be to test the assumptions of the bill including that it would be cost effective, that the new cross-disability, cross-age services would work well, etc. Your Representatives and the Committee members from your state, should contact House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman, and let him know that they support adding CCA to the House Health Reform bill. If YOUR Representative is a member of one of these committees, below (Energy and Commerce or Ways and Means) then it is incredibly important that they do this! 2. Now, Universal Healthcare :) April 01, 2009 5:38 PM

Now, Universal Healthcare :) Don't stop, keep the pressure up, advocate :) These Actions on Change.org, the url :) Now Universal Healthcare :) http://autism.change.org/actions/view/now_universal_healthcare Sample Letters :) Subject: Please, Save our Country, Stop Lobbyiests trying to kill any health plan :) Dear Sirs, Hello. This is the year that significant health care reform legislation must be enacted. Getting it done won't be easy. The insurance industry, the pharmaceutical industry, hospital corporations and other major health care players will do their best to derail meaningful reform. With President Obama's support and encouragement, Congress can avoid being captured by the corporate lobbyists and can pass legislation assuring quality, affordable health care for everyone. The American people demand no less. Thank you. Truly, (add your name, address, and phone # (needed for letters to the editor)) Subject: Please, Save our economy, Put single-payer health insurance on the table :) Dear Sirs, Hello. Americans deserve a simple, efficient, single-payer health care system – a universal system designed along the lines of Medicare. House Resolution 676, The United States National Health Insurance Act, establishes such a system. It will provide better care for everyone, at a reduced cost. Vote for (All the above) Changing everything.... (in Other section) A Green jobs movement would solve many problems, at once, yet, without changing everything, elementally, nothing we all do will be enough :) reality Friends and fellow virtual community members seeking change, truth, et al, please check out this :) james mnordlund reality (aja) :) (All) Changing everything.... (in Other section) Please go to: http://www.change.org/ideas/view/all_changing_everything and start the change that will be what's needed! Without turning 360 degrees around, back to the evolution and the future, "we,...", won't be able to stop the convolutions enforcer, the remocrat conspiracy, from exterminating humanity and large mammals; thereby, dictating their extinction, etc.. The main reasons why they have held power are most people in the united suck of assassins are fascist, at minimum, and conspirators of one kind or another; all of whom embrace the devolutionary direction. Those conspiracies conspire together, making fascism, at minimum, the 'American' way of life. As time goes on, that embracing of the convolution will determine, more and more, that almost all people will be conspirators; the only difference between them being which conspiracy they directly serve- while serving conspiracy itself, and determining the largest conspiracy, the remocratic one, will gain more and more power as conspiracy replaces humanity, and extremism replaces compassion (la machine replaces the life), etc.. Changing everything seems large, yet, changing the direction of everything, back to the evolution's, is easy; and will effect the change of everything, in time- hopefully, on time. Viva la evolution. james m nordlund reality (aja) :)  [ send green star]

Soldiers Dropping from Psych Drugs- Families Want...You...help November 15, 2008 1:14 AM

Soldiers Dropping from Psych Drugs - Families Want Publicity - You can help! Help the families of these soliders. Send the below article to everyone you know. And also send it to your local legisltors and veteran's groups. "I believe there are many more soldiers and Marines who have died in their sleep just like the four in West Virginia," said Mr. White, a retired high school principal. "I think what we have found is just the tip of the iceberg, but we need more national publicity to help us find others who have lost loved ones and are looking for answers." Washington Times EXCLUSIVE: After death of son, dad takes cases to Capitol Hill HURRICANE, W.Va. Andrea Billups and Audrey Hudson Thursday, November 13, 2008 A West Virginia man whose son survived the battlefields of Iraq only to die in his sleep at home is crusading to find other military families whose loved ones also have died after taking drugs prescribed for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Stan White's son Andrew, who was found dead in bed at the family's Cross Lanes, W.Va., home on Feb. 12, 2007, is one among a cluster of young veterans in the state who have died in their sleep with little explanation. Now Mr. White wants the federal government to monitor the drugs it prescribes to some 375,000 soldiers who have been diagnosed with mental trauma. Shirley White of Cross Lanes, Andrew's mother, says she and her husband want an investigation into the medications prescribed to their son and other veterans who died. So far, he has identified nine veterans across the country - including four in West Virginia - who have died in their sleep after taking antidepressant and antipsychotic medications. Mr. White has met with members of Congress and asked for Capitol Hill hearings to investigate the deaths. His research prompted a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) investigation into Andrew's and one other death, which were found to have been caused by "combined drug intoxication." But the investigation could not determine whether the prescribed medications were at fault. The father is taking up the crusade amid increased criticism of VA medical treatment of veterans suffering PTSD upon their return from Iraq or Afghanistan, including media and government reports that several VA centers failed to adequately care for patients and inform them of potentially dangerous drug side effects. Finding out why his son died and keeping others from suffering a similar fate has become a personal cause for Mr. White. "Our goal was to find out if the medications are safe," said Mr. White, who, with his wife, continues to grieve the loss of his son. "If they are, that needs to be publicized. But if they are not, that also needs to be publicized as well. "I believe there are many more soldiers and Marines who have died in their sleep just like the four in West Virginia," said Mr. White, a retired high school principal. "I think what we have found is just the tip of the iceberg, but we need more national publicity to help us find others who have lost loved ones and are looking for answers." The VA's Office of Inspector General conducted a review of the quality of care received by Marine Cpl. Andrew White and another veteran whose name was not made public but whom The Washington Times was able to identify as Army National Guard Sgt. Eric Layne, an Iraq war veteran. According to the Aug. 14 findings, the two combat veterans were taking three prescribed psychiatric medications: • Paroxetine - an antidepressant that can produce panic attacks, sleeping problems and suicidal thoughts. • Clonazepam - an anticonvulsive that should not be used with alcohol or other drugs, including narcotics or barbiturates. • Quetiapine - an antipsychotic used to treat schizophrenia but, combined with clonazepam, can increase sedative effects. "The medical examiner found that these patients died from combined drug intoxication involving prescribed and nonprescribed medications," the report said. "In the presence of PTSD, other mental health conditions, and uncertain use of medications by patients, we are unable to draw conclusions about the relationship between medication regimens and these deaths." The report said Cpl. White "died as a result of combined drug intoxication," including a nonprescribed medication that the IG declined to identify. "No contributory natural diseases or physical injuries were identified," the report said. Sgt. Layne died as a result of the VA-prescribed drugs and two unidentified nonprescribed medications, "under circumstances significant for fatal over-use of prescribed paroxetine" along with "apparent misuse of nonprescribed medications of uncertain intentionality." The VA conducted an agencywide analysis of all cases of death among veterans who were taking a combination of the same drugs and "found no high mortality rate in veterans in the referenced group compared to those taking other similar psychotropic combinations or veterans taking the single agents," said VA spokeswoman Alison Aikele, who did not specify the death rate. Nevertheless, a California neurologist who contacted Mr. White after reading about his efforts to investigate the veterans' deaths in a local newspaper article, expressed alarm over seemingly healthy young veterans suddenly dying in their sleep. "The drugs and the occurrence there in the four vets in West Virginia really jumps out at you," said Dr. Fred Baughman of El Cajon, Calif. "They are seemingly OK, and then they go to bed and they die in their sleep. "The constant drugs that all four of them are on are the Paxil [paroxetine] and Seroquel [quetiapine]," said Dr. Baughman, who has long had his own concerns about PTSD drug prescriptions in the military. Miss Aikele said it is not unusual for veterans suffering PTSD to be prescribed several psychotropic drugs for various symptoms...  [ send green star]

Thanx, friend :) November 07, 2008 7:33 PM

Dear Mary N., et al, Hola, now that Sadam Barack Hussein Osama Obama Bin Laden is President, most beneficiently, by the most merciful grace of Allah, the most High, maybe the united suck of assassins will get along a little better with their brothers and sisters in the Middle East, what do you think? It’s cool when people who are interested in spirituality share, so, here’s a part of an essai on the subject I wrote over 5 years ago; I thought you might find interesting. The basis of all relations, including with self, and all studies, including activism and advocacy, are also environmental, spiritual, yet, the delusional construct of 'materialism' has all but done away with most of those discernments. I feel the asking of the why "we, …." don't necessarily have spiritual human relationships is as interesting a question as who do we have them with, if anybody, per se, as all relations actually have some spirituality to them. As well, won’t spirituality help us rise to the occasion, since even deductive logic, or most any other kind, has fallen from vogue for decades now, being replaced by market desired and political directed numbing and dumbing down of society at large (concentration of censorship and determination of ownership by the multimedia, etc., conspiracies), and small (the individual soma's perception being dulled, ‘time’ being ‘used’ in needed ‘survival mode‘, and feelings, real power, being suppressed, repressed, and subjugated to ‘necessary’ requirements of supposed professionalism, etc.); with unimaginably deleterious effects to the evolution. Like spirituality, even logic has to be taught again, as in Ivan Illich's "Deschooling Society". Yet, for e.g., if we look at the vast knowledge, mystery, and wonder, of the spirituality of Vishnu and the concurrent technology spanning the last 10,000 years, for example, and the river of life, we can easily discern how information processing, technology, war, greed, scarcity ( the corporate structure‘s convolutions devolutionary direction ), have advanced astronomically, while knowledge, spirituality, humanity, mythos, religion, psychology, peace, life, abundance, et al ( the evolutionary one ), have only advanced exponentially. Technology used to be a tool in man's hand, now man has become the tool, and technology the hand. While it grows in every way, man devolves day by day. Also, the corporate structure's ( and its puppets: gov'ts, organized religions, etc. ) convolution's direction of devolution of society has wrought an astronomical decrease in humanities' potential, to the point where we may not even avoid the extinction we've almost determined on our horizon, yet, in potentia, an individual soma is illimitable; and hopefully, "we,….", can. With the advancing onslaught of time being speed up by the technocracies' destruction of ecosystems leading to their permanently altering weather cycles, and 200 year apart super cyclones coming once every 50 years or shorter, "we,…", the people, have little time to stop the devolutionary direction of the convolution in its tract ( rote ), and turn humanity around 360 degrees, back to the future and evolution. Their dictating that these, supposedly, natural disasters happen with greater severity and frequency is the paradigm changer determining the extermination of humanity and large mammals; en route to their extinction. It may not be as long as 15 years, so, we do what we can; no? Certainly the studies of spirituality, as not separate from every aspect of reality ( as there's no separation and not no separation, at once ), including others, must be a root of that potential future for humanity; only, possibly, created through uplifting all human potential now- through actuation of self-actuation, to begin with. Here's a spiritual study in poetic form that informs discernments of all life being necessary threads in the fabric of life :) "If there was something in the air If there was something in the wind If there was something in the trees or bushes That could be pronounced and once was overheard by animals, Let this Sacred Knowledge be returned to us again." Artharvaveda (VII, 66) as quoted in Entering the Circle As well, the understanding that spirituality is part of all life and relations with others, ( or can be if one thinks it's not ) is predicated on the study of self, and others as life, being different, though, essentially 'not different'. This while people don't only dislike what they can't 'identify' with or understand, they tend to ostracize them, or it. For e.g., this is compensatory because, if it's not in their life, then they won't have to think or feel more to relate to the genuine person, experiences; which makes them "feel and think" of themselves as ‘together‘. They also, thereby, hope to not "have to" actually think about their lives, feel their feelings ( the roots of spirituality ); the “going along to get along” game they play on themselves. They also do this because, their conformity, a mirror image of themselves, is all they allow themselves to see and consider, in a street term, their “have it like that“, etc., which assuages their fears that relate to acceptance and control, their complicity in their own oppression, etc.; for e.g., being competent, having some sense of mastery over one’s life, being liked, surviving, succeeding, fitting in, etc.. It’s difficult, yet, if one keeps struggling, the growth potential, alone, makes being more real well worth it; i.m.h.o.. As well, I think there's, at least, a step further anyone can take that line of inquiry. For, yes, the questioners have their own agendas, they want us to play into, yet, the labelers aren't the only ones. What about ourselves and our agendas? What, with keeping Jung's analysis in mind that 80 % of every action, thought, feeling we have is compensatory, in relation to our past and present, this would....  [ send green star]

State of Confusion: Pol. Manipulation, Assault USA Mind November 02, 2008 11:01 PM

State of Confusion: Political Manipulation and the Assault on the American Mind - A "Rosetta Stone" for Understanding Politics by Dr. Bryant Welch Dear Colleagues, Over the summer we advised you of the fascinating new book by Dr. Bryant Welch entitled State of Confusion: Political Manipulation and the Assault on the American Mind. Dr. Welch's book is generating a lot of buzz throughout the blogosphere and we thought you might be interested in what other reviewers have been saying. Buzzflash.com Review: This is one of those few books -- and a bit undernoticed -- that is a virtual Rosetta stone to understanding how so many Americans are living in an alternative reality. They have been emotionally and psychologically manipulated by a "manufactured reality" of the right wing consortium: think tanks, public relations spin, advertising techniques, corporate media, psychological tactics, and politicians, among others. The author, a psychologist/attorney, compares the process we have gone through as a nation in the last 30 years -- and particularly the last 8 years -- to a film from 1944: "Gaslight" - starring Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman). Directed by George Cukor, it is distinctly Hitchcockian in its rendering. We will quote directly from the first chapter of "State of Delusion": "The term gaslighting comes from the 1944 film...in which a psychopathic husband coveting his wife's property tries to drive his dependent young bride insane by covertly manipulating her environment, making her increasingly perplexed and uncertain. Among other things, he raises and lowers the gaslights in the house while denying to the wife that there has been any change in the lighting. While he feigns genuine concern for her, he cleverly isolates her from any contact with the rest of the world that might interfere with his propaganda-like assault on her sense of reality.... "In the mental health profession, gaslighting refers to a series of mind games that prey on our limited ability to tolerate much ambiguity or uncertainty about what is happening in our important areas of our lives. It is a highly destructive form of psychological manipulation that undercuts trust in our sense of reality and results in confusion and perplexity. If the victims of gaslighting do not come up with a resolution for the perplexity, they will act in an increasingly primitive and irrational fashion. This is what has been done to large segments of America." Oh, dear me, how elitist to reveal the truth! We could say much more, particularly the tell-tale sign of attacking and then claiming "victimization." Rove is a master at this and that is what John McCain did after subliminally raising race in an ad (black man/white women) and then claiming that Obama "played the race card." This is just one of the recurrent patterns that appears in the process of "gaslighting" the American people by the immoral right wing. Of course, the corporate media (which controls most book reviews) isn't eager to publicize a book that posits that a large segment of the American population (you can find a chunk of them regularly watching FOX News) have been brainwashed, emotionally manipulated, and embedded with a false sense of reality. That's because the corporate media is one of the main vehicles for accomplishing this Lee Atwater/Karl Rove/Roger Ailes Psy-ops strategy. Buy the book from Amazon Raising Kane Review "Dr. Bryant is an excellent writer - clear, logical, authoritative, compelling - and I'm confident that this book and its important subject material will grab your attention and keep you turning the pages." Advance Praise for State of Confusion Laurence H. Tribe, Carl M. Loeb University Professor, Harvard Law School "Bryant Welch was born to write this vitally important and highly readable investigation of how a cadre of ethically challenged political operatives and their religious and journalistic allies have gradually distorted and disabled the minds of ordinary Americans-and have all but crippled the once- extraordinary mind of America. It is not too late for us to reclaim our identity, but we will succeed only if we take to heart the lessons so lucidly laid bare by the remarkable work of this insightful psychologist and experienced political activist." Nancy McWilliams, Ph.D., president of the Division of Psychoanalysis, American Psychological Association, and professor, Rutgers Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology "Dr. Welch is a master of making complex psychological concepts understandable and using them to explain the disturbing political climate of our time. This beautifully written, urgently relevant work should be on the bookshelf of everyone who cares about the survival of American democracy." Robert Shrum, senior strategist of the Gore and Kerry presidential campaigns and author of No Excuses: Concessions of a Serial Campaigner "Bryant Welch makes a fascinating and compelling case that right-wing politics has subverted our democracy by infecting us with a form of national political neurosis. This book unmasks the politics of fear---the deeper chords touched by campaigns that appeal to the dark side." To become more familiar with Dr. Welch's writings, please visit his regular blog at the Huffington Post. Bryant Welch's Blog http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bryant-welch/ Book Description Finally, the answer to the many questions that have been preying on the minds of millions of Americans has arrived. Why are Americans so vulnerable to divisive political tactics? Why did Americans get dragged into such an unwise war in Iraq? Why do fundamentalist religious groups, Fox News, and right- wing radio still play such influential roles in America's political landscape? And why are long-accepted rational scientific ideas like evolution under siege? These questions hold.... psybc@psybc.com phone: 973.744.6007 web: http://www.psybc.com  [ send green star]

Help Protect Our Elderly July 29, 2008 7:06 PM

Help Protect Our Elderly July 29, 2008 Dear james m, We trust nursing homes to make sure our loved ones are in a safe environment where they eat their meals on time, receive their prescribed medications, and have attentive care. Sadly, many nursing home residents are neglected. Mary Hight was dehydrated and ill for days, but her nursing home wouldn't call an ambulance. Her daughter had no choice but to push her in a wheelchair to a nearby hospital, where she died the next day. Adding insult to injury, Mary's family couldn't sue the nursing home and hold it accountable in court -- because it had put something called a "binding mandatory arbitration" clause in the fine print of its admission papers. Instead of focusing on how to provide the best care to their residents, nursing homes are working to make themselves immune from accountability when they are careless. Right now, Congress is considering legislation to stop nursing homes from stripping the elderly of the right to go to court, but the nursing homes are fighting hard against it! Help stop this predatory practice! http://action.citizen.org/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=25274 Congress may be acting as soon as TOMORROW on key legislation to stop nursing homes from shutting the elderly and their families out of court. Take action now to hold nursing homes accountable! State of Confusion: Pol Manipulation + Assault on Amer Mind July 25, 2008 3:44 PM

State of Confusion: Pol Manipulation + Assault on Amer Mind State of Confusion: Political Manipulation and the Assault on the American Mind - Reactions to the New Book by Dr. Bryant Welch Dear Colleagues, A few weeks ago we advised you of the fascinating new book by Dr. Bryant Welch entitled State of Confusion: Political Manipulation and the Assault on the American Mind. We thought you should see the reactions from some of those who have read this wonderful book to date. Buy the book from Amazon Advance Praise for State of Confusion Laurence H. This book unmasks the politics of fear---the deeper chords touched by campaigns that appeal to the dark side." Buy the book from Amazon Responses to our recent mailing announcing the publication of State of Confusion It is brilliant -- what a wonderful application of psychology to politics with a trumpet call to Americans to be more reflective and thoughtful to protect themselves and the future of the country! Bryant Welch's emphasis on the need to face the true complexity of our millennium reality is imperative for psychotherapists, politicians, and voters alike. Todd Walker, Psy.D. Cincinnati, Ohio All I can say is "Bravo!" - While reading State of Confusion I remembered that when I decided to major in psychology (during the Nixon Administration, the Vietnam War, political assassinations) I wanted viable answers to why our nation was so crazy. Forty years later I had all but given up hope that psychology could be of much help countering the formidable power of self-serving politicos and marketers. Reading Bryant Welch's book rekindled my optimism. Robert Welker, Ph.D. Milwaukee "Dr. Bryant Welch's book, State Of Confusion is one of the most important books I have read in the last ten years. Dr. Welch explains the public relations charade he calls gaslighting that is making us as a nation crazy and leads citizens to begin to doubt their own minds." David G. Markham, L.C.S.W. New York Bryant Welch's unique analysis reveals the underlying unconscious "battleground states" of mind that have been so successfully exploited by political and corporate interests. Scary, compelling and ultimately hopeful, this book points the way to reclaiming our ability to adapt, to think critically and to move forward as a nation on a well-reasoned and logical course. Lisa K. Weiss, Ph.D. New York Bryant Welch submits his comprehensive knowledge (both broad and deep) of global and domestic conflicts to an incisive psychological analysis so that we may understand the oft-times puzzling actions of our leaders and our country. No matter your political persuasion, this is a book for everyone to read - you will have more substance to your arguments with Welch's analysis behind them! Andrea Celenza, Ph.D. Boston, Mass. Buy the book from Amazon Book Description Finally, the answer to the many questions that have been preying on the minds of millions of Americans has arrived. Why are Americans so vulnerable to divisive political tactics? Why did Americans get dragged into such an unwise war in Iraq? Why do fundamentalist religious groups, Fox News, and right- wing radio still play such influential roles in America's political landscape? And why are long- accepted rational scientific ideas like evolution under siege? These questions hold America's future in the balance. Ultimately, they are questions about the American mind. Psychologist-attorney Dr. Bryant Welch has the answers. If America is going to change the mind-set that led us to war in Iraq and left us unable to confront our serious national problems, this book is vitally important. Drawing on his unique experience both as a clinical psychologist and a Washington, D.C., political figure with the American Psychological Association, Dr. Welch shows how the long-term effects of sophisticated new forms of political manipulation have not only led to our debacle in Iraq but are also currently undercutting America's ability to address its very serious problems. In the 1944 movie Gaslight, a husband drives his wife to the brink of insanity by playing games with her sense of reality. Just as in the movie, America's most recent political "gaslighters," such as George W. Bush, Karl Rove, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and many religious leaders, have generated and exploited confusion in the minds of countless Americans. Gaslighters prey on their victim's vulnerability to paranoia, sexual perplexity, and envy to  [ send green star]

Senator Probes Amer Psych Assoc Drug $- Pharmalot + NYT July 15, 2008 3:46 PM

U.S. Senator Probes American Psych Assoc. Drug $ - Pharmalot and NY Times Comments can be made here: http://tinyurl.com/68b6vk PharmalotGrassley Probes Psychiatrists Over Ties To PharmaBy Ed SilvermanJuly 11th, 2008The investigation by the Senate Finance Committee, where Chuck Grassley is the ranking Republican, into the ties between drugmakers and medicine is expanding. After targeting grants issued to academic psychiatrists, Grassley now wants the American Psychiatric Association to open its books for a look-see at pharma funding. Psychiatrists, of course, prescribe antidepressants and antipsychotics, both of which have stirred controversy. And psychiatrists have frequently shown up at the top of lists of doctors receiving pharma money. This week, for instance, Vermont's Attorney General released its annual report showing that, of the top 100 recipients, psychiatrists received the highest level of payments, and 11 psychiatrists received a total of about $626,000, or approximately 20 percent of the total value of payments. The average amount received by psychiatrists was nearly $57,000. Not coincidentally, the Senate committee's conflicts-of-interest probe into oversight of grants issued by drugmakers and the NIH has focused on three psychiatrists - Harvard University's Joe Biederman, Stanford University's Alan Schatzberg and the University of Cincinnati's Melissa DelBello. The following e-mail was sent to APA members. Date: 07/11/2008 11:07AM Subject: Message from APA Leadership Fellow Members of the APA: The APA Office has just received a letter from Senator Grassley of Iowa, requesting a complete accounting of APA revenues, except those from advertising in our journals, from pharmaceutical companies, starting in 2003. We will, of course, provide this information, which had already been available to our members. These monies have supported activities including symposia, program bags, buses, and exhibits at our annual meetings and research and leadership training for outstanding residents. Our compliance with the rules governing these revenues has earned us accolades from the accrediting agency. We are not alone; recent public focus on relationships between medicine and the pharmaceutical industry is a challenge for the whole field of medicine. The APA fully endorses the concept of transparency in our relationships with pharma and other entities and has been in the forefront of the disclosure process. In March, 2008, long before this inquiry from Senator Grassley, your Board of Trustees empaneled a working group charged to review all APA pharmaceutical revenues, sort them into categories; and provide the Board with options for ending pharmaceutical support in each category and the implications for the activities they currently fund. We are proud of what we do. We will continue to keep you informed aout this and all matters of importance to members of the APA. UPDATE: The New York Times now has a story about this in its Saturday paper. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- Letters: letters@nytimes.com New York Times Psychiatric Group Faces Scrutiny Over Drug Industry Ties By BENEDICT CAREY and GARDINER HARRIS July 12, 2008 It seemed an ideal marriage, a scientific partnership that would attack mental illness from all sides. Psychiatrists would bring to the union their expertise and clinical experience, drug makers would provide their products and the money to run rigorous studies, and patients would get better medications, faster. Senator Charles E. Grassley, right, Republican of Iowa, is demanding that the American Psychiatric Association give an accounting of its financing from the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Alan F. Schatzberg, president-elect of the American Psychiatric Association. But now the profession itself is under attack in Congress, accused of allowing this relationship to become too cozy. After a series of stinging investigations of individual doctors' arrangements with drug makers, Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa, is demanding that the American Psychiatric Association, the field's premier professional organization, give an accounting of its financing. The association is the voice of establishment psychiatry, publishing the field's major journals and its standard diagnostic manual. "I have come to understand that money from the pharmaceutical industry can shape the practices of nonprofit organizations that purport to be independent in their viewpoints and actions," Mr. Grassley said Thursday in a letter to the association. In 2006, the latest year for which numbers are available, the drug industry accounted for about 30 percent of the association's $62.5 million in financing. About half of that money went to drug advertisements in psychiatric journals and exhibits at the annual meeting, and the other half to sponsor fellowships, conferences and industry symposiums at the annual meeting. This weekend in Chicago, the psychiatry association's board will meet behind closed doors, in part to discuss how to respond to the increasingly intense scrutiny and questions about conflicts of interest. "With every new revelation, our credibility with patients has been damaged, and we have to protect that first and foremost," said Dr. Steven S. Sharfstein, a former president of the association and now president of the Sheppard Pratt Health System in Baltimore. "I think we need to review all arrangements between doctors and industry and be very clear about what constitutes a conflict of interest and what does not." One of the doctors named by Mr. Grassley is the association's president-elect, Dr. Alan F. Schatzberg of Stanford, whose $4.8 million stock holdings in a drug development company raised the senator's concern.  [ send green star]

WITNESS Acts: Video in Act: Human Rights Activists Share; etc.. July 06, 2008 7:00 AM

Video in Action: Human Rights Activists Share their Victories Dear James, In just a few weeks, 32 human rights activists from 29 countries will come together to participate in our second annual Video Advocacy Institute (VAI), a two-week intensive training in our methodology of using video to create change. This year, attendees are working on a range of issues that impact millions of people around the world including female mutilation, disability rights, and environmental justice. http://www.witness.org/index.php? option=com_content&task=view&id=881&Itemid=245 Your support now will help to provide additional resources for equipment, editing, translation services, distribution and communications tools on an ongoing basis to ensure the voices of these dedicated and passionate activists are heard by key decision makers and the global human rights community. Even $5 goes a long way. Please donate! How VAI Tipped the Balance: Victory for 2007 VAI Alumni Read about these amazing victories reported to us from participants in our first VAI last year. - In Peru, following the screening of Violencia Rosa, a film about violence against women, lawmakers approved the Regional Plan for Action to Stop Violence Against Women (2007-2012). - In Hungary, the release of footage of public debates helped move the UN Office on Drugs and Crime to revisit its current drug policy. - In Liberia, a TV screening of a film about sexual abuse of girls in schools brought national attention to the issue. Read about what these activists have to say about VAI. Support VAI to Help Create Further Success in the Fight for Human Rights Many applicants to the VAI have limited resources, so when video seems integral to furthering their cause we offer both full and partial fellowships to enable the most diverse applicants from around the world to attend the program. The cost of a full fellowship is $5,000. That's 500 of you giving $10. Or 250 of you giving $20. Or 100 of you giving $50. Imagine it. The impact of the VAI also reaches far beyond the participants themselves. Through the work of former alumni, we are building a series of case studies to share with the wider human rights community to promote the broader use of video and technology in social justice advocacy. Please help make this year's VAI an even bigger success. Sincerely, All of us at WITNESS Video Workshop in Chang Mai, Thailand Dear James, In September, WITNESS will be participating in a Video Advocacy Workshop for Asian activists challenging forced eviction and other human rights abuses in the name of development. psychrights.org: Important Alaska Supreme Court Stay Order May 26, 2008 12:46 PM

Important Alaska Supreme Court Stay Order Hi Everyone, You may know that PsychRights has been battling with the Alaska Psychiatric Institute (API) over its forced drugging of Mr. Bill Bigley since December of 2006. An out of date narrative is at http://psychrights.org/States/Alaska/CaseSeven.htm. To summarize, API has been drugging him against his will since 1980 in at least 75 admissions. Until last week, the hospital never got to a forced drugging hearing when PsychRights was representing him. In last week's trial, through the tremendous written testimony of Robert Whitaker, Ron Bassman, Sarah Porter, and even Loren Mosher of blessed memory, and through the written and live testimony of Dr. Grace Jackson, we put on what I think is fair to say a compelling case against the forced use of these drugs in general, and Risperdal Consta in particular, which was the drug the hospital intended to inject into Mr. Bigley against his wishes. There was unrebutted evidence about the tremendous harm the drugging causes, including brain damage, as well as the physical harm, and how they prevent people from recovering. The hospital's response was basically "that's what we do." In other words, "that's the standard of care." On Monday, the trial court ruled against us and in response to our motion for a stay pending appeal, gave us just 48 hours to get a stay from the Alaska Supreme Court. What a stay means is that the order allowing the forced drugging is put on hold and the hospital can't act on it. We filed an Emergency Motion for Stay Pending Appeal on May 20th and API asked for and was given more time to respond on the condition they not drug Mr. Bigley in the interim. Today after considering our motion and API's opposition, the Alaska Supreme Court granted our Emergency Motion for Stay Pending Appeal. I am writing because I think this Order from the Alaska Supreme Court is potentially very important in potentially forcing the hospital to use means other than forced drugging. It is also very important in establishing the right to prevent forced drugging during the pendency of an appeal when a trial court orders that the forced drugging is allowed. As we know, especially for people who haven't been on these drugs for a long period of time, just allowing them to avoid the drugs for such a period of time can be crucial in allowing them to get through a bout of psychosis and recover. The whole set of documents, including transcripts are available at http://psychrights.org/States/Alaska/CaseSeven.htm#08-00493 -- James B. (Jim) Gottstein, Esq. Call for Proposals: 2008 Mental Health America Annual Conference December 30, 2007 8:51 AM

Mental Health America welcomes proposals for poster and breakout sessions to be presented at the 2008 Mental Health America Annual Conference, including the inaugural National Mental Health Promotion and Prevention Summit to be held June 4-7, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. Presenters will have a chance to share their knowledge with hundreds of mental health advocates, consumers, practitioners, policymakers and the volunteer and executive leaders of Mental Health America's 320 affiliate offices. Submissions are due to Mental Health America no later than January 15, 2008. Please see www.mentalhealthamerica.net/go/conference/ for conference and submission details. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is the National Mental Health Promotion and Prevention Summit? The United States has the highest prevalence rates (26 percent) of mental illnesses, according to a comparison of 14 developing and developed countries (JAMA, 2004). Although approximately 80 percent of all Americans who have a mental health disorder eventually receive some form of treatment, the median delay across all disorders is nearly a decade and less than one-third of people who seek help receive minimally adequate care (NCS-R, 2005). People with serious mental illnesses served in the public system are dying 25 years early, on average, from a full range of preventable health problems such as heart disease and diabetes. (NASMHPD, 2006). Each year, roughly 30,000 Americans take their lives, while hundreds of thousands make suicide attempts (CDC, 2007). This inaugural Summit will be a unique opportunity for people and organizations that are committed to advancing a prevention and promotion agenda to drive down the tragically high rates and profound impact of mental illnesses in the United States. The goals of the Summit are threefold: Articulate the current state of the science in mental health promotion and prevention. Share successes and challenges in the implementation of research-based programs and interventions. Connect researchers and state and local advocates to build a movement for the advancement of promotion and prevention in public awareness, practice and policy. The Summit is timed to prepare the behavioral health field and allied individuals for the anticipated release of the Institute of Medicine's report "Prevention of Mental Disorders and Substance Abuse among Children, Youth, and Young Adults: Research Advances and Promising Interventions." The Summit will feature talks by renowned national and international experts, breakouts on cuttingedge research and community success stories and plenty of networking opportunities. Submit Your Proposal Today! (pdf) Questions? Contact Danielle Fritze, Project Manager, Public Affairs, Mental Health America at 703-797-2591.  [ send green star]

Other information currently available follows. =========================================== Keynotes: Transformational Spirituality Leonard Roy Frank Leonard Roy Frank, electroshock and insulin shock survivor and long-time activist. Leonard has edited and contributed to books which include: The History of Shock Treatment, Influencing Minds, and Random House Webster's Quotationary. The above is what Leonard submitted, but it doesn't begin to properly credit him. Leonard is a giant in the movement and a personal hero of mine. So, in looking around for more to say about him, I found the following in Toxic Psychiatry, by Dr. Peter Breggin (1994): Leonard Frank also has debated shock doctors at their meetings and has written The History of Shock Treatment (1978) as well as the recently published comprehensive critique of ECT, Electroshock: Death, Brain Damage, Memory Loss, and Brainwashing. He was a founder of the national patients rights movement and remains a heartening example to hundreds of survivors. Shock advocates frequently suggest that the eloquence of survivors like Leonard Frank is evidence that shock is not permanently damaging. I have known Leonard, and several other eloquent survivors, for almost twenty years, and I can vouch for the struggles they have undergone to recover as much as possible from the damage. These individuals are living proof of the capacity of the human being to triumph over brain damage and dysfunction. It seems cruel and self-serving for shock promoters to deny both their suffering and their heroic efforts to live life to the fullest despite their iatrogenic [caused by the doctor] handicaps. In his book The History of Shock Treatment (1978) shock survivor Leonard Frank made probably the first public disclosure of the work of D. Ewen Cameron of Canada, who assaulted patients with massive drug doses, bizarre forms of conditioning and what he called depatterning treatment. . . . Cameron was one of the most revered and rewarded psychiatrists on the international scene. . . Around the time of Frank's disclosures about Cameron's treatments, Cameron's work suddenly became a major scandal. Journey Toward Freedom: Rights and Empowerment Can Truong Can Truong is a psychiatric survivor who experienced coerced treatment who, through participating in the consumer movement, is able to be in recovery and become whole again as a person. First diagnoed with depression and bipolar disorder in college, he was forced to leave school in 1993. Over a 12-year period, Can was hospitalzied six times, tried more than 20 different medications, entered several clinical drug trials, and underwent 15 electroconvulsive shock treatments. Through it also, Can became a mental health recovery advocate -- one of the few Asian Americans in the country to do so. In 2005, he represented the U.S. recovery movement at the World Federation for Mental Health Congress in Cairo, Egypt. Currently, he is a recovery, wellness and empowerment educator, advocate, trainer, speaker and consultant. He is the founder and director of the Center for Education Empowerment where he does advocacy, training and consultation to individuals and organizations on recovery: to live, to learn and to work. to work. http://narpa.org/ jim.gottstein@psychrights.org  [ send green star]

Human Rights Campaign: Victory this month depends on you September 15, 2007 6:03 PM

Victory this month depends on you We've got two weeks until an ENDA vote. The radical right is just getting warmed up. Write to Congress before the House votes. http://www.hrcactioncenter.org/campaign/enda_house/77bseir08i5kmn? Video: Michael's story of workplace discrimination. When I sent an email in August asking people to help us pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), 40,000 of your fellow HRC supporters took action – but many did not. I asked myself why. Maybe we didn't make it clear enough what's at stake here? Without ENDA, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans simply don't have the protection of the law or access to the "equal opportunity" this nation was founded upon. And maybe I didn't make it clear that the radical right is out in force on this issue? Here's a choice quote from a fact sheet distributed on Capitol Hill last week by the Traditional Values Coalition: "ENDA will force businesses with 15 or more employees to bow to the demands of homosexuals, cross-dressers, drag queens, transsexuals and she-males." We need to bombard Congress with the kind of pressure they're used to receiving from the radical right. This bill is likely to come up for a vote within two weeks. Rep. Moran has still NOT pledged to support ENDA! Send a message to Rep. Moran today – help us win ENDA, and build momentum for future victories. Remember – our opponents can rally tens of thousands of extremists with one bogus statement like the one above. I'm hoping you'll be more motivated by the plain truth. Take Michael's story, for example. Years of hiding his sexual orientation as a gay police officer in Massachusetts, while daily risking his life to protect his community, took its toll on Michael. After falling into drinking and depression, Michael left the police force. He was finally able to get help, and he reapplied to the force, this time as an openly gay man. But unlike four other former officers who also sought reinstatement, only Michael was refused. Luckily, Michael was covered under Massachusetts' anti-discrimination laws. ENDA would protect against discrimination like this wherever it occurs. For the first time in 12 years, we're poised to make a major advancement for GLBT rights. If you've never taken action before, this is your moment to show your commitment to the GLBT community in this country. There's no time to waste - click here to send a message to Congress today. http://www.hrc.org/ You know as well as I do how hard we've fought for every ounce of dignity we've gained over the years. And you know that in every aspect of life – the workplace, the street, the hospital, the military – we're still a long way from being able to take our basic rights for granted. ENDA is a major step. Please join our campaign. Warmly, Joe Solmonese President Having trouble clicking on the links above? Pat Roberts Topic: Coldwater Town Hall Meeting When: 08/15/2007 Starts: 04:15 PM Where: Comanche County Courthouse, Commissioner's Room, 1st Floor, 201 South New York, Coldwater, KS URL: http://www.wibw.com/home/headlines/8855882.html While the House of Representatives just passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (H.R. 2831), the Senate companion bill, the Fair Pay Restoration Act (S. 1843), currently only has 20 cosponsors. Like its House counterpart, the Fair Pay Restoration Act clarifies that each discriminatory paycheck is in fact another act of discrimination and, in doing so, restores the law to how it was previously applied and ensures that victims of pay discrimination can have their day in court. AAUW also strongly supports the Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 766/H.R. 1338), which would expand upon the original scope of the Equal Pay Act of 1963 by closing loop holes and improving the law's effectiveness. While this bill is cosponsored by a majority of the representatives in the House (225), it only has 22 cosponsors in the Senate. See if your senator is a cosponsor of the Fair Pay Restoration Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act. When you attend the town hall meeting, it would be helpful if you could ask a question on pay equity. Here is an example you could use verbatim: “New research released in April 2007 by the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation shows that just one year out of college, women working full time already earn less than their male colleagues, even when they work in the same field. Ten years after graduation, the pay gap widens. Wage inequalities are not simply a result of women’s qualifications or choices. Wage discrimination persists despite women’s increased educational attainment, greater level of experience in the workforce, and decreased amount of time spent out of the workforce raising children. Will you support the Fair Pay Restoration Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act (and, if they are a sponsor, add “and push for action on these bills”)?” For more information on the Fair Pay Restoration Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act, see the AAUW Capitol Hill Lobby Corps briefings online (AAUW members only) and the AAUW Action Network online. After you attend a town hall meeting we’d like your feedback. Please go to http://www.capwiz.com/aauw/lrm/feedback.tt and fill out the feedback form. Washington Update is AAUW's free, members-only weekly e-bulletin. It offers an insider's view on the legislative process, the latest policy news, resources for advocates, programming ideas, and updates from the Public Policy and Government Relations Department. disability rights organization and NDRN's suggestion that our "Wanted" poster might incite violence is totally offensive. ADAPT demands that NDRN publicly apologize for this irresponsible allusion that we are inciting violence. Yes we are holding Secretary Jackson accountable for the lack of accessible, affordable, integrated housing in this country however the "Wanted" campaign is to get a meeting not to incite violence. Highly paid professionals may not like ADAPT's "guerilla theater" but to make the suggestion that free speech posters incite violence is outrageous. After a decade of working together NDRN's slur is particularly offensive. Again we demand a written apology from the NDRN BOD and you as Executive Directer. For an Institution and Barrier Free America, The ADAPT Community www.adapt.org ----- Original Message ----- From: Kathy McGinley To: Bob Kafka Sent: Tuesday, April 11, 2006 11:20 AM Subject: FW: NDRN and ADAPT Access Across America I had the wrong address the first time I sent this to you. We made the decision to send out the message below to our network. We believe that the effort is extremely worthwhile - but have major concerns about the "wanted poster". Just wanted you to know and not only find out through the grape vine. --------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Kathy McGinley Sent: Tuesday, April 11, 2006 11:15 AM To: napas_ceo@yahoogroups.com Subject: NDRN and ADAPT Access Across America This message is FYI. ADAPT is beginning a national campaign entitled Access Across America. An explanation of the effort is included below. This is a worthwhile effort to address a major nationwide problem. However, NDRN has several concerns about the campaign that we believe are important to share. The first is that it appears targeted almost exclusively at people in nursing homes or faced with the danger of a nursing home (see statement included below). There are individuals with a range of physical and mental disabilities in other institutional settings/or facing the threat of other institutional settings - the problem is much broader than nursing homes. Other institutional settings are not mentioned until the section on who would be eligible for their proposed program. It would be good if the focus could be broadened across the board. The second is the "wanted poster" that people are being asked to distribute (also included below). There is a concern that this unintentionally could incite threats or harm to the Secretary. If the intended audience is distracted by the tactics used to promote the message, the message itself may not be heard. ACCESSIBLE, AFFORDABLE INTEGRATED HOUSING ACCESS ACROSS AMERICA (AAA) SCOPE OF PROBLEM Even with the increased availability of Medicaid community-based services and supports, people with disabilities are being stopped from relocating to housing in the community because they cannot get access to vouchers or accessible, affordable, and integrated housing options. This affects all disabled people who have gone into nursing homes and due to Katrina the situation has worsened. There are thousands of disabled and elderly people who were waiting to get out before Katrina and continue to wait. Many people have dropped out of transitioning programs, losing hope when they could not get any assistance to coordinate their Medicaid community-based services and supports with any real access to affordable, accessible, integrated housing. WHAT IS ACCESS ACROSS AMERICA? Access Across America is a proposal to HUD for a national program that would help people coming out of nursing homes or at risk of going into a nursing homes because they cannot access affordable, safe, and accessible housing. This program coordinates the receipt of subsidized housing vouchers with Medicaid-eligible persons transitioning out of nursing homes or at risk of going into a nursing home due to a housing crisis, who are receiving home and community-based services and supports. WHY ACCESS ACROSS AMERICA? Directs HUD and HHS/CMS to collaborate, coordinate and improve services to low income persons with disabilities, thus ensuring that they can truly live in the most integrated setting. C Improve the timing and coordination of affordable, accessible, integrated housing with the receipt of home and community support services; C To facilitate the rebalancing of the long term care system; C Implement the goals of the New Freedom Initiative; C Assist states in implementing the Supreme Court's Olmstead decision. WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR ACCESS ACROSS AMERICA? C Individuals with disabilities and older Americans who are in nursing homes or other institutions; C Those who have chosen to leave the nursing home or other institution; C Individuals who will be transitioning from the nursing home or other institution within the next 60 days or may be forced back into a nursing home over a housing problem. C Individuals at imminent risk of going into nursing homes or other institutions HOW WILL ACCESS ACROSS AMERICA BE IMPLEMENTED? HUD in coordination with HHS/CMS will work at the state level and local levels with federally authorized community-based organizations such as Independent Living Centers and Area Agencies on Aging, to facilitate the coordination of and implementation of the ACCESS ACROSS AMERICA program. It is for people in nursing home and OTHER INSTITUTIONS. ADAPT different then many DC groups believes that the identity politics and silo funding has harmed the delivery of disability services in this country and pit disability groups against each other. Tell Repr: Say "No" to a Hse Budget that Sacrifices Vital Servs to Pay / Tax April 13, 2006 12:46 AM

Tell Your Representative to Say "No" to a House Budget that Sacrifices Vital Services to Pay for More Tax Cuts -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The House Budget Committee released their budget resolution yesterday. It would force cuts in vital services funded by appropriations (other than defense and homeland security) and $6.8 billion in cuts to mandatory programs over five years under the protection of reconciliation. At the same time, the House resolution calls for $228 billion in additional, unpaid-for tax cuts over the next five years. The full House is expected to vote on the resolution next week. Call your Representative TODAY and tell him or her that they must oppose a budget that once again sacrifices critical priorities like education, health care, nutrition, and child care to pay for tax breaks aimed at the wealthy few. Over two dozen House moderates have objected to a budget that cuts vital services, but they will be under serious pressure from Republican leaders to support the budget. They need to hear from constituents that they must oppose these unbalanced priorities. With your help, this budget can be stopped! Starting TODAY, use this toll-free number to be connected to your U.S. Representative: (800) 459-1887. This toll-free number will be available until the House votes. If you have trouble getting through, find your Representative's D.C. office number here. Thanks to the American Friends Service Committee and other groups that contributed to the 800 number. http://capwiz.com/nwlc/home/ BACKGROUND The House budget resolution provides $9 billion less in funding in FY 2007 for domestic discretionary programs than is needed just to maintain current services. As you know, this will undoubtedly lead to service cuts in domestic discretionary programs such as education, Head Start, child care, job training, and many health programs. In addition, the House budget resolution calls for billions in cuts to mandatory programs, much of which could come from cuts to critical supports for low-income families, such as Title XX Social Services, the Earned Income Credit, and Supplemental Security Income. At the same time, the House budget proposes $228 billion in additional tax cuts that disproportionately benefit the very rich, all while increasing federal deficits by $256 billion over the next five years (as compared to what deficits would be without these policy changes). Rep. Castle (R-DE) and other House moderates are expected to offer a proposal to restore some funding for domestic discretionary programs. While the cuts in the budget might be slightly less harsh if this effort is successful, it will not make up for the overall unbalanced nature of this budget, which shortchanges vital services to help finance more tax cuts. Congratulations to all Health Care Without Harm partners and members for your participation in the Campaign for Environmentally Responsible Health Care, and for being innovative social entrepreneurs who are making positive change in the world. Stacy FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 15 Contact: Stacy Malkan, Communications Director; 510-848-5343, ext. 105; smalkan@hcwh.org Gary Cohen, Co-Executive Director; 617-524-6018; gcohen@igc.org HEALTH CARE WITHOUT HARM WINS PRESTIGIOUS SKOLL FOUNDATION AWARD $765,000 award to support global expansion of environmentally responsible health care Boston, Mass. -- Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) today announced it is the recipient of a $765,000, three-year award from the Skoll Foundation, an honor given to leaders of organizations that use the most innovative and effective approaches to making social change. Gary Cohen, co-executive director of HCWH and resident of Jamaica Plain, Mass., was honored by the foundation as a social entrepreneur. "Health Care Without Harm and Gary Cohen reflect the essence of a Skoll social entrepreneur: practical innovators who resolve social problems and build civil society's infrastructure and effectiveness," said Sally Osberg, President and CEO of the Skoll Foundation. "Health Care Without Harm represents an incredibly powerful force for systemic social change." HCWH is an international coalition working to reduce pollution in the health care industry, and has been instrumental in closing medical waste incinerators, reducing dioxin pollution, removing mercury products from health care, and shifting health-care purchasing dollars toward safer, less-toxic materials. The coalition, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, has built a growing environmental health movement in the health care industry (see accomplishments). "Health Care Without Harm's goal is to ensure that healthcare professionals worldwide understand the links between toxic chemicals and human health, and become leaders in their hospitals -- and in society - in creating a toxic-free future," said Cohen, a co-founder of HCWH. "Imagine if doctors and nurses around the world joined the race for prevention, rather than just the race for the cure." HCWH will use the Skoll money for a global campaign to replace mercury-containing medical devices with safe alternatives, and to expand HCWH programs in Europe, South America and Asia. The grant is one of 16 Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship announced this week, chosen from 430 applicants from around the world. The Skoll Foundation was created by eBay's first president, Jeff Skoll, to promote his vision for a more peaceful and prosperous world. Dear Sandra,Good Day.  Thanx for posting and responding, they are great!  Yet, this post could have easily went under one of the general threads like: Advocacy, press releases, etc..  The reason why I mention this is because, if we post posts with similar content under those general threads we won't have a thousand separate threads, which is so much harder to peruse.  I hope you and yours are well and will continue to be.  You're making this group what it can be.  My groups :)   VotingforNader · Voting for Nader       Homepage :)http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VotingforNader/Subscribe :) VotingforNader-subscribe@yahoogroups.comDisabled Greens News and discussion, Group home page :)http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DisabledGreensNews/ ,Abuse in Therapy, Group homepage :)http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/AbuseinTherapy/Diffabled, Mental Health, all related issues, advocacy, and professionals:Invite link: http://passport.care2.net/invite.html?g=880      Homepage:http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/Diffabled_MentalHealth_Action"Painting is poetry which is seen and not heard, and poetry is a paintingwhich is heard but not seen." ~ Leonardo da Vinci Goodbye.
