Announcing the Grand Bonobo Petition-athon!!!!! June 30, 2006 5:00 PM
NEW - The Grand Bonobo PETITION-ATHON!!!!!!
Up to 80 Bonobos are killed every week and there's only a few thousand left!
It is critical that the plight of the Bonobo is drawn to the attention
of the wider public and we believe our petition, back with media
targetting can achieve this.
For the week commencing 1st of July 2006 we are asking all group
members wo sign the Save Bonobo petition. We aim to get our petition to
10,000 as quickly as possible.
Pan Paniscus Management Team are also going to pull their weight and we
have each agreed send our 1,000 Friends of Friends requests via Network
Messaging, we find a polite note to be highly effective.
Please take this call to action seriously! We cannot wait until Bonobo are down to hundreds until the alert is finaly heard.
Here is a sample request:
Please help me save Pigmy Apes
Dear friend,
There is an animal catasrophe happening in the Congo thanks to man's greed for precious metals and ores.
It is looking very likely that Bonobo Apes (pigmy chimpanzees) will be
extinct within just a few years (95% population drop in two decades)
I am a member of Pan Pansicus, a group set up to raise awareness of the
plight of the Bonobo Apes in the hope that urgent action can be taken.
What can we still make? Dear George.... The German armed forces are soon in Congo. She should protect the elections. They should protect rather the chimpanzees. This would be a sensibly task. Greetings Morris

At the beginning of July the application starts. More than 500 soldiers fly off on the 10th July. An Ahead troop is on site. All together 1500 soldiers are used. 780 from Germany, the other from France.
1500 soldiers for a country of 40million, 70% of which has been described as the "worlds worst" humantarian disaster - a warzone.
These troops can verify that the elections were unfair, or they can give the impression that they were fair, what they cannot do is enforce fairness onto elections that would otherwise be unfair.

The troops are meant only for the application in the capital of Kinshasa. All other would best of all fine too dangerously. What I find as very doubtful, is the fact that from Congo and other African countries meat of monkeys gets to Europe. Especially to England. For the Africans living there. The EU is not to be stopped in the position this.

Went to check and actually recognised quite a few names - I was doing the 'Bs' today - don't ask me why I just decided to start fof from B - maybe because the last time I did A and never got to the end

Thanks for responding George, but i dont get it why arent people signing ? i mean all these e-mails petitions we have been forwarding to our friends and fof its not many is it to say we need 10,000 at least , well i hope it picks up again and people wake up and smell the coffee, it really annoys me i mean its two seconds of someone's time. Well all we can do it try and say we give it our all.Hugs Tara.
This is a very new campaign and its one that few people have heard of, many do not even know of the Bonobo's existence and I suspect many delete petitions on subjects they don't recognise.
This is why our efforts are so important. Asking people to sign petitions is all part of spreading the word, even if this time it does not result in the huge response we know the issue deserves, every one extra person that signs is likely to look into the matter further and tell their friends about it.
It is also the reason why it is critical far us to push extremely hard to widen the overall level of knowledge about the issue.
We are obviously doing that with our press releases (some press coverage expected soon) but there's a lot group members could do - posting news of the issue as shares, adding links to savebonobo.org on any website they can (including groups that have links sections) all add to the overall level of awareness.
The new press article I mentioned will have a quote from a very significant great apes campaigner, she says she expects the Bonobo to be one of the first apes to go extinct!
I also think we need more people to take an active role in Pan Paniscus management this is much than yet another online group to join, sign the petition then forget about it - we are to a great extent the vanguard for the movement to protect the Bonobo, we MUST build up critical mass for this campaign and that can come from real effort by individuals.
The world has shirked its responsibility to the Bonobo for too long, we must change that and we have precious little time.
