Stop U.S.Fish and Wildlife From Letting Big Oil Harm Polar Bears
4 years ago
Despite listing polar bears under the Endangered Species Act because their sea-ice habitat is melting underneath them, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is now proposing regulations that will allow oil companies to harm and harass struggling polar bears for the next five years. The sea-ice-dependent Pacific walrus, a candidate for Endangered Species Act listing because of climate change, is equally at risk from the agency's ill-conceived permits. The Service has determined that proposed oil and gas activities in the Beaufort Sea are acceptable under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. However, the Service bases this determination on old information that does not take into account changing Arctic conditions and downplays the very real possibility of an exploration-well blowout in the icy Arctic Ocean, which would be impossible to clean up. The last thing besieged polar bears and walruses need is dirty industrial oil and gas development as they attempt to survive in a melting world. Please tell the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service not to permit Big Oil to harm struggling polar bears and walruses. Send a letter today.
