anonymous I've invited some friends... October 10, 2006 11:37 AM

I know the goal is to sit in silence but...let's get a little conversation going! Who are you? Do you meditate? How? Why? When? I look forward to hearing from you!  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]

Hi guys,

I'm Theresa. I used to practice zazen on a regular (at least three times a week or so) basis, yet I've fallen out of the loop, and it's been months!

I just got a new job (bringing me up the three jobs). I hope to quit one, once the new one becomes full time, and keep my other part time job. Plus I'm in a band. We just recorded our first demo, and we have our first show on Friday, so band practice has kept me pretty busy. Even though I am busy (and slightly stressed), I need to jump back into meditating. I'm sure it'll help.

I used to practice in the spare bedroom in my house. The floor is hardwood, and I'd use a pillow and a blanket, but now I have a roomate. I need to find a spot where I won't be distracted and where my kittens can't bug me!

I noticed an invitation to ZEN,from a Buddhism forum.Thank you. I usually ZEN around 9:30am for approximately half an hour to one hour.  Sometimes if I feel unusually stressed,I'll try another ZEN later in the afternoon, around 5:00pm.  Most of the time,I breathe when I prepare for cooking, gardening, and housework. Most of the time I do "no-thinking." meditation. What else might you suggest?

Hello, thank you for the invite. October 10, 2006 6:27 PM

I try and meditate every morning after I get my daughter off to school.  I sit on my Zafu in my bedroom and try and meditate for at least 10 minutes.  I also meditate during the day when I catch myself slipping out of the moment and getting frustrated or caught up elsewhere.  It may even be for a few minutes, but it stills my mind and brings me back to the present.  I also like to take time during some activities such as golf and surfing.  Both involve nature and purity of being.  Taking time, if only for a minute helps me pure the mind and absorb the present.  I also will meditate as I lay in bed prior to falling asleep.  There are many place to meditate.  A great book to read for practice is by Jon Kabat-Zinn  "Wherever you go, There you are, mindfulness meditation in everyday life".  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hello ... October 10, 2006 7:47 PM

Thank you, Scott ...

Meditate?  Hmmm ... when I sit on the beach and stare at the ocean, or enjoy how the sunlight glimmers through the leaves in the woods ... I suppose you could call that a form of meditation ...

This sounds great and I'm really interested in learning more about Zen and Buddism but I'm afraid I'm really uninformed and ignorant about the subject. Any ideas of where to go to learn more? Maybe a great web site? Arlene  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

here I am    ...i studied Zen with Joan Halifax Roshi for about 4 years , as I now am doing a native American SpiralDancing Apprenticeship it is sometimes a little difficult to keep up a regular zazen practice ...hope joining this group will strenghthn my motivation.

I am running a small retreat center in France and we do have a mediation room/ zendo --- so that is the place we and others sit.

Gassho to everyone here, Dagmar

anonymous Three jobs and the truth... October 14, 2006 12:07 PM

That sounds like a full load, Theresa. You are way more ambitious than I am.

What sort of band are you in, and what do you play/sing? How did your first show go?

Haha. Yeah, three jobs is quite the load. I just got my third job (a part time office job at a flooring warehouse). I'm hoping it turns to full time soon, so I can quit my current full time! I'm not happy with it.

The first show went really well. I was nervous all day until we got there, and for some reason, I was fine. I was able to look at everyone as I sang (That answers one of your questions). There were a lot of people there, and the bar is tiny as it is, so people were right up in my face, but they were friends, and it was easier than I thought it'd be. We're an all girl rock band. We cover two songs by The Crystals (He's a rebel and as well as And Then He Kissed Me). Of course they're sped up with guitar, bass, and drums and all girls singing back ups. The rest of our songs sound sort of like that. It's definately music that you can clap to. Very catchy.

I'm kinda glad it's over, and I can't wait to play again!

Hello October 16, 2006 6:27 AM

I have been practicing zazen informally for a couple of years now. I really enjoy sitting outside. I am not sure if my practice is truly zen or not as sometimes I sit just to be "open" to experience. Therefore, each session is very different!

Anyway, I look forward to reading everyone's posts and learning!

anonymous A belated welcome, Cary! February 15, 2007 2:02 PM

I really enjoy sitting outside, too (especially in the mountains or by the ocean where, for me, mindfulness and perspective seem to come…well…naturally.)  [report anonymous abuse]  [ accepted]
