You’re probably aware of our nation’s dog and cat overpopulation crisis, but did you know that birds face the same problem? All kinds of birds—from parrots to cockatoos—are bred for PetSmart and its competitors in much the same way that puppies are churned out of puppy mills for money-hungry pet stores. These magnificent birds are forced to spend their entire lives in tiny cages and are never given the chance to fly—one of their basic needs. Click here to learn more and to send a message to PetSmart asking that it set an example by ending the sale of birds in its stores.

Not only will you have the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve helped the birdies by sending PetSmart a message, but we’ll also give you 750 Street Team points for doing so. And of course, we’ll think you’re pretty amazing too. Also, be sure to forward this message to your friends so that they can get involved.

Thanks for lending your voice. Please let me know if there’s anything I can help you with!

Sincerely,

Hi everyone - hope you are having a wonderful weekend!Below is a letter already developed to be sent to a Wisconsin Medical school asking them to change the way in which they use animals in training medical school students. This letter encourages them to use scientific systems to replace animal models. Out of 125 medical schools, only 100 continue to use animals so progress is being made by just this kind of campaign. Let's help! Send a letter today (e-mail addresses are provided) and the letter can be cut & pasted. Then, please forward to your friends and Cross/post. As we always do on Care2, let's make a REAL Difference!  No more practice animals! Love and light, Jennie B.

Dear Dean Dunn and Dr. Cowley:

Two decades ago, medical schools enlisted dogs for the study of physiology, pharmacology, and surgery. Today, only Louisiana State University, New York Medical College and Medical College of Wisconsin offer live dog labs. Of 125 medical schools accredited by the Association of American Medical Colleges, at least 100 no longer use any nonhuman species to train medical students.

I respectfully ask Medical College of Wisconsin to terminate its old-fashioned dog labs. I urge you to replace all animal experiments with human-focused teaching tools.

In a lab drill that recently concluded, students work with anesthetized and intubated dogs during a five-hour procedure. They connect a shaved dog to a computer via intravenous probes and observe the animal's pulse. They then expose the dog's heart, using scalpels and bone saws, to inject chemicals, shock the heart with electrical paddles, and maneuver it by hand. Upon completion, each of 52 dogs is killed with a high dose of potassium. The school actually keeps spare dogs in stock, in case lab dogs die before their ordeal ends.

Obvious humane concerns have prompted the discovery of scientific systems to replace animal models entirely. Non-animal tools are typically more cost-effective and supply data relevant to human health questions and educational needs. Trauma training, for example, is now generally conducted with simulators that are less expensive than animal studies and crafted to emulate key facets of patient care. Human simulators, unlike dogs, let students learn at their own pace and repeat procedures as many times as necessary.

Students who gain knowledge in dog labs, on the other hand, have to "unlearn" results down the road. Incision pressure varies between dogs and humans. Size, location, texture and elasticity of internal organs are also vastly in incongruous. In fact, each species is so diverse in terms of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and genetics—animal studies have endangered humans with misleading data. Certainly, one-time practice on a dog is irrelevant at best.

Moreover, researchers cannot separate the effects of stress hormones in animals from the disease, drug or surgery under analysis. Findings published in Contemporary Topics in Laboratory Animal Science (Autumn 2004) reveal animals display quantifiable stress reactions to routine laboratory practices. These stress effects can influence the researcher's understanding of scientific discovery. Finally, the issue of "random source" dogs deserves your serious consideration. Ken Schroeder, the USDA Random Source Class B Animal Dealer who supplies the College with dogs, has been cited 16 times for failure to permit inspectors onto his property. USDA records attest to Schroeder's ailing animals and shoddy sheltering conditions.

With the multitude of viable non-animal research options now available, animal experimentation is simply no longer warranted.

Nearly 150 pigs recently perished while confined inside overloaded transport trailers at the Texas Department of Agriculture's (TDA) Livestock Export Facility near the Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport. Traveling from Ohio to Mexico, the pigs were abandoned at the international inspection point without food, water or relief from scorching temperatures. By the time the trailers were opened days later, almost 150 pigs were found dead. The excuse offered by the TDA: lack of proper paperwork allegedly preventing them from unloading the pigs! A report prepared by the Humane Farming Association (HFA)  documents cruel and inhumane treatment of cows and calves at Threemile Canyon Farms in Boardman, Ore., including statements from workers. Months ago, HFA filed a formal petition with Oregon Attorney General Hardy Myers formally demanding criminal charges be brought against Threemile Canyon Farms for animal abuse. Yet in spite of extensive documentation, Myers has yet to
take action. The extensive report documents widespread animal abuse.
The report documents how some of the male calves are separated from their mothers at birth and left to starve to death. A worker reports, "Supervisors usually shoot unwanted male calves. They don't die right away. Some lie on the floor and bleed out. Some have lied for three hours and are still alive." The dairy reportedly also kills calves by bashing their heads in or by swinging the calf by its hind legs and pounding its head against the concrete floor.
The report also documents how workers are told to slice off a section of a cow's teat without anesthetizing the animal. The cows' teats are susceptible to infection due to the concrete floors being covered with manure, urine and standing flush water. To make matters worse, workers report the massive farm continues to milk cows with infected teats, something workers first reported in a February 2005 article in the Portland
Oregonian newspaper. One worker says "the blood and pus draining from the teat will go into the milk when the cow is milked." Another worker states, "The boss tells us to milk the cows even if they know the milk is bad. The milk will look like pieces of cheese."
Yet in spite of worker statements, pictures and even video that the Humane Farming Association provided to Attorney General Myers, he has yet to take action to stop abuse at Threemile. The fact the state of Oregon previously provided $20 million to Threemile makes the state's inaction even more outrageous.
The abuse has to stop now. Please join the United Farm Workers in supporting the Humane Farming Association's call to stop the cruelty at Threemile by demanding the Oregon attorney general initiate criminal charges

This is my first attempt at writing.  I hope it will help.  If you think I did anything that I shouldn't have please let me know so I won't make the same mistake next time.

Here is the letter I wrote

Jun 22, 2006

To The Honorable Kay Killian,

It is my understanding that Timothy Scott Putt will go to trial on charges that he killed a small Jack Russell dog by purposely hitting it's head on the pavement while holding his legs.

North Carolina's animal cruelty law clearly states that to "maliciously torture, mutilate, maim, cruelly beat . . . or kill . . . any animal" is to commit a Class I felony, but to date Putt is facing mere misdemeanor animal cruelty charges. If he is convicted of the misdemeanor, he faces penalties equivalent to those for jaywalking or other petty crimes.

My husband is from North Carolina and one of my daughters lives there now with my 3 grandchildren in Mt. Gilead. I would hate for them to learn that this acceptable behavior, and that there is no real punishment for killing an innocent defenseless puppy. I want my grandkids to know that violence is violence, whether it's against another human being or an animal

I am urging you to please upgrade the the criminal charge to
a felony offense and upon conviction, significant jail time, mandatory psychological counseling,a prohibition on caring for or owning animals.

Please, I urge you to take this seriously. My grandchildren of your great state are depending on you to show and teach them. Please don't let them down.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Denise

The Honorable William C. Young
District Attorney
Cleveland County Law Enforcement Center

Dear Honorable William C. Young,

I am writing to you today concerning the very serious crime committed by Timothy Putt against a Jack Russell Terrier.
As I'm sure you are aware the coorelation between animal abuse and human abuse is very well documented by the FBI and the Dept. of Justice.  FBI Supervisory Special Agent Allen Brantley was quoted as saying "Animal cruelty... is not a harmless venting of emotion in a healthy individual; this is a warning sign."   Putt's actions in this case meet several of the factors that are considered high-risk for future violence against humans, as outlined by Dr. Randall Lockwood, http://www.pet-abuse.com/pages/abuse_connection/risk_assessment.php
To date this individual is facing mere misdemeanor animal cruelty charges.  North Carolina's animal cruelty law clearly states that to "maliciously torture, mutilate, maim, cruelly beat . . . or kill . . . any animal" is to commit a Class I felony.
With this in mind, I respectfully request that you upgrade the criminal charge against Timothy Putt to a felony offense, reflecting the malicious and cruel nature of his alleged crime. I also ask that you seek, upon conviction, significant jail time, mandatory psychological counseling and a prohibition on caring for or owning animals.
Thank you for what I'm sure will be an upholding of this law.

Sincerely,

Transcontinental's Ink is Running
Red not Black

Transcontinental
Western Media Group is running a full-page advertisement for Pappas
Furs in its tourist guide, GuestLife Vancouver. We have requested
Transcontinental to stop advertising for furriers given the realities
of trapping and of fur farming, particularly in China, but they have
argued that fur is a legal product and as such, there is no basis for
them to stop advertising for the fur industry. In addition,
Transcontinental has also shown a complete reluctance in negotiating
with Skinned!; that is why we need your help now.

You can make a
difference. Your calls and emails convinced The Sutton Place Hotel not
to renew their contract with Pappas Furs, and convinced Famous Players
theatres to stop running ads for furriers. Please make your voice heard
again by politely requesting Transcontinental to stop advertising for
furriers in their GuestLife Vancouver publication.

Here are some points that you may want to mention:

Fur
bearing animals endure hideous suffering and death. They are caught in
the wild with snares, leg hold and conibear traps and endure
excruciating pain. Death is not swift. In a desperate attempt to
escape, many try to chew their limbs off, or languish for hours or even
days until the trapper returns, only to be shot or clubbed to death if
they are still alive. Others die of infection or become prey to other
animals.

Fur farms (more like fur factories) subject animals
to a life time of suffering and a horrific death. Animals on fur farms
spend their entire lives in small, filthy cages, madly pacing back and
forth out of stress and boredom. Cannibalism is often the grim reality
of this psychological distress. There is no humane slaughter
legislation to protect these animals. Fur farmers use gruesome killing
methods that include gassing, suffocation, neck breaking, anal and
vaginal electrocution. China’s fur farms now produce 80% of the world’s
fur pelts and some reports say that up to 50% of animals raised on
Chinese fur farms are skinned alive.

Furthermore, contrary to
the deceitful claims of the fur industry, fur is not an eco-friendly
product. The fur industry relies on the heavy use of toxic caustic
acids to treat pelts which would otherwise rot as fur garments.

Snares,
leg hold and conibear traps are indiscriminate and often non-targeted
animals are caught and deemed as “trash”, even though they may be
members of endangered species.

Two million dogs and cats
meet an agonizing and painful death to have their pelts turned into
full length coats, fur trim and cheap trinkets in just China alone.

The Louisiana State Legislature recently passed H.B. 311, a bill that will prevent the Louisiana Board of Ethics from prosecuting complaints from whistleblowers who speak out against animal welfare and employee safety violations if there is a pending civil lawsuit or complaint before a federal body.

The bill would provide a cushion for institutions like the New Iberia Research Center (NIRC), which currently holds some 400 chimpanzees (the largest chimpanzee research facility in the country) and 6,000 monkeys. The University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL)’s NIRC is currently the subject of a formal ethics charge for retaliating against a whistleblower who spoke out against ULL-NIRC alleging cruelty toward chimpanzees and monkeys.
