TO: All People Who Care There has been much attention on the trade in cat and dog fur recently. This is an issue that has struck a chord with consumers and politicians alike, reflecting a widespread repugnance at the idea of wearing the skin and fur of companion animals. Investigations by animal welfare organisations have revealed the suffering caused to millions of animals by this trade. Many cats and dogs are killed inhumanely in countries such as China where there is little or no animal welfare legislation. The European Parliament has finally adopted a Regulation to ban the import into the EU of cat and dog fur. The move ends many years of campaigning by animal welfare organisations and politicians to end a trade which causes terrible animal suffering. The ban will apply from 31 December 2008. The Ban will not stop the fur trade, only in Cats and Dogs, but the barbaric treatment can be stopped. The offending countries must improve welfare standards for all animals if it wants to do business with Europe. They must provide resources to help the Fur producers to find alternative incomes which do not involve animal cruelty. This will encourage investment from developed countries who can also help. Please keep the pressure up and do what you can to help. Contact your own governments to put political pressure on the offending countries. However, House Bill 2991 is currently pending in the Committee on Revision of Laws that provides a stiffer penalty to dog meat traders. Introduced by Representative Francis Escudero, the creation of the bill was based on the need to upgrade an Act that, as noble as the objectives of the law are, the traders remain elusive because the penalty is unrealistic. The penalty must be upgraded. OUR GOAL is to obtain OVER 50,000 signatures by JUNE 30, 2007. It is obvious that the only way we can ensure that dogs in the Philippines are protected is to place the Philippines government under the international spotlight.

Korean Minister to Stop Massacre of Cats and Dogs in Response to Avian Flu Outbreak 2:17 PM

In response to an outbreak of avian flu (the H5N1 virus), South Korean officials are now in the process of slaughtering hundreds of thousands of animals within range of the outbreak site, including chickens, pigs, cats and dogs. Since there is no scientific evidence that humans can contract the virus from cats and dogs, killing them seems pointlessly cruel, but the practice of eating dog and cat meat in South Korea could fuel the slaughter. Please "Take Action" to urge the South Korean Minister of Agriculture to spare cats' and dogs' lives.

The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is asking for your help, ASPCA supporters. The UK-based group has launched the “Animals Matter To Me” campaign, which represents the biggest-ever global animal welfare initiative linking the entire animal welfare movement under one strategic goal—global recognition that animals are sentient beings, capable of feeling pain and suffering. As such, WSPA is seeking 10 million signatures to let governments of the world know that we are serious about achieving a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare at the United Nations.

The newest news is not good for Bill. He has an infection in one of his lungs similar to tuberculosis and is  on heavy antibiotics
The Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka, California has been keeping Bill, the chimpanzee, in solitary confinement for years. He is imprisoned in a tiny cement cell and the City of Eureka refuses to let him go to a sanctuary where he can be with other chimpanzees and run on grass and swing on trees. Please demand the Eureka City Council to do the right and humane thing and let Bill go to a chimpanzee sanctuary where he can enjoy life. He must not be allowed to continue to languish in and eventually die a lonely death in his cell.

Please accept our comments regarding Worcester County Animal Control Officer Michelle Mulverhill, who starved four cats and an elderly dog to death. Mulverhill deprived the cats and dog of adequate food and water for as many as 15 days prior to the August 15 discovery of their rotting remains.

Mr. Conte, Mulverhill's heinous actions demonstrate a total disregard for the agony and misery all sentient beings are capable of suffering. Indeed, this case is particularly disturbing as Mulverhill is a public servant sworn to protect animals from abuse.

The Breaking Point
It is a common practice at training facilities to introduce young chimpanzees to their new jobs and masters by conducting what the industry calls "breaking the spirit." Normal, healthy young chimpanzees are naturally playful, curious, energetic, and mischievous, but these traits don't make them good "actors." So they are subject to repeated episodes of beating and other painful acts of cruelty. Sarah Baeckler, a chimpanzee expert who volunteered at Malibu's Amazing Animal Actors training compound, expressed horror over the needless violence she witnessed every day. "The trainers physically abuse the chimpanzees for various reasons, but often for no reason at all," she said. "If the chimpanzees try to run away from a trainer, they are beaten. If they bite someone, they are beaten. If they don't pay attention, they are beaten. Sometimes they are beaten without any provocation or for things that are completely out of their control ๏ฟฝ I was specifically instructed to hit or kick them at the first sign of any aggression or misbehavior."
Cruel Intentions
Animal trainers will use any means necessary to force their victims to perform. Punching and kicking are everyday occurrences, and serious beatings aren't given a second thought. A volunteer at Amazing Animal Actors, one of the five major chimpanzee training facilities that supplies Hollywood, heard trainers say these horrible things about the chimpanzees being held there:

- "Hit them hard enough that they know you mean business but not so hard that you do permanent damage."

- "Aim for her head because it's really sturdy."

- "Kick her in the face as hard as you can. You can't hurt her."

- "If you need to hit her, use this [referring to the handle end of the hammer]."

- "Don't be afraid to just hit her."

The trainers' actions were even crueler than their words. The volunteer talked about witnessing these abusive events:

- "The trainer demonstrated for me: she made a fist and punched Sable in the head with her right hand, just above her left eye. Sable screamed and jumped tighter into my arms, no longer squirming. The trainer had to wave her hand like this to shake off the pain--she had hit Sable that hard."

- "I witnessed trainers punching her in the back, kicking her in the head, and throwing objects at her including a rock, a mallet, and a sawed-off broom handle."

- "I saw a volunteer ask the compound director how to get Cody to stand up, and the director grabbed Cody's ear and forced him to stand by pulling his ear sharply until Cody screamed in pain."

- "The director grabbed Cody by his lower lip, pulled him forward, and then pushed him down until he was lying on his back. Again, Cody screamed and whimpered in response. I saw volunteers and trainers hit Cody on the head with a lock, take a full windup and punch him in the back, kick him in the head, and hit him with a blunt instrument known as 'the ugly stick.'"

- "I watched as the compound director started punching Apollo repeatedly with all his strength, throwing his whole body into each punch."

- "A trainer punched Apollo in the face and then pinned him against the fence with his knee."

- "The director hit Apollo three times with a broom handle, first winding up and hitting him with something akin to a baseball swing, and then whacking Apollo twice at close range and really hard."

"Abuse and physical violence are seemingly commonplace in this industry, and it's not even a secret," the volunteer said. "In fact, it's taught in a training school that is currently producing many future animal trainers and zoo workers."

Our polar bears - and their cubs - are in big trouble. Scientists say that global warming is pushing them to the very brink of extinction. Now, as if that's not bad enough, President Bush continues to push for harmful drilling in one of the places most important to denning polar bears - the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Studies show that the noise from oil exploration and drilling can disturb and frighten denning mother polar bears, causing mother bears to abandon their dens and leaving their cubs to die.

 
According to a recent study, global warming could push polar bears to extinction within 25 years. Ironically, oil from the Arctic Refuge would not even begin to affect the price of a gallon of gasoline for at least 20 years after the Refuge is first drilled. Even then, it would lower gas prices by only about a penny per gallon.

Making sure our polar bears are around for our children is worth more than a penny a gallon.

President Bush may not listen to the American public's opposition to drilling, but maybe he'll listen to his wife. As an educator and a mother, Laura Bush should understand the devastating impact of oil drilling on polar bear mothers and their cubs.

The Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka, California has been keeping Bill, the chimpanzee, in solitary confinement for years. He is imprisoned in a tiny cement cell and the City of Eureka refuses to let him go to a sanctuary where he can be with other chimpanzees and run on grass and swing on trees. Please demand the Eureka City Council to do the right and humane thing and let Bill go to a chimpanzee sanctuary where he can enjoy life. He must not be allowed to continue to languish in and eventually die a lonely death in his cell.

Kyle Hupfer is the Director of the Indiana Dept of Natural Resources. Last year (2005) a decision was made that no more hunting was to take place of white tailed deer and other animals behind high fences (Canned Hunts) in Indiana.
The Dept of Natural Resources passed emergency and permanent rules and the Governor and Attorney General signed off. Indiana State Legislature did not intervene.
But this year, Kyle Hupfer has changed his mind and his words about hunting ethics and fair chase. Hupfer is near a settlement with a handful of Shooting Preserves ( Canned Hunts) owners that allows the activity to continue for at least another 10 years. He says that new Shooting Preserves will not be allowed to start up. He thinks that "this is the time to be reasonable, be fair"

PROTEST

Please take attitude regarding stray dogs crises in Bucharest, Romania. Present situation:

Today, 30th of January 2006, the local authorities (Bucharest Mayor and Chief of Animal Survey Administration) took the decision to start the campaign of the stray dogs killing. This fact is due to the tragical event, that happened on 29th of January 2006 in Bucharest, near the Government Residence. A Japanese business man died because of a wound made by a dog bite. So far there are no proofs and no witnesses to demonstrate that this tragical accident involved a stray dog. Until now the Police didn’t take into consideration to possibility that it might be a crime that used a fight dog as a killing weapon. The case is unfortunately closed, being easily for the authorities to blame a stray dog then to solve a possible murder. The political decision of the authorities jumped the conclusions, being taken too fast (in several hours), following a very aggressive media campaign that created panic and different violent reaction (dogs are poisoned, mutilated burned).

The stray dog population is something normal in citizens life being a very old reality since decades. The massive demolitions during the communist regime, from the 80's generated stray dogs population increase and except massive extermination, nobody in Romania took action to settle a sterilization program based on human and decent methods of caching, selection, tagging, neutering and releasing the stray dogs.


Our proposal:

Please help us to:

- convince the local authorities to manage this problem in a human way, respecting international standards, laws and conventions that Romania signed to become part of European Union in 2007,

- stop the slaughter of the animals,

- make the authorities to understand the importance of respecting animal and human rights, according with international regulations,

- convince the authorities that the solution offered by local and international NGO’s in this issue is a solution based an scientific research, the only solution that can solve the problem.

We do believe that Romania cannot be integrated in European Union if we cannot deal with this problem in a fair way and we are rushing to start a real massacre instead of finding a decent solution.

All you hear is a door slammed closed and the sound of screams and choking as the gas is turned on. They see one another dying, going into convulsions and bleeding out of the mouth. Many are not quite dead and are thrown back in the incinerator. We are not talking about the Holocaust, we are talking about something that happens in your community every day.

Thousands of dogs are put down every year in North Carolina. Many shelters have not updated their method of euthanasia and are still using the gas chamber. In many peoples eyes this is not humane. The only humane way to put a dog to sleep is by lethal injection through a vein in the leg. This method takes less than 30 seconds and is pain free for the most part.

Please help, by signing this petition, North Carolina put a law into affect to make lethal injection into the leg the only way to euthanize an animal.

The situation in Serbia is terrible, in all Serbian towns there are flayer services to the communal service, who are engaged in capturing and killing lost or stray dogs and cats, in collaboration with the veterinary service and breaking the legislation.They charge this terrible "service" 50 euros for each corpse ( per killed dogs or cats). This behavior is punishable under article 269. of the Criminal Code of Serbia with up to 3 years of imprisonment.
We , The Society friends of Animals "Friend" and The Society for protect and welfare of animals"Arka" , collected the documents and material proofs confirming dose criminal abuses and gave them to allmost all local prosecutors in Serbia. There was no reply.
In spite of all our efforts , in spite of thousands of letters sent to the responsible institutions on the local and republican levels, nothing changed: in Serbia , thousands of dogs and cats are killed on a regular basis,and that crime is even paid for with the money of tax payers.

In a hideously cruel response to an outbreak of rabies in late July, authorities in Mouding County in Southwest China ordered the killing of more than 50,000 dogs, including 4,000 who were immunized against the disease. Officials clubbed many animals to death in the street right before their guardians' eyes. Animals who were not beaten mercilessly died equally violent, gruesome deaths by poisoning or electrocution. Now the Chinese government has issued orders to kill an additional 500,000 dogs. The U.S. Navy is still planning on undertaking a scaled back version of their testing of Low Frequency Active (LFA) sonar in the oceans. LFA is proven to injure and destroy whales and dolphins. LFA noise is millions of times more intense than the Navy considers safe for human divers and billions of times more intense than levels known to disturb large whales.

In November, following a ruling by a Federal magistrate, the Navy scaled back its testing plans. But it hasn't scaled back sufficiently, as the sonar can seriously harm marine life. Sign now, and support a ban on such testing.


In March, 2000, during a Mid- range frequency (rather
than the Low Frequency bandwidth of LFA test in the Bahamas, four different species of whales and dolphins beached themselves suffering from hemorrhaging/bleeding in the ears. A National Marine Fisheries Service and Navy investigation determined the deaths were almost certainly caused by the LFA test. A follow-on study in February 2001, determined that at least one of those whale species no longer existed in the area.


Mid-range frequencies are already in use world-wide, and are now proven to be very dangerous in certain circumstances. The LFAS system is even more dangerous, as the sounds will propagate farther and be disabling at a greater distance.


Whales rely on their sensitive hearing for survival. A whale cannot survive without its hearing. The Navy's attempts to deploy LFA could result in the extermination of whales and dolphins world wide. SIGN NOW!

Navy Sonar Causes Beached Whale Deaths
Civilian Oversight Agency Claims Navy Endangers Marine Mammals

In a recent letter, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) criticized the Navy for ignoring scientific evidence that their mid-frequency sonar tests harm whales and for using a measure for allowable noise 100 times louder than NOAA's recommended level. The letter also challenged the Navy's plans to build a 500-square-nautical-mile underwater sonar training range in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North Carolina where they plan to hold submarine warfare training exercises.

NOAA is the civilian agency responsible for issues affecting the marine environment and submitted the letter in response to the Navy's draft environmental impact statement for the proposed testing facility. While NOAA have always in general publicly agreed with the Navy's stance on sonar experimentation, the letter indicates that officials have expressed their concerns to Navy personnel on a number of occasions to no avail, reflecting fundamental disagreements between the groups. The Navy bases their conclusion that sonar tests pose no serious threat to migratory whales on research they have conducted on captive whales, but NOAA points out that studies of marine mammals in the wild indicate that military sonar is causing their organs to hemorrhage with fatal results. The Navy's draft also proposes using a maximum allowable sound level of 190 decibels, which is over 100 times noisier than NOAA's 173 decibel standard.

Since the Navy began conducting sonar experiments in 2000, dozens of whales have fatally or near-fatally stranded themselves on beaches in the Bahamas, the Canary Islands, Japan, Hawaii and Washington State. NOAA is still investigating the stranding deaths of 37 whales from three different species off the North Carolina coastline last year and has expressed concerns that the Navy's proposed testing facility could disrupt the endangered right whale's annual migration through the area.

Facts about Dolphin Drive Hunts in Japan

During drive hunts, migrating pods of dolphins and other small whales are first panicked and confused by loud banging, then herded, by the hundreds, into shallow coves and butchered, one by one, by fishermen. Every year, some 20,000 small cetaceans of several species, some of which are endangered, including bottlenose dolphins, striped dolphins, spotted dolphins, Risso’s dolphins, short-finned pilot whales, white-sided dolphins and false killer whales, are killed or taken in the drives, sometimes illegally.

This cruel and inhumane practice is sanctioned and controlled by the Government of Japan, which claims that these animals compete with the fishermen and slaughtering them is a means of pest control, but no evidence for this claim exists. The dolphins are processed and used as pet food or fertilizer, and the government is encouraging the consumption of dolphin meat. In fact, the hunts would be economically unviable without the sale of live dolphins captured during the drives to dolphinariums in Asia and elsewhere.

There is abundant scientific evidence that drive hunts inflict incredible pain and suffering on highly intelligent, self-aware, and socially complex animals. The hunts have been universally condemned on both welfare and conservation grounds, but repeated requests to end them, from the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and numerous other scientific and conservation organizations, have been ignored.

The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), the professional organization that represents over 1,200 zoos and aquariums around the world, and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in the United States, have also condemned these hunts. WAZA explicitly prohibits member organizations from procuring animals from drive hunts. Now, marine scientists, WAZA, and AZA have joined with other non-governmental organizations to bring an immediate end to drive hunting.

IDA and dozens of groups worldwide to hold demonstrations on Japan Dolphin Day 2006

Every year from October through March in small towns along the Japanese coast, fishermen kill about 20,000 marine mammals in the most brutal way imaginable. They use loud noises to disorient and herd whole pods of dolphins, porpoises and small whales into shallow bays, then stretch nets across the mouth of the bay to close off all exits. The next morning, the slaughter begins, as fishermen use sharp spears and hooks to massacre the helpless cetaceans. Most of them are butchered for meat that is sold in restaurants and supermarkets, while some are sold to marine parks where they spend years in loneliness and deprivation for the "entertainment" of audiences.

This annual slaughter is the largest massacre of dolphins anywhere in the world, and it continues because the atrocity is deliberately kept hidden from the Japanese people. That is why each year on September 20th, a host of groups around the world join together to organize an international day of protest to expose the killing and put pressure on the Japanese Government to end it once and for all. As part of this day of action, IDA and the Earth Island Institute will co-host a demonstration at the Japanese consulate in San Francisco to coincide with protests taking place around the world. Volunteers from both groups will carry signs and hand out literature condemning the slaughter. IDA will also hold a protest at the Japanese consulate in Los Angeles.

What You Can Do:

- Attend IDA's protests in San Francisco or Los Angeles on Wednesday, September 20th. If you don't live in California, organize a protest at the Japanese consulate or embassy nearest you. Also write, call and fax the Japanese Embassy to let officials know that you are appalled by their country's brutal massacre of marine mammals.

Please help me to stop this barbaric and cruel practice in Michigan. There are still some 10 counties in which animals (mostly dogs) that are sold to Class B dealers where these poor souls are abused, neglected and then sold to facilities where they are further tortured in the most horrible ways, then discarded and left to die. This must stop! In this case, we are working on ending this in Gladwin, Michigan.  Thank you.

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (AP) - A 13-year-old Middletown boy is facing an animal cruelty charge after police say he set fire to a cat that had wandered into his yard.  Police say the boy was tired of the cat getting into the garbage, so on Tuesday night he hit it with a piece of wood, wrapped it in an alcohol-soaked tissue and set it on fire.

 

The cat had to be euthanized, and the boy is charged with delinquency by way of cruelty to animals. He was released to his mother and ordered to appear in Butler County Juvenile Court next month.

 

The boy's father also was charged with obstructing official business after police say he cursed at officers on the scene.

 

Middletown is about 30 miles north of Cincinnati.
