Action: Petition against the 5th World Water Forum and World Water Council
10 years ago

Dear all:
This petition protests the 5th World Water Forum and World Water Council which promotes policies that privatize and commercialize water. Please help to show your support for water as a human right, part of the global commons and a public service. The petition aims for 20, 000 signatures to match the 20, 000 people expected at the 5th World Water Forum. The petition can be found at:

The petition deadline is March 20, 2009 so please invite your colleagues, friends and family to sign!

On March 16-22, 2009, the 5th World Water Forum, named Bridging Divides for Water, will be held in Istanbul, Turkey. At first glance, the 5th Forum is an event for water experts, activists, government officials and water organizations to exchange ideas and develop policies on a range of water issues. While water experts and scientists have an important role in debates on water issues, the Forum is controlled by the world's two largest water corporations, Suez and Veolia, resulting in harmful policies that privatize and commercialize water. In the past, privatization and commercialization has resulted in price hikes, water pollution and health problems. Please help by signing the petition urging the UN to create a truly open, transparent and legitimate Global Forum on Water. This petition stems from work I did for my MA thesis last year. I continued this work because I really believe that everyone has a right to water and that water belongs to everyone.

Thank you!
Emma Lui
