Bioterrorism Before Elections
Sponsor: Trust for America's Health Soon after the tragedy of 9/11, Congress passed legislation to upgrade the nation’s capacity to respond to acts of bioterrorism and other public health emergencies. The statute's authorization is set to expire on September 30th.

New legislation pending before Congress would shore up emergency preparedness measures and improve public health capabilities at the state and local level. Passing this bill is vital to the nation's homeland security and the nation's health. Congress's failure to act would put all of us at risk.

While considerable progress has been achieved in improving America's health emergency preparedness, the nation is still not adequately prepared to respond to the health threats posed by diseases, disasters and bioterrorism. And while there is no way to be 100 percent prepared, there are still basic achievable levels of preparedness the nation has yet to meet. Americans deserve better.

Tell Congress to pass this essential legislation before they leave Washington to campaign for the November elections.

Have you ever thought about what you—and the millions of other tourists who travel abroad every year—are really bringing back with you from your vacation?

I’m writing on behalf of IFAW to alert you to one of the most serious problems threatening wildlife today—a problem you might have even participated in without knowing it.

Each year, customs officers seize thousands of wildlife items from travelers, many of them tourist souvenirs made from endangered or threatened species. Examples include elephant ivory carvings and jewelry, tortoise and turtle shell accessories, big cat skins, reptile skin handbags, belts and shoes, porcupine quill coasters and lampshades, coral and shells, and many more.

Sadly, many tourists buying souvenirs made from wildlife have no idea that they have done anything wrong, often because these items are sold openly in resorts, airports, shops and markets—masking the bloody truth behind the wildlife trinkets being sold.

It is often illegal to bring wildlife souvenirs home with you, particularly those made from the most threatened species such as elephants and marine turtles. Other wildlife such as porcupines and sharks, although not prohibited from international trade, are often cruelly and widely hunted to make a necklace, coaster or picture frame: ironically to remind people of their wonderful wildlife experience.

A recent investigation by IFAW in South Africa—a popular holiday destination—demonstrates the extent of the problem. IFAW researchers discovered a thriving trade in wildlife souvenirs, including ivory carvings, porcupine quills and sharks’ teeth, many of which are being sold illegally to tourists.

What else can you do?

Spend your money wisely on your vacation by buying alternative mementos that directly benefit local people of the areas you visit, such as non-animal handicrafts, instead of items that harm the wildlife you are there to see.

Please also help IFAW spread the word to others—advise your friends and family to “Think Twice” when on their vacations, and then call your local travel agents and ask them to do the same. (Travel agents can click here to request materials from IFAW.

Animals are a very important part of our lives, believe it or not, and help the world go round. If animals are gone one day, chaos will arise.

An oil-soaked sea otter in the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge
Once again, Alaska’s pristine waters have fallen victim to a devastating oil spill. On December 8, 2004, a Malaysian freighter, Selendang Ayu, ran aground in the Aleutian Islands after its engine failed in severe weather. Six humans were lost and at least 40,000 gallons of oil leaked into one of the world’s most remote and ecologically rich wildlife refuges, the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. This was the worst oil spill in U.S. waters since the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster.

The Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge is home to a wide array of sea birds and marine mammals, and is part of the rich North Pacific fishery, which generates nearly $2 billion in revenue each year. Based on the legacy of the Exxon spill, we know this disaster will have a lasting impact on endangered marine species. "

"It's not enough for them (weened pups) to go swimming far.Fifty per cent of the seals are in good condition. The rest are poor or very poor. They can't survive this year as well." Last year about 500,000 seals died of starvation on the Namibian coastline. Metzger said a researcher from the Fisheries and Marine Resources Ministry was investigating the situation. The researcher believed the seals would survive if there was sufficient fish. "There haven't been fish here for three years. Where are they going to come from now?"
