"Happiness is a warm gun."

Over 260 people are shot with firearms in this country each day, and over 80 of them die.

What are we going to do about it?

Great thread, Archie. But i'm stumped trying to think of another gun song!

How about Johnny Cash?

Don't Take Your Guns to Town, from the Ed Sullivan Show, 1959:

That's Johnny live on the Ed Sullivan show, 1959. I was probably about the same age as the two kids, and I had a Roy Rogers outfit just like theirs. We used to watch the Ed Sullivan show every Sunday, and I might have even seen this one live...

A young cowboy named Billy Joe
Grew restless on the farm
A boy filled with wanderlust
Who really meant no harm
He changed his clothes and shined his boots
And combed his dark hair down
And his mother cried as he walked out;

Refrain:
"Don't take your guns to town son,
Leave your guns at home Bill,
Don't take your guns to town."

He laughed and kiss his mom and said
Your Billy Joes a man
i can shoot as quick and striaght as
anybody can.
but i'd wouldn't shoot without a cause
i'd gun nobody down
but she cried again as he rode away
Refrain:
"Don't take your guns to town son,
Leave your guns at home Bill,
Don't take your guns to town."

He sang a song as on he rode,
His guns hung at his hips
He rode into a cattle town,
A smile upon his lips
He stopped and walked into a bar and laid his money down
But his mother's words echoed again;

Refrain:
"Don't take your guns to town son,
Leave your guns at home Bill,
Don't take your guns to town."

He drank his first strong liquor then to calm his shaking hand
And tried to tell himself at last he had become a man
A dusty cowpoke at his side began to laugh him down
And he heard again his mother's words;

Refrain:
"Don't take your guns to town son,
Leave your guns at home Bill,
Don't take your guns to town."

Bill was raged and Billy Joe reached for his gun to draw
But the stranger drew his gun and fired before he even saw
As Billy Joe fell to the floor the crowd all gathered 'round
And wondered at his final words;

Refrain:
"Don't take your guns to town son,
Leave your guns at home Bill,
Don't take your guns to town."

You can't beat Johny Cash, and thanks for that classic clip, Archie.

This one came to mind:

Well hand guns are made for killin' They ain't no good for nothin' else And if you like to drink your whiskey You might even shoot yourself So why don't dump 'em people To the bottom of the sea Before some ol' fool come around here Wanna shoot either you or me

Mr. Saturday Night Special Got a barrel that's blue and cold Ain't good for nothin' But put a man six feet in a hole

My Protest Song and Guns

You may like to hear a song I wrote about giving up our guns. It's called Breaking News Remix, and you can hear it if you go to Pacific Buffalo's website, pacificbuffalo.com.

My favorite verse is:

Why can't someone invent
a miraculous tent,
where friend and foe could break bread
They'd walk through the door
Leave their feuding on the floor
And come out holding hands instead
It's not rocket science to disavow violence
Just make up our minds and it's done
Don't leave it to fate
It isn't too late
To give up our bombs and our guns.

The Devil's Right Hand

About the time that Daddy left to fight the big war
I saw my first pistol in the general store
In the general store, when I was thirteen
I thought it was the finest thing I ever had seen

So l asked if I could have one someday when I grew up
Mama dropped a dozen eggs, she really blew up
She really blew up, and she didn't understand
Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

The devil's right hand, the devil's right hand
Mama says the pistol is the devil's right hand

Me very first pistol was a cap and ball Colt
Shoots as fast as lightnin' but it loads a mite slow
It loads a mite slow, and soon I found out
It'll get you into trouble but it can't get you out

So then I went and bought myself a Colt 45
Called a peacemaker but I never knew why
I never knew why, I didn't understand
Mama says the pistol is the devil's right hand

The devil's right hand, the devil's right hand
Mama says the pistol is the devil's right hand

Got into a card game in a company town
I caught a miner cheating, I shot the dog down
I shot the dog down, I watched the man fall
He never touched his holster, never had a chance to draw

The trial was in the morning and they drug me out of bed
Asked me how I pleaded, not guilty I said
Not guilty I said, you've got the wrong man
Nothing touched the trigger but the devil's right hand

The devil's right hand, the devil's right hand
Mama says the pistol is the devil's right hand

The devil's right hand, the devil's right hand
Mama says the pistol is the devil's right hand

Lester Chambers hospitalized

Lester Chambers, of The Chambers Brothers Fame, was attacked on stage, knocked down and hospitalized after dedicating the song People Get Ready to Trayvon Martin. Dude's in his seventies and still throwin' down. He flashed the peace sign as they were loading him into the ambulance....

Lotta harsh news this week...

Vigilante couple shooting up cops in Las Vegas, ANOTHER school shooting, 3 year old shoots his twin brother, dude drives out to a shooting range and shoots himself in the head.... There's more, too - that ain't even half of it. The more things don't change, the more they stay the same. Seems to me like it's getting worse, though....
