July 18, 2008 Hauling herself across the sand, a leatherback turtle makes her way out of the ocean to nest on Matura Beach in Trinidad.
Photographer Brian Skerry describes how he made this image: "This picture was made at about 2:00 AM under a nearly full moon. I did a long exposure and used a tiny bit of flash for fill light. But I set the flash on 1/16th power and gelled it (covered it with a filter) to reduce the output even further. Leatherbacks are affected by white light and even though the scientist I was working with told me I could use all the flash I wanted, I resisted and shot the turtles with a low flash only during moonlight."

In the Netherlands every year four million mink needlessly await their deaths in barren mesh cages. After seven months of stress, anxiety, and boredom they are gassed. After their death they end up as a coat, collar, or hat. You can comment too!
