Terrorism in America September 29, 2008 3:06 AM

Muslim children and babies were victims of a chemical attack in Ohio just days after the Clarion fund distributed the dvd "Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West" in newspapers throughout the 'swing states', including Ohio.

http://www. dailykos. com/storyonly/2008/9/28/203016/697/536/613742

It has now been requested that the IRS investigate the Clarion Fund for violating the law stating that 501c3's can't participate in politics. One of the Clarion's other websites also features an ad for John McCain.

www. israelenews. com/view. asp?ID=3214

The Council for American-Islamic Relations asked the FEC to investigate the DVD distribution, which targeted about 28 million households mostly in battleground election states.

http://ap. google. com/article/ALeqM5iEsmhiNuC1Aio2bPql9Iw1z6I3ywD93COGEG1

From Wikipedia:
Clarion Fund is a nonprofit organization founded in 2006 based in New York City whose mission, according to its website, is "to educate Americans about issues of national security," with its main focus on what it calls "the most urgent threat of radical Islam."[1] The organization was founded by Israeli-Canadian film producer Raphael Shore[2].

In September 2008, the group gained attention by distributing, with the aid of the Endowment for Middle East Truth[3], free copies of the film Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West, produced and co-written by Shore, by mail and in newspaper supplements.[4]. The Fund has reportedly sent 28 million DVDs to at least 70 newspapers in swing states to place at the doorstep of newspaper subscribers.
[1][2]

According to Clarion Fund's incorporation papers, it is based as the same address as Aish Hatorah, an Israeli organization.[5] The three founders of The Clarion Fund are or were full-time employees of Aish HaTorah.[6] Raphael Shore, the leader of The Clarion Fund is also a full-time employee of Aish HaTorah.[7] The Clarion Fund has collaborated with pro-Israel media watch organization HonestReporting in the production of its films. HonestReporting originally was a project of the Aish Hatorah organization.
[8]

Critics have accused the Clarion Fund, through its distribution of the Obsession film, for misleadingly portraying Islam as a threatening religion bent on the destruction of Western civilization, interspersing untruthful and incendiary commentary with images of Nazis and suicide bombing indoctrination.
[9][10][11] Others have called the film 'award winning' and 'required viewing'[12]

The Associated Press reports that Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a civil liberties and advocacy group for Muslims in North America, has asked for the Federal Election Commission to investigate the Clarion Fund's DVD distribution claiming that it was an attempt to influence the 2008 US President Election. As evidence of inappropriate political bias on the part of The Clarion Fund, AP cited Patriot News of Harrisburg, Pa. reporting "that a Clarion Fund Web site ran a pro-McCain article before it attracted notice and was taken down.
"[13]

http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Clarion_Fund

The Clarion Fund will be releasing a new dvd, "The Third Jihad", featuring Rudy Giuliani warning about Muslim terrorists trying to take over America from within.

http://clarionfund. org/
http://www. thethirdjihad. com/

Please write John McCain and ask him to repudiate fearmongering tactics like those used by the Clarion Fund, request the Clarion Fund turn over it's donor list to Federal authorities and do everything in his power to stop any further campaign activities by his supporters that have the potential to incite violence.

Aid to Myanmar (Burma) May 15, 2008 3:56 AM

The alarming casualties in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) from Cyclone Nargis continue to rise on a daily basis. With a grant of at least US $100,000, TPRF is partnering with Friends of the World Food Program (FWFP) to help the World Food Programme (WFP) bring immediate aid to the hundreds of thousands of survivors who have been stranded without food, shelter, or potable water. On Friday, May 9, at 4:00 PM local time, WPF became one of the first agencies to be allowed to deliver aid directly to the people rather than through the government of Myanmar. WFP will be providing life-saving food assistance for 630,000 people for six months, until the next harvest in October/November. If you would like to support this effort, please earmark your contribution for this purpose in the comments field on the donate page of the TPRF Web site:

Help Tibet March 17, 2008 3:55 PM

March 10th, 2008 marked the 49th anniversary of the Tibetan Uprising against the Chinese occupation in Lhasa. Not surprisingly, many Tibetans have decided to demonstrate on this occasion, against the arbitrary arrest and imprisonment, torture, lack of freedom of expression and religion, discrimination, exploitation, and killing that continue in Tibet to this day. And also not surprisingly, Chinese authorities have responded by beating, shooting, arresting, and torturing the protesters.

You can support the protesters and advocate for their safety:

1) Lodge a complaint with the Chinese authorities in Lhasa for their treatment of Tibetans:
http://actionnetwork.org/campaign/tibet_protests?rk=%2d7SKEBEqOz9CE
http://actionnetwork.org/campaign/amdoprotest/

2) Contact the Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith and ask him to publicly call upon the Chinese Government to immediately provide information on the welfare and whereabouts of the detained Buddhist monks:
https://www.atc.org.au/members/ecampaign/send_email/8

3) Call on your representatives to condemn the attacks:

Canada: http://tinyurl.com/zqd9g

4) Pledge to boycott the Olympics:

5) Complain to the IOC:
http://actionnetwork.org/campaign/tibet_IOC

6) Please call the Chinese authorities in Lhasa to show them the whole world is monitoring their actions closely:

Please call after 9am in Chinese time. To see the current time in China, click here: http://www.worldtimeserver.com/current_time_in_CN.aspx

Secretary of the Chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR): +86 891 632 5889

If the person on the phone doesn't speak English, please read out loud the below lines in Chinese.
English: The Chinese government must not arrest the Tibetans
Chinese: "jang-fu bu-shue daibu zang-tsu" (Pinyin: zhengfu buxu daibu zangzu)

Improve Standards of Animal Welfare in European Laboratories November 11, 2007 3:50 PM

TO: All People Who Care The European Commission is currently reviewing Directive 86/609/EEC, which sets out the rules for animal experimentation across the whole of Europe. There is still time to make a difference to the final draft. A new European Chemical Testing Policy called REACH proposes to Test 30,000 Chemicals of every kind - from those used in industrial processes to the ingredients of consumer products - on Millions of animals from mice to fish to dogs, causing untold suffering. This Directive should help these animals while still improving standards. The European Commission itself acknowledges that non-animal replacements "...have the potential to provide robust information through quality-controlled, state-of-the-art tests which are faster and less cost-intensive than classical animal-based tests". It has launched a Community Action Plan for the Protection and Welfare of Animals. This explicitly states "The final aim is to replace animal experiments with methods not entailing the use of an animal." It is in all our interest that Animal Testing is replaced with Alternatives based on Human Biology not Animals. For evidence that superior Alternative Research & Testing is replacing Animal Testing visit http://www.drhadwentrust.org/ Please sign "Replace all Animal Experiments in Europe" http://www.endeuanimaltests.org/ Now political pressure is needed to encourage EU legislators to do everything they can to maximise non-animal replacement efforts. Contact your MEPs and urge them to use the revision process of Directive 86/609/EEC as an opportunity to improve the Standards of Animal Welfare in European Laboratories and make replacing with Alternatives a priority. For contact details of your MEPs visit http://www.europarl.europa.eu If you want to do more:- Over 10,000 primates are used in experiments in Europe every year with the UK being Europe’s largest single user followed by France and Germany. Please write to the European Commission and ask them to ban primate tests. To help, a prepared letter can be found at http://www.eceae.org/saveprimates/en/action.html Please tell your friends and colleagues to do the same. More information on Animal Testing from http://www.peta.org/ http://www.buav.org For information on Revision of Directive 86/609/EEC http://ec.europa.eu/environment/chemicals/lab_animals/revision_en.htm Everyone can help and you can make a difference. Would you like to help build peace from the ground up?

If so please consider getting involved and passing on these links.

Help STOP ANOTHER WAR in the Middle East

It is clear that we cannot rely on politicians to stop a new war against Iran.  The only force that will stop an attack is a massive international grassroots movement of opposition.
NOW is the time for activists from across the globe to sign on to a call from Stop War on Iran  (
http://stopwaroniran.org/statement.shtml) saying, "We urge an immediate end to Washington's campaign of sanctions, hostility, and falsehood against the people of Iran. We oppose any new U.S. aggression against Iran. We need funds for human needs, not endless war for empire."
Every message signed will go automatically to members of every top congressional committee, the Bush Administration, the UN Security Council and to the major corporate media. Together let's make out voices heard - NOW!
Stop War on Iran Campaign's activists and organizers have held teach-ins and forums across the U.S.  We have marched in antiwar demonstrations with Stop War on Iran placards and banners. We have distributed thousands of Stop War on Iran broadsheets and collected tens of thousands of petition signatures.
But we must do more and we need your help to do it.  Here's how you can help:
* Sign the petition now, located at
http://stopwaroniran.org/petition.shtml.
* Download the petition from
http://stopwaroniran.org/petition.pdf.  Take copies to your school, workplace, union hall, church or mosque, community center, etc.
* Help get the word out.  Pass the word along to your email lists.
* Donate - Help us with the enormous expenses of organizing meetings and rallies, printing leaflets, placards, and banners, and producing educational material.  You can donate online at

The Declaration of Peace calls upon Americans to take action, to learn the facts, and reject the propaganda about the need for an attack on Iran. We urge people to immediately begin organizing locally to counter the disinformation about the alleged Iranian threat -- which is exactly like the false allegations the Bush Administration used to attack Iraq. Remember there were no Iraqi weapons of mass destruction found after the invasion!
*ARTICLE:  Demonizing the Iranian president and making his visit to New York seem controversial are all part of the neoconservative push for yet another war:
http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2007/09/24/ahmadinejad/
We call upon Americans to demand congressional hearings about the supposed Iranian threat. Demand that Congress repeal the authority it gave President Bush to wage an open-ended war on terrorism which has led to catastrophe in Iraq, and threatens to violate Iran.
The Declaration of Peace also calls upon people to contact local news organizations to comprehensively cover this issue so that a healthy and open debate can occur about the Bush Administration's assertions about Iran.
The Declaration of Peace believes the violent pronouncements and warmongering by the Bush Administration run counter to the Comprehensive Peace Plan for Iraq:
http://declarationofpeace.org/campaign-updates/comprehensive-peace-plan-for-iraq-september-4-2
Furthermore, a military attack on Iran will lead to further regional destabilization and ever-expanding war.
Therefore, it is imperative that We, The People must act together to prevent an attack on Iran.

KEEP BLACKWATER USA  OUT of Southern CALIFORNIA
Terrifying.  That is perhaps the most appropriate word to use in describing the menace that is Blackwater USA -- the private "security" firm that just murdered 17 innocent Iraqis, sending another 24 to the hospital, in a rampage on the streets of Baghdad.
Blackwater, the same private firm of paid thugs whose incompetence cost the lives of American troops in Fallujah in 2004, now wants to build a base on California's border to train mercenaries.
The consequences are ominous: Imagine Blackwater "defending" our border with Mexico in a vigilante action. Or providing emergency "security" to urban areas in California after a natural disaster.
No way. No Blackwater. Not in California. Not in America. The security of California and our citizens is at stake. That's the message that needs to be heard -- loud and clear -- by Senator Dianne Feinstein and Senator Barbara Boxer.
Help keep "Blackwater" out of southern California!!

Update on the Case of Maher Arar October 25, 2007 5:37 PM

One of my friends says that I can be a pitbull when I feel passionate about a story. The case of Maher Arar is one of those story. I have been following this story since I first learned of it in Sept. of 2006. This case everything that is undemocratic and inhumane about the practice of extraordinary rendition.

I was so moved by Maher Arar's story that I started a petition in Oct 2006 asking the US Dept of Justice to formally apologize to Mr. Arar and his family. Maybe now that Gonzo is gone there is hope that this will done. But if this does not happen during the Bush/Cheney regime I will hound the next administration until they do the right thing. I've update the petition and it can be found here .

So now I'll get down from my and update on the news.

Help Stop Cruelty to Animals in China October 07, 2007 2:05 PM

TO: All People Who Care There has been much attention on the trade in cat and dog fur recently. This is an issue that has struck a chord with consumers and politicians alike, reflecting a widespread repugnance at the idea of wearing the skin and fur of companion animals. Investigations by animal welfare organisations have revealed the suffering caused to millions of animals by this trade. Many cats and dogs are killed inhumanely in countries such as China where there is little or no animal welfare legislation. The European Parliament has finally adopted a Regulation to ban the import into the EU of cat and dog fur. The move ends many years of campaigning by animal welfare organisations and politicians to end a trade which causes terrible animal suffering. The ban will apply from 31 December 2008. The Ban will not stop the fur trade, only in Cats and Dogs, but the barbaric treatment can be stopped. The offending countries must improve welfare standards for all animals if it wants to do business with Europe. They must provide resources to help the Fur producers to find alternative incomes which do not involve animal cruelty. This will encourage investment from developed countries who can also help. Please keep the pressure up and do what you can to help. Contact your own governments to put political pressure on the offending countries. Top Ten Ways To Support Our Planet September 26, 2007 2:04 PM

Aloha Friends,

There has been a variety of discussions here, from protecting human rights to protecting animals and plants. It is recognized that our planet is constantly in a balancing act and Earth is unique and diverse. She provides us with air to breathe, water to drink and food to eat. While we have benefited from her bounty, many have laid waste to the land. Earth College is putting together a "Top Ten Ways To Support Our Planet" list to be published in November. We are asking you to name three things that we could each do in our daily lives to Support Our Planet. You can check the results at earthcollege.org/topten.

Please take a moment to complete this brief survey. Your response is greatly appreciated.

Protect Tibet against Human Rights Violations

This petition of mine still requires ~160 signatures. Now is the perfect time for it!

Petition text:
Dear Secretary-General Ban,

We, the undersigned, beseech you to help improve the situation of Tibetans, as well as of other groups suffering Human Rights violations in China, as shall be laid out here.

The People's Republic of China are signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which states the following:

Article 6
1. Every human being has the inherent right to life. This right shall be protected by law. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his life
2. In countries which have not abolished the death penalty, sentence of death may be imposed only for the most serious crimes in accordance with the law in force at the time of the commission of the crime

Article 7
No one shall be subjected to torture
or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment

Article 9
1. Everyone has the right to liberty and security of person. No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest or detention.
Anyone who is arrested shall be informed, at the time of arrest, of the reasons for his arrest and shall be promptly informed of any charges against him.

Article 18

1. Everyone shall have the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion. This right shall include freedom to have or to adopt a religion or belief of his choice
2. No one shall be subject to coercion which would impair his freedom to have or to adopt a religion or belief of his choice

Article 19
1. Everyone shall have the right to hold opinions without interference.
2. Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of his choice.

Each of these Articles has been and is being violated in numerous cases, as for example in the cases of:
-Jamyang Dhondup, Dhargay Gyatso and two other unidentified monks, who were arrested on suspicion of pasting bills calling for "freedom inTibet". The monks where arrested from their monastery on the ground of suspicion. Their whereabouts remain unknown.
- Lobsang Khedrup and Gyalpo were sentenced to 11 years' prison term for hoisting of a banned Tibetan national flag. Both are now imprisoned; their family members were not informed about their arrest for almost a year.

This Information is according to the Tibetan Centre For Human Rights And Democracy and Human Rights Watch. Similar cases have occurred in great number, especially since the "Strike Hard" campaign of 1996. Although it was officially withdrawn on July 1996, it remained in practice in Tibet as "Patriotic Re-education" campaign.
According to the Tibetan Centre For Human Rights And Democracy, 11,383 monks and nuns have been expelled from Tibet since that time. There are also numerous reports about arbitrary death sentences as well as torture, all of which do contradict the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Yet, it is the second time in three years, that a resolution to seek condemnation of China's human rights record was not sponsored.

We, the undersigned, beseech you to urge the members of the United Nations to finally sponsor a resolution against China to put light on Human Rights violations and to finally improve the situation of groups suffering suppression and arbitrary Human Rights violation.

Yours respectfully,

Please sign here

The Tibetans will thank you very much!

CAMPAIGN FOR THE GREEK FORESTS AND WILD ANIMALS September 04, 2007 12:09 PM

As you may be aware, the worst forest fire in more than a decade ravaged some 3,000 hectares of Mount Parnitha, one of the few oases of green in Attica's concrete jungle. Mount Parnitha was crucial for the climate of the city. More than 300 fires have broken out in Greece at the end of June 2007, fueling speculation that some were the work of arsonists. For more information read also the BBC news: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6252676.stm We kindly request from you as citizens of this World to: 1. JOIN our PROTEST against the burning of Greek forests and their wild life; 2. DEMAND from your Embassies in Greece to push the Greek Government for action; 3. PROTEST at the Greek Embassy in your country; 4. DEMAND from the Greek Government to take responsibility for their CRIMINAL NEGLECT and lack of action. HOW TO HELP US: Please take the time to write a letter or send an email to: 1. ASK the Greek Government and the Greek Parliament to assume their responsibilities for the criminal failure to put the fires down in a timely manner; 2. DEMAND from the Greek Government and the Greek Parliament to organise ASAP an effective action plan to stop other similar destructions and to apply reforestation for the destroyed areas and care for the wild life that has survived. 3. Sign the petition : protect Forests in Greece here >> http://www.petitiononline.com/grfires/petition.html Please send your letters/emails to the Greek National Tourism Offices in your country, the Greek Embassies in your country, your Embassies in Greece, the Greek Government and the European Parliament. Dear Sir/ Madam: I am writing to you in order to express my anger at the recent forest fires in Greece. Three NATURA 2000 areas were gravely affected ( GR1420006, GR1430001 and GR3000001 , or Oros Mavrovouni, Oros Pilio and Paraktia Thalassia Zoni and Oros Parnitha respectively). Specialists agree that damage is almost irreversible. According to the local press, the areas were not properly monitored, and the local authorities are woefully unprepared to deal with the disaster or its aftermath. As you have repeatedly stressed , the responsibility for the implementation of European environmental legislation lies mainly with the member states. However, it is also the Commission's responsibility to ensure that Community law is implemented and applied correctly. In addition, you have also recognized the unique cultural and ecological value of Mediterannean nature (e.g., by launching initiatives such as Horizon 2020), as well as its vulnerability to climate change (e.g., in the recent technical report No 7/2005 "Vulnerability and adaptation to climate change in Europe"). Therefore, I would like to draw your attention to the inability and/or unwillingness of Greek authorities to effectively enforce the relevant EU legislation (such as the Council Directive 92/43/EEC of 21 May 1992 on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora), and encourage you to consider the possibility of instigating infringement proceedings against Greece. Please Help Support a BAN on Primate Testing in Europe August 22, 2007 10:21 PM

To: All European Citizens who care about Animals This is a critical time. The European Commission (EC) is currently revising the law - known as Directive 86/609 - that governs animal experiments across Europe. 86/609 is a hugely powerful Directive that has power of life and death over millions of animals across the continent - setting out minimum standards for how and whether animals can be used in experiments. A staggering ten million animals are used in outdated and wasteful experiments in European laboratories every year. The Directive is supposed to ensure “the protection of animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes” but the huge numbers show that it’s just not doing that. There is a real possibility that with enough support the EC will ban all primate tests as part of the revised law. Written Declaration 40/2007 urges the European Parliament to use the revision process of Directive 86/609/EC as an opportunity to establish a timetable for replacing the use of all primates in scientific experiments with alternatives. The Declaration will fall on 7th September and the signatures of half the MEPs in the Parliament is needed by then. If you care about animals visit the following website to urge them to sign Written Declaration 40/2007. http://www.navs.org.uk/take_action/39/0/885/ If you want to do more:- Please write to the European Commission and ask them to ban primate tests. To help, a prepared letter can be found at http://www.eceae.org/saveprimates/en/action.html The address is:- Mr. Stavros Dimas Commissioner for Environment European Commission B-1049, Brussels, Belgium Please tell all your friends and family to do the same. ALERT! Stop the MURDER and CAPTURE of DOLPHINS April 19, 2007 2:43 PM

Wild Thing! -raising awareness & promoting petitions for wild animals

STOP THE MURDER AND CAPTURE OF DOLPHINS !

Protect the Dolphins

Dear friends,

We have always found dolphins to be amazing creatures, they have been subjects of works of art, literature, and myth. Dolphins are highly intelligent animals, some think they are more intelligent than humans, which is why their communication methods have mystified and baffled.

Dolphins are friendly, sociable animals who enjoy companionship. They live as families, look after each others young, they love to interact  and play.

Dolphins see man as a friend, they follow boats and allow themselves to be approachable. There have been reports of Dolphins saving humans who have found themselves in trouble at sea.

AND WHAT DO HUMANS DO IN RETURN ?

Some humans are happy to capture dolphins, tear them away from their families, exhibit them for so called pleasure, confine them so that people can pay to swim with them.

For conservation ? For the welfare of the Dolphin ?

There are reports that during the capture many of the Dolphins will die, those that survive face a life in captivity. There is not enough space here to debate what captivity does to a highly intelligent animal torn away from its family, here is a link for further reading.

http://library.thinkquest.org/17963/index-1.shtml

A member of Care2, Maureen  , has raised an alert against a plan to capture dolphins for captivity

http://www.care2.com/c2c/share/detail/344314

and has raised a petiion to stop this,

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/784972690

Raised nearly a month ago this Petition has only raised 213 signatures !

Is this really the respect we give dolphins, are we really willing to turn our backs in their hour of need ?

EIGHTY percent of Panamanians are opposed to the proposed capture of wild dolphins for captivity,

http://www.thepanamanews.com/pn/v_13/issue_07/news_01.html

Naomi A. Rose, Ph.D., Marine Mammal Scientist, Treaty Law, Oceans and Wildlife Protection, Humane Society International, has voiced her objection to these plans in many areas,

Dear friends, support Maureen, the people of Panama, and the Humane Society International.

Petition to US Senate Against Cluster Bombs March 30, 2007 12:51 PM

Modern weapons in general create horrifying experiences for civilians caught in the line of fire. But some weapons continue to kill and maim innocent people for months or years after the conflict has ended. Cluster bombs, which release thousands of bomblets over a large area, are one such weapon. Due to high “dud” rates, many bomblets sit unexploded near homes, playgrounds, and farms until someone triggers their deadly blast.

Senator Diane Feinstein has introduced legislation to restrict the use and sale of cluster bombs. We plan to deliver this petition next week. Can you add your name and help spread the word?

Urge UN to pass "Declaration of Human Responsibilities" March 04, 2007 3:57 AM

In 2008 the United Nations will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the "Declaration of Human Rights". What few people are aware of is September 2007 will also be the 10th anniversary of the signing of the "Declaration of Human Responsibility" by the Inter-Action Council, a group of dozens of former heads of states from around the world; including Helmutt Schmidt of Germany, and Jimmy Carter of the USA. The Inter-Action Council voluntarily convenes every year to propose strategic initiatives to help bring peace and prosperity to all the world's people.

The United Nations has not yet brought the Human Responsibilities Document up for vote, largely due to objections from major western governments, including the United States.
In essence what it calls for is that in addition to guaranteeing human rights, it should also be the responsibility of every nation in the world, especially those with the greatest resources to, among other things, take an equal responsibility in ensuring that poverty, inequality of opportunity, and human misery is minimized.

The introductory comments of the Declaration says it best:

" It is time to talk about human responsibilities...

Globalization of the world economy is matched by global problems, and global problems demand global solutions on the basis of ideas, values and norms respected by all cultures and societies. Recognition of the equal and inalienable rights of all the people requires a foundation of freedom, justice and peace - but this also demands that rights and responsibilities be given equal importance to establish an ethical base so that all men and women can live peacefully together and fulfil their potential. A better social order both nationally and internationally cannot be achieved by laws, prescriptions and conventions alone, but needs a global ethic. Human aspirations for progress can only be realised by agreed values and standards applying to all people and institutions at all times...

...The following draft of human responsibilities seeks to bring freedom and responsibility into balance and to promote a move from the freedom of indifference to the freedom of involvement. If one person or government seeks to maximise freedom but does it at the expense of others, a larger number of people will suffer. If human beings maximise their freedom by plundering the natural resources of the earth, then future generations will suffer.

The initiative to draft a Universal Declaration of Human Responsibilities is not only a way of balancing freedom with responsibility, but also a means of reconciling ideologies, beliefs and political views that were deemed antagonistic in the past. The proposed declaration points out that the exclusive insistence on rights can lead to endless dispute and conflict, that religious groups in pressing for their own freedom have a duty to respect the freedom of others. The basic premise should be to aim at the greatest amount of freedom possible, but also to develop the fullest sense of responsibility that will allow that freedom itself to grow.

The InterAction Council has been working to draft a set of human ethical standards since 1987. But its work builds on the wisdom of religious leaders and sages down the ages who have warned that freedom without acceptance of responsibility can destroy the freedom itself, whereas when rights and responsibilities are balanced, then freedom is enhanced and a better world can be created."  09-01-1997

Read the entire declaration at http://www.interactioncouncil.org/ .

Then please go to the following Care2 petition site to support this "Declaration of Human Responsibilities" : http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/365198357

Many thanks and please feel free to spread the word and post this petition link on other peace/non-violence web sites you belong to as it is my hope to get at least 60,000 signatures by the time the 10th anniversary in September comes around!

By now you’ve no doubt heard the news that the Bush administration has conceded that the judicial branch has a role in overseeing surveillance by the NSA.

Yesterday's extraordinary reversal by the administration, which we greet with skepticism — came just two weeks before our ACLU v. NSA hearing in a federal court of appeals and one day before the Attorney General was to testify before Congress. This shift is a sure sign that the determination of the ACLU and supporters like you is starting to pay off.

It has been your support, your phone calls and your voice that have helped the ACLU stand resolute against an out-of-control executive branch for the past five years.

But our work isn't finished. With the president's State of the Union message to Congress just days away, we must keep the pressure on to make sure these abuses of power stop, and are never repeated again. Please sign our petition to Move Freedom Forward today.

Many questions remain before we can take this move as a real change in policy. And the last thing we should do is let an ambiguous concession exempt the Bush administration from the intense congressional scrutiny that our democracy demands.

Make no mistake: this is an important step in our efforts to restore our lost liberties. To make sure this is just one of many victories throughout 2007, it’s absolutely essential that you add your voice to our Move Freedom Forward petition today.

Our work must continue, and your help is urgently needed to send Congress the message that we will not retreat.  Today’s hearing with Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is the first real test to see if the new Congress will conduct meaningful oversight — a test it must not fail.

Let's make it clear that we won't rest until we've restored respect for the Constitution and won back the freedoms that define our nation.  Please continue to stand with us and in 2007 together we will:

1. Restore habeas corpus and due process
2. End torture in secret prisons
3. Stop rampant spying on innocent Americans
4. Fix the Patriot Act and bring it in line with the Constitution

Right now is our best chance in years to end this lawless activity and bring this sad chapter in civil liberties to a speedy close. Please add your name to our Move Freedom Forward petition and add your voice to this demand today. We'll be sending this message to Congress next week to demand action on these critical issues.

On January 23, President Bush will deliver the State of the Union address and Congress will be wrapping up its first hundred hours of business.  Before the president steps to the podium, we want to make sure that tens of thousands of people have signed our petition and resolved to Move Freedom Forward in 2007. So, once you’ve signed, please take a moment to ask your friends and family to sign on as well.

Thank you for standing with us.

Sincerely,
Anthony D. Romero

anonymous Affirmation of Nuclear Freedom January 02, 2007 1:47 PM

Abolition 2000 is a worldwide network working for a global treaty to eliminate nuclear weapons.
World Court Project UK invites you to sign an Affirmation of Nuclear Freedom.
Nuclear weapons do not make us secure. On the contrary, they are about insecurity, doubt and fear. Opinion polls show that most people want to live in a world free from the nuclear threat.

Sign the Affirmation online in English (scroll down for links to other languages)

This hope has the backing of law. In 1968 the world's governments signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) which promised to abolish these weapons. In 1996 the World Court confirmed that this was a legal obligation. In 2000 the US, Russia, France, China, and the UK pledged to eliminate their nuclear arsenals.

These solemn pledges are not being kept. Thousands of nuclear weapons are still ready to be used at a moment's notice, but too many diplomats and politicians are not listening to us, the people of the world. Negotiations haven't even started.

In May 2005, nearly 2,000 members of citizens' groups around the world travelled to New York. The occasion was the five-yearly NPT Review Conference where official delegates from 153 countries gathered to discuss the vital issues of nuclear non-proliferation, possible nuclear terrorism, and disarmament.

That was the idea. In the event the United States (ably supported by the UK) and Iran deployed ingenious blocking moves in their own self-interest. Delegates such as those from New Zealand and Canada produced positive ideas for a way forward, but the big sticks wielded by a few states meant that the Conference failed to craft any real decisions. Then they all went home.

It is easy to point the finger at a few diplomats and politicians who are not listening to us, the ordinary people of the world, who want freedom from the nuclear threat. But we are talking about a failure of humanity itself. The dismal outcome of the Review Conference underscores the need for the rest of us to find other ways of having our hopes taken seriously. Mayor Akiba of Hiroshima pointed out in his open letter to President of the Conference, "disappointment does not equal discouragement" and that we therefore need "careful consideration of new ways forward". .

So World Court Project UK is not discouraged. We continue to oppose nuclear weapons not merely because they are useless, costly and dangerous, but because they violate the shared values which we believe the law must reflect. No political or national purpose could so important that it would be worth holding the peoples of the world hostage to these terrible engines of industrial killing.

The simple wording of the Affirmation of Freedom from Nuclear Weapons which we shall be asking people to sign over the next few years reflects this conviction:
"I do not accept that nuclear weapons can protect me, my country, or the values I stand for".

This statement rejects the very thought of deploying nuclear weapons which may actually be used one day. It means that each person, with each signature, has asserted their personal freedom from the tyranny of this thought.

Ask Congress to SUPPORT Core GLOBAL HEALTH Programs in 2007
Let your Congressperson know you care about funding for the poor’s health needs.  During the first week of January, Congress will be drafting a bill to fund US Government programs overseas.  Congress must
keep child health, maternal health, family planning, and infectious disease programs a top priority as the year-long funding bill takes shape.  Although 2007 appropriations will be constrained, Congress must
demonstrate that it values global health programs that save lives and reflect enduring American values.  Please call your Members of Congress and ask them to protect and fund, at the Senate’s suggested levels, global health programs in the New Year. [See beginning for toll-free telephone numbers.]

“Hello, my name is _____________, and I am a voter from _____________.
I know that US-funded health programs overseas save the lives of many of the world’s poorest people.  These programs also build goodwill for the United States.  When you consider the fiscal year 2007 funding
resolution, please remember to protect and increase funding for global health programs.  Thank you.”

URGENT!! SAVE the ANTI-POVERTY FUNDING!!
Unless we take immediate action, a billion dollars in anti-poverty funding you helped secure for 2007 will be lost.
While Congress took time to pass important trade benefits for Africa in the closing hours of their last session, they failed to pass funding bills for the 2007 fiscal year. The result is that any funding increases that we secured in 2006 are in jeopardy – as are the lives and livelihoods of millions of the world’s poorest people who were counting on this funding. Please take a moment to ask Congress to protect anti-poverty funding and save lives.

Let's Give ALICE WALTON Something to Look At - ARTISTIC MESSAGE FOR HEALTH CARE NEEDED
This holiday season, while Wal-Mart continues to deny nearly half of its employees' children health care, Sam Walton's daughter Alice -- a billionaire heiress -- has her eyes on a $68,000,000 painting of a doctor treating a young boy.  So let's give her something to look at. What can you put together that best expresses the health care disaster Wal-Mart refuses to address? We'll take the best stuff and make sure the humbugs at Wal-Mart hear about it. Whether it's poetry, finger-painting or sculpture, give Alice the art she isn't looking for.

Nationwide Actions 'Declare Peace', Raise Pressure on Congress
by Haider Rizvi

NEW YORK - A nationwide civil disobedience campaign aiming to force the administration of President George W. Bush and the U.S. Congress to end the military occupation of Iraq is now in full swing.

Anti-war demonstrators block a gate to the White House in Washington, Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006, after marching in front of the White House protesting the war in Iraq. Park police officers arrested 34 of the demonstrators after they refused to leave. (AP Photo/Ron Edmonds)
More than 500 peace groups and justice organizations from all over the United States have joined the "Declaration of Peace," a week-long comprehensive campaign that calls for a prompt timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

Those who signed the Declaration this week pledged to hold demonstrations, rallies, marches, and vigils in hundreds of cities across the country, which will continue until next Thursday.

The protests have started at a time when the campaign for upcoming Congressional elections is getting into top gear and many lawmakers are preparing to go back to their home states for six weeks of intense campaigning.

On Thursday, police in Washington, DC arrested more than 30 activists who tried to deliver copies of the Declaration to the Bush administration as part of their pledge to get involved in actions of civil disobedience.

Prominent among those arrested in front of the White House include Father Joseph Nangle, co-director of Franciscan Missions, James Winkler, general secretary of the United Methodist Church, and Leslie Cagan, national coordinator of the United for Peace and Justice activist group.

"The breath and depth of the actions taking place this week are a testament to the growing sentiment of the people of this country against the occupation of Iraq," said Cagan in a statement before her arrest.

"As citizens and people of faith, we must be our country's conscience," added Reverend Lennox Yearwood of the Hip Hop Caucus, who was also arrested for taking part in the White House action.

Like Yearwood, scores of church leaders who have joined the anti-war campaign believe that their actions will give the government "the moral courage to set a firm deadline to end the occupation of Iraq."

Activists say they have organized more than 350 actions of civil disobedience in all parts of the country, including in unlikely places such as Lincoln, Nebraska; Fayetteville, North Carolina; Houston, Texas; Des Moines, Iowa; Little Rock, Arkansas; and Cincinnati, Ohio.

Though the campaign is heavily dominated by faith-based groups, many lawmakers, former military leaders, and veterans are also taking an active part in the protests.

"I have seen with my own eyes the human cost of this occupation," said Kelly Dougherty, cofounder of Iraq Veterans against the War. "It is my duty to my fellow soldiers to end the escalation of violence."

Though Democratic Party officials have made no call for participation in the demonstration, this week some lawmakers publicly endorsed the Declaration. They include Rep. Earl Blumenauer (OR), Danny Davis (IL), Sam Farr (CA), Chaka Fattah (PA), Barbara Lee (CA), John Lewis (GA), Jan Schakowsky (IL), and Lynn Woolsey (CA).

"As a participant in the civil rights movement, I have confronted violence with nonviolence. I have been arrested over 40 times. I have been beaten and left bloody in the streets to die," said Lewis after signing the Declaration.

"And what I came to realize is that our strongest weapons as a nation are not bombs and missiles," he added. "Our strongest defense is the power of our ideas. It is what we believe about democracy and respect for human dignity."

In addition to a prompt timetable for withdrawal of troops, the Declaration calls for "closure of bases; a peace process for security, reconstruction, and reconciliation; and a shift of funding for war to meeting human needs."

Only weeks after the Supreme Court declared illegal the Bush Administration’s military commissions — which were set up to try and convict detainees held indefinitely without basic due process protections — the White House and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales are pushing Congress on an illegal proposal that violates the Supreme Court’s decision and abandons the rule of law.

The Bush plan would ask Congress to rubber-stamp these illegal commissions, effectively reversing the Supreme Court decision.  It would also violate the Geneva Conventions, which were ratified by Congress, taking away the most basic process protections from detainees who are being held indefinitely.  Don’t let the White House strong-arm Congress and the Supreme Court.

Go to http://action.aclu.org/tribunals to send a message to your Senators and Representative that the United States must abide by the Geneva Conventions and uphold American values of due process.

Specifically, the White House proposal would:

    • Gut the enforceability of important Geneva Convention protections
    • Allow the use of evidence obtained through coercion, including horrific abuse
    • Sanction convictions based on secret evidence
    • Bar a defendant from being present at his or her own trial
    • Allow the use of hearsay evidence

During Senate hearings yesterday, even the Pentagon’s top military lawyers agreed that no one should be convicted based on secret evidence and that every defendant has the right to be present at his own trial. They also made clear that coerced evidence — such as “confessions” beaten out of witnesses — has no place in any trial.

Your Senators and Representatives need to hear from you that Americans want the rule of law restored. Tell them that any legislation on criminal trials of detainees being held indefinitely must protect the Geneva Conventions and maintain basic due process protections respected by all Americans.

    Take action now at http://action.aclu.org/tribunals

Tell Congress that it should not take away the protections of the Geneva Conventions and basic American values like due process when trying detainees being held indefinitely by the federal government.

Thank you for taking action today.

    Sincerely,

    Signature

    Director, Washington Legislative Office

You may have read headlines calling the Cheney-Specter bill on surveillance oversight a "compromise." But make no mistake, this deal is nothing short of a complete capitulation to the Bush administration.

The bill includes legalized assaults on our civil liberties worse even than the sweeping powers ceded to the government by the Patriot Act, and would write into law what is now the administration's belief that the president can wiretap any American he wants without any check.

From the Supreme Court to people on the street, America is starting to wake up to the Bush administration's abuse of power. Unfortunately, Congress hasn't gotten the message and is poised to rubber stamp a dangerous agenda that is doing real harm to our democracy.

Not only is Congress considering NSA "oversight" legislation that would hand the president vast new powers—only days after the Defense Department stated that it will comply with the Geneva Conventions regarding the treatment of detainees—a top Justice Department lawyer urged Congress to "ratify" the military commissions that the Supreme Court invalidated two weeks ago.

The headlines are full of White House spin claiming that Senator Arlen Specter's (R-PA) bill on surveillance is a successful compromise between Congress and the White House. Of course, Senator Specter would like you to believe he is taking a stand on the Bush's administration's actions because he knows that is what most Americans want Congress to do. But in reality these ill-advised proposals give the president a blank check to spy on Americans without a warrant and without mandatory judicial review of his actions.

You can help us get out the truth about this bill and the dangers it poses to our basic rights. Please take a few minutes to contact your newspaper right now. Tell them that this "compromise" actually compromises our rights and gives a blank check to the president.

It is very important that the American people know that the bill that is supposed to rein in surveillance of innocent citizens actually includes:

  • Legalization of the president's program of warrantless surveillance on Americans, a program that is illegal under current law and unconstitutional.

  • A diminished role for the court that oversees the NSA's warrantless domestic spying, making oversight by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) optional -- and we know that when this administration doesn't believe in getting court warrants even when required; making them "optional" is making them non-existent.

  • A new, unconstitutional process for challenging surveillance, via a secret appeals court composed of judges hand-picked solely by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, who supports expansive presidential powers.

  • An information blackout by the Executive Branch against the Congress or our courts when it comes to the names and number of Americans monitored by the spying program. Without any oversight, countless journalists, lawyers, hotel clerks and others will inevitably be swept into round-the-clock monitoring of their phone conversations, indefinitely.

We cannot allow the Executive Branch to weasel out of obeying the Supreme Court and federal law; and Congress is overdue in asserting and affirming its role of keeping the president in check and reining in the president's sweeping interpretation of power.

The ACLU will be keeping the pressure on all summer and into the fall, and we'll be calling on you and everyone across America who cares about our liberties to join us in the fight.

How these stories are characterized in the press plays an important role in our success. So, please take a few minutes right now to write your local paper with our easy-to-use letter to the editor tool.

As always, thank you for standing with us. It is absolutely essential that every one of us rallies to protect the freedoms that define our democracy.

An innovative new bill, the GROWTH (Global Resources and Opportunities for Women to Thrive) Act of 2006, has just been introduced in Congress. The GROWTH Act would make huge advances in women's economic empowerment and create positive changes for millions of women in developing countries around the world.

Please seize this opportunity to make those changes a reality by urging your Representative to support the GROWTH Act. Click here to contact your member of Congress about this opportunity to advance women's economic empowerment now.

Investing in women is one of the surest routes to ending poverty and strengthening communities in the developing world.

Decades of research and experience have shown that women living in poverty reinvest any extra income they have in their kids, creating a positive cycle of growth for the family. Greater economic opportunitiy for women means their daughters are more likely to go to school, their babies are more likely to survive infancy, and their family is more likely to eat nutritious meals. Women with more economic opportunities are also less vulnerable to trafficking and HIV/AIDS, and have more options in the face of violence or abuse, not to mention a greater ability to control the number and spacing of their children.

Join us in making these positive changes a reality by urging your Representative to support the GROWTH Act - click here to send your message.

The new GROWTH Act would remove many of the barriers that currently prevent women from participating actively in their countries’ economies by:

    • Promoting women’s ability to start and grow businesses.
    • Enhancing women’s land and property rights.
    • Increasing women’s access to higher quality employment and improving the wages and working conditions of women-dominated jobs.
    • Ensuring that trade agreements benefit women living in poverty.

The GROWTH Act is the culmination of two years of research and advocacy by the Women’s Edge Coalition with the support of Congressional leaders, as well as more than twenty organizations working with women living in poverty in the developing world.

Please click here now to urge your member of Congress to support this important new piece of legislation!

Once you've sent your letter, please help us spread the word about the GROWTH Act by clicking here to send a message to your friends, family, and co-workers asking them to join you in supporting women's economic empowerment worldwide by contacting their Representatives.

Thanks again for all of your help,

Should religious relief agencies have the right to choose their partnering agencies in other countries?

A government recommendation before the President calls for the U.S. Commerce Department to no longer grant licenses for humanitarian aid to the Cuban people that would go through the Cuban Council of Churches.

It may seem at first glance to be insignificant, but it has huge implications for religious freedom.  If the President approves this plan, then the U.S. government - not religious aid organizations - would reserve the right to decide which aid organizations abroad would be suitable partners in delivering supplies in times of emergency.

For example, if enacted, Church World Service (a relief agency with whom we partner regularly) would not be permitted to work with their long-established partners, the Cuban Council of Churches, to deliver humanitarian items during this hurricane season.

"That is an incredible intrusion into free exercise of religion,” said the Rev. Tony Kireopoulos, International Affairs chief at the National Council of Churches USA.

This recommendation must not be approved.  Help insure religious freedom in the United States by letting President Bush know you oppose any such attempts by the government to limit religious freedom.  Use this page to send a letter to President Bush.  A copy will be faxed to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Thank you for your help in this important matter. Visit our website for more information on this matter.  Blessings to you as always,

    Minimum Wage? July 01, 2006 8:29 AM

    ACTION PAGE: http://www.usalone.com/stacey/pnum339.php

Once again an increase in the Federal Minimum Wage has been blocked.
We all know that no family or even one person can live on the Federal
minimum wage of $5.15 per hour. The fact that it is still this low is
    disgraceful.

We, the voters of this country, must force all members of Congress to
understand that we cannot be fooled by political maneuvers or phony
dialogue about the proposed increases costing The USA jobs.  We must force
then, with our letters and words, to understand that WE, the voters in
their Districts and States, know their arguments don't hold water and
that people are being hurt everyday in America as a result of this
freezing Federal Minimum Wage while they give themselves fat pay increases.

Let both your Senators and your Congressional Representative know
exactly how disgusted you are by the blockage of a reasonable raise of the
Federal Minimum Wage on The Hill.  Only by knowing that you will
remember their final vote and exercise your power at the Ballot Box will they
begin to listen and pass this important bill.

    ACTION PAGE: http://www.usalone.com/stacey/pnum339.php

This alert is brought to you through the activism of Stacey Tallitsh,
running for the U.S. House in the 1st Congressional district, and one of
the leading progressive voices in the state of Louisiana.  Many of you
have already submitted his action page calling for the troops in Iraq
to start coming home now, a policy that is more surely correct with
every passing state of emergency in Baghdad.

Stacey has already produced his first call to action radio spot,
calling for an end of the obstinate occupation of Iraq, a military escapade
which has brought nothing but death and destruction to both their
country and our own.  With your help, Stacey wants to start running these
radio spots on his local stations as soon as possible, to build the
consensus to actually start bringing our brave troops home.  You can hear the
    new spot on this page.

Nobody can predict how a particular race will turn out.  But we know
that the spots we ran on impeachment had tremendous secondary impact, as
TWO other groups were inspired to run their own call to action ads on

are able to do so, please make whatever donation you can to continue
the stand we are taking on issue after issue.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed
to be ours, and forward this message to everyone else you know.

    Stop the President's Silent Vetoes

Under a radical new theory of presidential power, President Bush is
openly claiming the right to disobey any laws he doesn't agree with --
and Congress is letting him get away with it. Presidential signing
statements are nothing new -- but this President's open defiance of
    the law most certainly is.

Click here to tell your representative and senators that they MUST
hold Bush accountable under the law:

Senator McCain's bill prohibiting torture by our armed forces? It's
being ignored. Requirements that the Administration report to Congress
about seizures of records from libraries and bookstores? Ignored. A
law capping U.S. soldiers in Colombia at 800? They'll construe that
law as 'advisory in nature,' thank you very much.

Tell Congress to investigate the President's lawbreaking, express
their opposition publicly, hold oversight hearings, and use their
unique standing as lawmakers to sue:

These are just a few of the many medical conditions that scientists believe stem cell research could treat or even cure. The religious right is opposed to this life saving research. And they are holding our health hostage.

    Here's what's happening:

On May 24, 2005, the U.S. House of Representatives defied Tom DeLay, the White House and the religious right, passing legislation that increased public funding for stem cell research.

A year later, despite overwhelming public support and a bi-partisan coalition of senators, Majority Leader Bill Frist refuses to hold a vote in the Senate, caving instead to the religious right.

Take action and demand that Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist - Doctor Frist - stops pandering to the religious right and allows a vote on this crucial legislation today. Click here!

A broad-based and powerful peace and social justice movement is on the move! Millions of people poured into the streets a few weeks ago across America to protest the criminalization of undocumented immigrants, now at greater risk than ever before of detention and deportation. Imagine as a US citizen you are told that your undocumented parents might be incarcerated and deported. Recent bills have been introduced in both the House and the Senate aimed at creating a new enemy in America -- hardworking immigrants. And they could be your relatives.

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill that would, if passed into law: 1) expand the grounds of deportation; 2) use domestic military bases for immigration detention; 3) legalize the indefinite detention of non-citizens; 4) authorize local officers to enforce federal immigration laws; 5) erect a border fence; 6) enable Homeland Security agents to expel suspected foreigners indiscriminately; and 7) create a national identification system for all workers, among other measures. Recent passage of House Bill, H.R. 4437 criminalizes anyone providing assistance to undocumented immigrants.

No matter where you stand on U.S. immigration policy, what is currently being promoted by some of our elected officials is undeniably counter to the values of justice and equality. And it is exactly those values that we hold dear when we strive for a peaceful foreign policy. In order to promote its war policies based on fear and violence, the U.S. government relies on portraying immigrants of color, whether they be Iraqi, Afghani, Mexican or Salvadorian, as a security risk, and implying that their lives and rights are less valuable than those of U.S. citizens. If we wish to create a diverse movement for peace, we must confront both the foreign and domestic policies that create divisions between those who would be our sisters and brothers, and make peace with the millions of immigrants trying to eke out a life within the U.S. borders.

Recognizing these connections, leaders from diverse ethnic communities, labor, religious groups and anti-war groups have been standing together to call on Congress to respect the rights of immigrants. Now, in an unprecedented show of common ground, immigrants' rights activists will march together with the anti-war movement on April 29 in New York. On May 1 we will join actions for immigration reform and justice all over the country. Please join us! You can also click here to see what events are happening in your area, including the general boycott of work, school and shops.

We look forward to standing with our brothers and sisters in the immigrant community to work for policies that respect our values of fairness; provide a clear path to earned citizenship; make immigration safe, legal, and orderly; unite families; and ensure workplace and civil rights protections for everyone.

    Dear CIVIC supporter,

As the violence continues in Iraq and Afghanistan, ordinary men, women, and children are caught in the crossfire.

CIVIC is launching a week of advocacy including a photo campaign. By participating you are sending a message to victims of war and to our leaders that you care about the human cost of conflict.

It's simple: Write 'I Care' on a white piece of paper with black marker and have a friend snap a photo of you. We will post your photo along with hundreds of others. Together they will form a powerful visual of community and hope.

This photo campaign is not about being for or against the war in Iraq. It is a campaign of compassion. We believe that civilian casualties are the most tragic consequence of war. And each injury, destroyed home, and death should be given the weight it deserves.

Click here to upload your photo and add your voice to those around the world saying “I care.”

Thank you for your continued support,

    CIVIC

p.s. Visit our new website and invite your friends and family to participate in our "Week of Action"

As Americans, we are rightly concerned about the ongoing violence in Iraq and now, again, in Afghanistan, including the safety of our troops. Congress must also hear that we care about the countless civilians caught in the crossfire. The victims of these wars need and deserve our help to rebuild their lives.

Click here to send a message to your Representative.

A smart, compassionate response to the tens of thousands of families suffering in Iraq includes the support of the Iraq Community Action Program (ICAP). This humanitarian aid from the U.S. ensures that Iraqis harmed by the conflict receive the help they need. Widows receive small business loans and business training; children and orphans receive support; bombed homes are restored. Plus, this program rebuilds communities and civil society with the help of Iraqis themselves - creating a more stable future for their country.

Please send a message to Congress urging their support of the ICAP program in the 2007 budget.

Thank you for taking action on this important issue and please forward this message to your friends and family.

    In gratitude,
    Sarah & Marla B

Public Citizen Takes an Oath; the Energy Companies Wouldn't Dare

Acting on your behalf, Tyson Slocum, acting director of Public Citizen’s Energy Program, testified Wednesday, February 1, before the Senate Committee on the Judiciary. Tyson demanded to take an oath to tell the truth (oil company executives were not asked to take an oath -- a common practice -- in their recent appearance before Congress) and that's just what he did (see box to the right for more details).

Regarding the ongoing revelations of rampant corruption and of the recent profits announced by Exxon Mobil, he said: "The facts show that part of these record profits are the result of price-gouging. It is up to Congress and the White House to ignore the $55 million in campaign contributions they’ve received from the industry and step in to protect consumers."

Since the 1990s, more than 2,600 mergers have been approved in the U.S. petroleum industry, resulting in just a few companies controlling a significant amount of America’s gasoline, squelching competition and leading consumers to pay more at the pump. In addition, an increasing share of energy trading has been moving from regulated markets and into unregulated exchanges, allowing companies and hedge funds to escape federal oversight and more easily manipulate the energy market.

Unlike the president in his recent State of the Union address, Tyson took on the issue of reducing energy demand: "Billions of gallons of gasoline could be saved if significant fuel economy increases were mandated. There is a direct connection between the record profits enjoyed by oil companies and the record high prices Americans are paying for gasoline, home heating oil and natural gas."

    HUMAN RIGHTS DAY: DECEMBER 10th

    Torture

Help us honor this day by doing your part to help STOP TORTURE!

If you've watched the news recently, you've seen President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice declare that the United States does not torture prisoners.

Yet, the White House has threatened to veto legislation supported by 90 Senators and led by Republican John McCain -- a former POW who knows torture all too well.

Are you tired of the Administration saying one thing on the evening news and then backtracking behind the scenes?

When was the last time 90 U.S. Senators agreed on anything? Senator McCain and 89 U.S. Senators are doing the right thing.

Help support this stand on human rights.  Torture -- What is it good for? Absolutely nothing!

    ~ Sincerely,

The Citizens for Global Solutions Team
