Become an angel for animals September 17, 2007 5:08 PM

Be an Angel for Stray AnimalsWhen you see stray or injured cats or dogs on the street, please don’t pass them by—they need your help! Be prepared for animal emergencies by keeping a road-rescue kit in your car, including pull-tab cans of cat and dog food, a leash, a bandage for a muzzle (injured animals may try to bite out of fright), a collapsible cardboard cat carrier, and a towel or blanket. If you are unable to coax the animal to you, take down the exact location (including the street and cross street and any nearby landmarks) and a description of the animal and call animal control as soon as possible.

If you have an emergency situation and do not receive a response from your local humane society, dial 911. Never leave an animal in need!

Get Active for Animals!

Get Active for Animals! Dogs and cats may tug at our heartstrings, but despite all the love they give us, an estimated 4 to 6 million must be euthanized annually in the United States because there aren’t enough loving homes for them. Abandoned animals often become victims of road traffic, disease, starvation, or cruel people. Sometimes they are stolen by laboratory dealers or used as bait by dogfighters. Tragically, while millions of animals are killed for want of a good home, breeders churn out millions of animals each year. You can help keep dogs and cats from suffering from homelessness by promoting spaying and neutering.

Spay/Neuter Companion Animals—Ask Legislators to Make This Mandatory in Your Town or County
The single most important thing that we can do to save animals from all the suffering and death caused by their overpopulation is to spay and neuter them. Just one unaltered female cat and her offspring can produce an estimated 420,000 cats in only seven years. In six years, a female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies.

Ask Neighbors to Unchain Their Dogs—and Take Them Inside
Many dogs spend their entire lives in “solitary confinement,” trapped at the end of a chain or in a small pen, where they suffer through frightening thunderstorms, suffocating heat, and bitter cold. They are aching for friendship and are left without vital medical care. Learn more.

Adopt a Homeless Animal From a Shelter—Never From a Breeder or Pet Store
Did you know that puppies sold in pet shops typically come from nightmarish “puppy mills,” where dogs are forced to live in tiny, filthy, metal cages and they suffer from neglect, loneliness, boredom, and even disease? Females are treated like breeding machines, and their offspring are taken from them at a very early age, packed into crates, and shipped to dealers, often without adequate food, water, or ventilation. This separation breaks the hearts of both mother and puppy, and the customers who buy these puppies often find that they have diseases or congenital defects caused by inbreeding. Learn more.

Ask Your Legislators to Take Crimes Against Animals Seriously!
Animal abuse is not just the result of a minor personality flaw in the abuser but rather a symptom of a deep mental disturbance. Research in psychology and criminology shows that people who commit acts of cruelty to animals don’t stop there; many of
them move on to hurt their fellow humans. Learn more.

Spread the Word to Others!
One of the best ways to help is to encourage others to learn more and get active. Please recommend HelpingAnimals.com to your friends and family.

Man's Sacred Trust (Animals) : "Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission - to be of service to them wherever they require it" - St. Francis of Assisi

Love my dog January 25, 2008 4:32 PM

Hi everyone:  I am new to the group and site.  I have a dog named Bella and I am a 100% animal activist.  My little one doesn't want me to go anywhere without her.  As I had a condition that made it hard to do much, I kept her with me while she was growing up  Now I got better, and started college at 48 a couple of years ago.  I struggle with my distination when I finish.  I just love dogs so much, I saw a site on humane degree that deals also with stopping the inhumane treatment of dogs.  Anyone have any thoughts on this?   [ send green star]  [ accepted]

I agree, April. One should always be prepared. I always carry PETA's rescue kit in the car along with some canned pet food and bottles of water. The kit alone costs only $8 at www.PetaCatalog.com (ps. and they have a sale going on now, as well)

Ooooh, i know the feeling.  At this moment i still have three cats i recued.  One from a pet store, he was so sick, his eyes and nose full of puss, one who was left behind when its owner(do not like the word 'owner') moved to another place, and one who stumbled in the street where i am living, so skinny and in pain (probably hit by a car or worse).  The love and understanding you get from those animals is undescribable.

From the 13 cats, only 4 left.  My oldest one died last week, she was 17.  She was born in my house, like many did ( i was two times too late to "fix" the tom cats   )  Never put them to a shelter.  They all stayed with me.  Every time it breaks my heart when one of them crosses the bridge, but i can't live without a pet in the house.  Their love is pure!!!

What a wonderful thread with such great ideas on how to help injured animals and so many loving and caring people who have helped animals in their lives.   I feel so much love in here.   Thanks Tony for posting.

Great advice Tony.  I almost always carry something to feed a stray cat with if I come across one.  I'm glad Inge that you saved those three cats, especially the skinny one and the one with pus in it's eyes and nose (probably infection).  Hope they turned out all right.

I've saved quite a few cats in my life, not to mention turtles, snakes, squirrels, even insects, worms.  If we can be an angel to anything it's animals for they can't speak, nor understand humans very well, or bad things, and only need half a chance to live.  I have made quite a pact with animals and all living things for the last 15 yrs. or so and there's no feeling like it in the world!

good idea Tony.  i used to be a "pick-up" person (picked up injured animals & took them to emergency hosp) for the AzSPCA.  my neighbor made me a catch pole from a pipe with a cable tru it, worked great.

I always take home strays, even though oneof my dogs, Tiger Lily isn't too keen on the idea if it's another dog.  I find GOOD homes for them.  Fortunately the law here is tough about dogs wandering the streets, so not too many around. But can you credit the MP's dog was running down the road towards a very busy high street.  I rescued it, spent hours trying to find the owner, as she hadn't even bothered to change her registration!  some example!  Her excuse - she was busy! Yes, who isn't!
