I am member 202! I found you guys during my research of orcas on the Web. I am an artist living in Northern VA and have been sculpting and painting animals of every kind for the last ten years. I have always loved the creatures of the sea and I am working on a series of paintings centered on Marine mammals.
I am searching for accurate information on the anatomy and specifically muscle structure of Orcas. I can find tons of external information (one of the best was this group by the way!)but nothing on what's actually under that gorgeous shell!
Any help on sources would be greatly appreciated!
Look forward to exploring more of this group and Care2!
Thank you for the Thank You!.. I am happy to keep the news flooding in as I live in the San Juans.. and with resident pods and being a docent at the Whale Museum I have a pretty good handle at what is happening. So I am happy to keep posting Resident pod news.. etc... I can help in anyway possible. I hope you are having a Fabulous Day..
First I like to thank Raven for all her recent posts.
And to answer Claudi.. Yes this group needs a little cleaning.
Plus I did send you a reply to your earlier message so i'll bring it to the group now.
The Orca group does it best each day to aware of the issues at hand however you need to realize that in human nature people look the other way no matter how hard you try to resolve a situation...so keep posting THX
Claudia. ... I have a deep commitment to doing local community work... a lot of it is spent in the field.. iI have to vary this from week to week depending on my time and issues at hand, so yes at times I spend time away from the computer....
Since I live on the West Coast and you are Netherlands our perspectives will always varies on what needs to done on a global basis. As long we are doing our best... small changes do ripple out and reaches other people.... we are all connected.
I will see what I can do shortly and clean up the old threads.
Good Morning all...I just wanted to again, thankyou all for sharing this very special topic with eachother...I wanted to add some of my very mixed feelings regarding "Sea World" in Fla..USA..My family and I went down for a visit last December for X-mas vacation..and although the Orca show..starring "Shamu and his family"..was exciting and entertaining..I couldnt help but wonder how happy or unhappy some of these Orca's really were. One thing I did know for sure was that once again, thier enviorment seemed so small to me..These mamals are huge ..in need of vast spaces to navigate..Maybe its the "Freedom Fighter" in me..I guess I have always felt that even under the best care..animals ..were'nt meant to be caged..I dont go to zoo's..as I have always hated the sight of bars, walls and glass confining them..Even as a child I remember standing in front of the "Monkey House"..and noticing this great and beautiful Silver back Gorrilla..facing the corner of his concrete and glass encloser..as if to say.."Not today people..I just dont have it me anymore"..I could cry just remembering it..So I am posing this question.."If they are "Born" in captivity..Have we taken something from them..Are we able to breed "The call of the wild right out of them?"..Thanks for any thought and feelings on this delicate issue..Be Blessed my friends..Stacey

Thanx for the invite to this group..I have always loved this beautiful and "Oh So Smart" marine mamal.Years ago I followed the "Free Keiko..aka..Willy"story..It amazed me..When mankind pulls together ..we can truly make miracles happen..Keiko couldnt quite make it to complete and utter freedom..though I feel he lived out the remainder of his life in a much improved enviorment than the kiddie pool he was in when his very important story began. There has never been a case in recorded history of this mamal attacking any human being...which should serve as an important reminder to us that we are not the only inteligent life on this planet..We are not the only ones who think, love and feel..Thanks to all who share my profound respect for the Orca....Stacey

Where I live we see the Orca whales periodically. I am orginally from Newfoundland, Canada. The waters are both cold and warm which draws the Orca close to our province.
Thank you Larry, for letting me know of this group.
Attention members, please review action needed on our petitions and other alerts. We need to remain firm in our belief for biodiversty of our planet. Thank you for taking the time to read and helping our planet.
Yes Sam, if it's important, post it. Check with the other threads first both active and in the archives.
I have been quite busy these last several days We are up to 24 members now. I hope that we can all get together and keep each other informed on orca issues as well as other marine issues.
I would like to start a petition thread. Not just for Orcas but for all marine life. This would be somewhere everyone could post petitions, action alerts, articles etc.Would that be allowable?

I'm glad you started this group. I don't like it when I hear Orca's referred to as "Killer Whales." It makes me realize that some education needs to be done on the niches in ocean life.
