Tags:   Blog: NYSE Defies Animal Extremists... and Promotes Animal Cruelty   (PLEASE CLICK ON THE PETITION LINK AT THE END TO HELP) It looks like animal testing will continue for the time being, according to a UPI story by Shaun Waterman, which I've excerpted here: "NYSE defies animal extremists By SHAUN WATERMAN UPI Homeland and National Security Editor WASHINGTON, Dec. 29, 2006 (UPI) -- The decision by the New York Stock Exchange to list a medical research company targeted by animal rights protestors on a new electronic market where shares can be traded anonymously is being hailed as a victory by animal researchers. Life Sciences Research, Inc., a Princeton, N.J.-based medical research firm that specializes in animal experiments announced just before Christmas that it had settled a dispute with the NYSE, and would be listed on the exchange's new all-electronic trading platform called Arca. "We're thrilled," the company's Chief Financial Officer Richard Michaelson told United Press International. "It is a totally anonymous trading environment," he said of the new electronic exchange. "In our situation that is a big advantage." Life Sciences Research, Inc., is the parent of U.K.-based Huntingdon Life Sciences, and has been targeted on both sides of the Atlantic by animal rights activists organized under the name Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty, or SHAC..." However, 'business' for Life Sciences Research, Inc. could turn very, sour very fast... and millions of frightened, defenseless, innocent animals currently slated for repeated, often excruciatingly painfull procedures, violent treatment, and hopeless lonely deaths could suddenly be free... if The Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research, and other animal and consumer protection groups have anything to say about it!!! "The European legislation governing EU animal experiments (Directive 86/609/EEC), is now some 20 years old, desperately out of date and in urgent need of review. The European Commission has recognised this and a review is now underway. The Commission has also launched an 'Action Plan' that explicitly states "The final aim is to replace animal experiments with methods not entailing the use of an animal." The revision of Directive 86/609/EEC provides an unprecedented opportunity for the European Union to increase efforts to replace all animal experiments through carefully targeted and co-ordinated research to develop, validate and implement non-animal methods. The details described of the treatment and handling of this poor creature and the grossly torturous procedures performed on him are sadly typical of what the vast majority of animals in laboratories endure every minute of every day! Isn't it time we ALL spoke out against such horrific cruelty? Canadian Citizens click here.                                        "What if some huge, physically overpowering people held you captive and did painful things to you each day? What if they made fun of you when you screamed out of fear, cursed you for no reason, and threw you - literally threw you - back into a cage when they were finished roughing you up? Wouldn't you freeze in terror every time the door opened? Heart racing, you might wish to be invisible to your captors, but you never would be. The anxiety alone would be almost unbearable. It sounds like a nightmare, doesn't it? It is, and it's what monkeys (and other animals) endure in this and other laboratories every day."                                       "He didn't even have a name. Instead, he was identified by the last two digits of the I.D. number tattooed across his chest. #99 was one of hundreds of monkeys who were abducted from their homes in the wild, only to be used to test a mysterious experimental substance in a laboratory in Vienna, Virginia. #99 was the smallest and sickliest monkey in the experiment: too pale, too thin, nearly bald, and his skin yellow and flaking off at the slightest touch. After the experiments he was put through, his tail was swollen, red, and oozing pus, and he had trouble breathing because of huge scabs in his nostrils. Every day, technicians would force a tube up #99's nose, down his throat, and into his stomach, where an experimental substance was then pumped. This procedure caused open wounds in #99's throat, making him choke, gag, and vomit. #99 constantly would try to hide from his tormentors in the back of his barren cage. One of the workers involved with the experiments said that he looked like a chemo patient; another observed that he looked "pretty shitty". Others simply laughed at him. He was denied any treatment or painkillers for his injuries, and he suffered constant beatings, abuse, and ridicule - in addition to the horrifying experiments. The technicians called themselves "catchers" because #99 would scream and resist while trying to hold onto his cage, terrified of being violently dragged to the experiment table. After the experiment, the catchers would use a high-powered hose to rinse his cage - covered in blood, feces, and vomit - with #99 still inside.
