I'm the singer/guitarist in 'alternative blues' band, Papa Legba. Our ambition is to create raw, emotional music rooted in our blues influences but relevant to modern audiences. My own musical taste is so diverse it boarders on schizophrenic.
I enjoy weight training and am interested in healthy eating. I'm currently trying to get back in shape, cycling, weight training and following Weight Watchers, all trying to undo the damage done by my love of food... which, I believe is one of life's greatest pleasures. I love to cook and having friends round for one of my infamous Caribbean curries or going out for a meal are favourite activities!
I try to stay positive and consider myself a rational optimist. These days, after years of excess in Nottingham, I'm trying to look after myself and keep my latent self-destruct steak at bay!
Much to the bemusement of my apolitical fiancée, I'm very interested in politics, with a particular interest in equality, sustainability, human rights / civil liberties and criminal justice. I'm a member of The Green Party and an ex-Labour party member.
I do my best to limit my impact on the environment and lead an ethical lifestyle. I've also this year started a veg patch in the garden and relative self sufficiency is a long term ambition!
I've always felt spiritual affinity with nature and aspire to a humanist or philosophical pagan lifestyle. I'm never happier than when I'm surrounded by the natural environment, away from the stresses of everyday life and turbo-consumerism. Getting off to the Scottish Highlands for a week is hard to beat!
...If all of that makes me sound very serious, you should be advised that when I'm not debating politics, I can also often be found dancing around the kitchen making ape noises and improvising odes to the beauty and wonder of my fiancée's bottom...
I'm a rational optimist. I believe in looking after yourself (mind and body) and trying to live a healthy life. I believe in the three R's, Respect for self, Respect for others, and Responsibility for all your actions. I think the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you is a good basis for morality. I believe in limiting my impact on the environment and respecting nature. I believe in being actively engaged with the world and doing something, however small, about the things you care about. I believe in opening your arms to change, but holding onto your values. I believe in equality, diversity, solidarity, sustainability, civil liberties and human rights. I believe in being as self sufficient as possible. I believe in a process of perpetual self growth and self improvement, in being reflective and self aware. I believe in being tolerant and compassionate.
What Gives Me Hope
If I were Mayor, I'd make the world a better place by
I'd adopt a truly redistributive tax system and close tax loop holes for the rich to close the inequality gap. I'd introduce a living wage significantly higher than the current minimum wage. I'd commit to reducing carbon emissions in line with the latest science and promote a return to a slower, more communitarian society with people living and working in largely self sufficient communities.
