My name is Ava. I am a local community activist/volunteer/etc and am the founder of a local community group abnd county wide recycling group where I live in Queens.
I am in the process of opening a community center.
Just to give you an idea- October 29th we are did a fall cleanup of Queens Blvd. We collaborated with the Queens Blvd Restoration Group, Doe Fund/Ready Willing and Able Street cleaners, the Parks Dept, and the daffodil project which was started after 9/11 to promote growth in the city by planting daffodil gardens by volunteer groups.
October 15th we did a very successful event for It's My Park Day at a park in Forest Hills (next town over), we planted the daffodils (I got a few hundred bulbs LOL) had a steel drum player, clown, games, free ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery, face painting, pumpkin coloring, and even Mother Goose was there! Donations from local businesses helped with a raffle to fundraise for our local volunteer ambulance who recently lost a emergency vehicle.
We did a Rally to save the Trylon Theater. To preserve and landmark it's significance to the 1939 Worlds Fair and keep the history of our community alive. It is in the process of being demolished. I had a petiton out for that.
We had a successful Holiday party, despite cold weather, with people tired and late!
Our group has had a smaller scale Social events, volunteer efforts, local dinners, meetings at the park, etc. I also have a community website and yahoo group for my many members. So far we are a combination social/volunteer/activism group, bringing neighbors together working to improve the quality of life in our neighborhood, be it environmental, social, adding trees, graffiti cleanups, supporting local groups, etc.
I would like to generate support for the family community center in Rego Park. Any support is appreciated!
If I were Mayor, I'd make the world a better place by
Give parenting classes for all age groups, lower prices on everything, higher wages, more easy access food pantries, and encourage more recycling between people!
