Good News
The RSPCA is delighted that as of Wednesday, 11 March 2009, amendments to the European Union (EU) Cosmetics Directive came into force, meaning it is now illegal to test cosmetics ingredients on animals anywhere in the EU.
Around 5,000 animals in the EU were being used annually for this purpose. A ban on testing finished products was already in place.
Years of campaigning has paid off The ban comes as a result of many years of campaigning by the RSPCA for an end to the use of animals in testing cosmetics ingredients and products.
Such use of animals has been banned in the UK since the late 1990s, and when the 7th amendment to the European Union Cosmetics Directive was passed in 2003, this marked an excellent outcome for our long running campaign.

I found this news announcement on http://www.dfordog.com/ Well, I hope it will work. EU Ban Dog and Cat Fur Trade From 31 December 2008 there will be a ban on the trade of dog and cat fur in Europe.
The long fought for ban received the high profile support of Heather Mills and her former husband Sir Paul McCartney. Heather Mills demanded an EU ban on her website and started an online petition, collecting over 250,000 signatures.
Proposals for the ban were endorsed by EU governments at the end of 2006. The resulting law prohibits all EU imports and exports and any trade in dog or cat fur in the 27 European countries. This European ban follows similar legislation in America and Australia. However, China continues to trade dog and cat fur, in particular to Russia.
Conservative MEP Struan Stevenson welcomed the EU ban in the trade of cat and dog fur and said it would save the lives of millions of animals slaughtered every year, mostly in China, that were destined for Europe.
However, caution is still needed on the part of importers, retailers and the buying public. Mr Stevenson said: "The ban comes just in time as I understand there is something of a revival in fur in the fashion world. The onus is now on retailers and others to ensure that such demand doesn't encourage unscrupulous fur dealers to search for ways to break the law. We all need to remain vigilant if we see suspect fur in this country and ask questions as to its origin."
Shoppers may buy goods that are made using dog or cat fur unknowingly because exporters attach false labels or misleading labels and try to disguise the fur, often making it look like faux fur. It is used in blankets, coats, linings for boots and gloves, toys, and many other items. "Many people are unwittingly deceived into buying garments made out of cat and dog fur due to mislabelling. This law will put an end to these deceptive practices," said Labour MEP Arlene McCarthy.
Lets hope that is the case, but cat and dog fur can be hard to detect when it is dyed so, until we have accurate testing methods in place, it might be best to steer clear of
