The United States: How my Country values its Mothers and Daughters
Sick and pregnant women are routinely shackled during hospitalization and childbirth if they are inmates of prisons or jails in the USA.
Many women in prisons and jails in the USA are victims of sexual abuse by staff, including male staff touching inmates' breasts and genitals when conducting searches; male staff watching inmates while they are naked; and rape.
Women are the fastest growing and least violent segment of prison and jail populations. 85.1% of female jail inmates are behind bars for nonviolent offenses.
From 1986 (the year mandatory sentencing was enacted) to 1996, the number of women sentenced to state prison for drug crimes increased ten fold (from around 2,370 to 23,700) and has been the main element in the overall increase in the imprisonment of women.
From 1985 to 1996, female drug arrests increased by 95%, while male drug arrests increased by 55.1%.

Alabama Court of Civil Appeals Section 30-3-133, a part of the Custody and Domestic or Family Abuse Act, provides:"In every proceeding where there is at issue adispute as to the custody of a child, a determination by the court that domestic or family violence has occurred raises a rebuttable presumption by the court that it is in the best interest of the child to reside with the parent who is not a perpetrator of domestic or family violence in the location of that parent's choice, within or outside the state. Therefore, the mother says, the trial court was required to make an express finding as to whether the presumption that it was not in the best interest of the children to reside with the father had been rebutted. We disagree. www.barw.com/publications_opinions.cfm?ID=4818

Ozark Police Chief Tony Spivey said 41-year-old Darrin Keith Johnson of Newton turned himself in to authorities on Monday after admitting to stabbing 40-year-old Allison Fuller Johnson multiple times in the chest, back and throat inside her mother’s home at 157 Bradford St. in Ozark.
The 14-year-old was in a back room at the time of the stabbing, while the 5-year-old was outside, Spivey said.
