Urgent help for the Dogs of Calarasi, Sep 15 2007

A mass-slaughter has been planned for all stray dogs of the town of Calarasi, Romania, September 15 2007. It is believed a fox suffering of rabies has infected all the dogs in the area. It is not known at this point if this is true or not, but it is likely to be another way of trying to control the ever-growing population of stray dogs in this town and elsewhere in Romania.
UPDATE 17/9/2007 The first 18 dogs have now been killed, thousands more are awaiting their fate in quarantene. The fox tested negative in an independant lab.

The killings of the dogs started in the Romanian city Calarasi with the pretext of a sick fox, who was declared infected with rabies. However there is nor an official warning neither any quarantine measure applied, which would be mandatory in any case of rabies infection. Many citizens are testifying atrocities that, if true, would be a shame on your Administration. We invite you to stop the killing immediately, to hire only skilled and equipped workers and to start urgently a vaccination plan, together with a neuter and release program like other Romanian cities are doing.

Pregnant mares used for Premarin production are confined to narrow tie stalls where they cannot turn or lie down for weeks at a time without release for exercise. This chronic lack of exercise can cause severe swelling of the legs, breakdown of the hoof structure and sets the stage for colic. They are harnessed to urine collection bags six months a year. The mares may be kept in pregnant for production for 8 to 9 years. At the end of their use, they are sent to slaughter.
