A young teenage girl

Confined to small spaces.

Not able to go outside

Or visit new places.

PRNs and over medication

Wanting to be freed

Suicide temptations

Plexiglas windows

Covered by a metal cage

So you couldn’t hurt yourself

In a fit of rage

All the while

You’re just a name on the list

Abandoned at a mental ward

Without a hug or kiss

No place of your own

No help to seek relief

All by your little lonesome

In a state of disbelief

Kids screaming so loud

And being defiant

They’re getting restrained

For being non-compliant

They would beat and cry

From within the quiet room walls

Just hearing that sound

Made my skin crawl

Hands over ears

I’d just rock on my bed

Wishing for the end

I’d have rather been dead

What would I have given

Just to feel loved?

What would I have given

Just to be touched?

Getting to go home

An idea you can’t conceive

You’ll never get out

Is what you start to believe

Days turn to weeks

Months turn to years

I could have filled buckets

With all of my tears

I’d lost all hope

I couldn’t take it anymore

Tired of being on this unit

Behind locked doors

Was it even possible

For God to hear my soul scream?

Take me in His hands

Away from this hellish dream

Three and a half years

Of my life were wasted

But freedom is the sweetest thing

That I have ever tasted

Never take for granted

Being able to make your own choices

Remember there are people out there

Who have not their own voices.
