Two years ago I started to write to prisoners in Texas and California. It made me sad what I found out about prisons in the USA, but I am a dreamer, in my fantasy I can make it better, this is the reason why I use to write novels, maybe it is the first step to give live to a new idea.
I don't believe in revenge and violence causes much more violence instead of security. I am sure that the people who hurt us are hurt too. So why should we hurt them even more? I think we have to heal people and situations and the prison I create is a place where it is possible to heal. Please believe me, I had a very hard and bitter life and I know what it means to be abused, but I still think it would be better when someone would be able to heal the man who has hurt me so much. And please don't forget, it is impossible to teach compassion, love, forgiveness and inner peace when guards are not better than criminals!
The prisoners don't live in cells but in little apartments with separate plumbing units and enough room for maybe to play a musical instrument. This apartments are more like student rooms than like prison cells.
Every prisoner has a key for his room and he is the one who decides when he wants to be in his room or not.
Part of the prison is a farm that works ecological and and that gives the products for, among other things, a brewery, that don't produce alcoholic products but eco-lemonade only.
Every corridor has a kitchen and a dining room for all and also washing machines, bathtubs for medical baths and an aquarium.
Every prisoner shall learn to cook and how to clean his clothes.
The prisoners have to be a member of a human rights- or an environmental oganization.
And they have to be part of a theater- or a dance group, an orchestra or a choir.
We will edit our own books, will have an own radio station.
The guards shall have a special education to be able to react without needless cruelty when confronted with conflicts and emergency situations.
We will have mediators who's members are from the guards as well as from the prisoners.
Prisoners and Guards will have spokespersons in the prison parliament.
The prisoners can work for a fair salary or learn and study for their future. The education shall be very good and the teachers shall work with the newest and best methods.
We wish the prisoners as teachers to give their special knowledge, like their native languages and the knowledge about their cultures to others.
We will have religious and spiritual rooms not only for a special religion. We wish of course sweat lodges.
Social competent behaviour will be aided, even with the guards as role model, who have to be polite and helpful. If they don't act in this way it is a reason to be discharged.
Medical care is important and we support alternative healing methods like Bach flowers, homeopathy, aromatherapy and Sebastian Kneipp's hydrotherapy.
- We will have the best psychologists and prisoners who are abused or addicts have to work with self-help groups.
Prisoners can work for crisis lines as a compensation for their crime after they did enough healing work..
For those prisoners who can spend some time outside to work we have gallery/shop where we present the art of other inmates and where people find advice and conversation.
We have stadiums and studios for sport and art to perform on a high level.
Eventually some of the athletes are allowed to enter a contest.
For the prisoner's families there will be a hotel, free for poor families and others have to pay what they are able to give.
we will raise a fund to support families who are not able to spend money for the traveling tickets to protect the contacts to the families.
One part of their income the prisoners have to pay for a foundation that will help to compensate. And the prisoners have to be open for discussions with their victims, their families and the victim's families.
We use alternative healing methods, especially from Native American cultures.
We wish to see personal clothes and hairstyle, we don't want uniforms but we don't allow clothes and hairstyles when this represents a antidemocratic and fascistic attitude.
Some of the prisoners have to go to schools to give lectures when they worked enough for their healing.
The orchestra and all the other artistic groups have to show their abilities to the public at least once a year.
