This Hapu'u fiddlehead was one of many that grew  in my back yard on the Big Island of Hawaii. Hawaiian Hapu'u is an impressive local fern which often grows up to 8 feet high. The fern was used by the traditional Hawaiian healers. The fiddleheads like the one in the picture are the baby ferns. They will spring up out of the decay of the old plant. When I watched them grow in my yard, it touched a primitive part of me...that place within me that is in tune with the cycles of nature. I feel a connectedness with the healers that came before me. It would make me realize that I am what I am meant to be...a healer, a priestess, a child of the Mother and Father.
