Poverty is not just a matter of subsistence. Poverty encompasses the absence of opportunity to partake of the very things we take f0r granted: food, housing, education, training, work opportunities, and most severely, it denies the right to a fruitful life.
Poverty drives individuals to extremes just so as to survive. Others lose hope, faith and will. Despair drives parents to sell children, teenagers sell their bodies for a pittance and societies crumble incrementally under the pressure of living on nothing. Values and norms lose meaning as the fight to live through hunger and a spot in a drain pipe for sleep out of the rain, fighting over that extra sniff of glue are all that some children learn about being disposable and invisible to the greater world.
And what do we lose in the process? Human potential. We lose a child’s discovery of their own mind, a child who through play and exploration would otherwise uncover the wealth of their own talent and what they could possibly contribute to the world. As you brush off a child who begs to wash your car windows as you wait for a red light, or a kid asks to take your shopping trolley, don’t just imagine it being your own child, but see the scientist, the musician, the economist, the community leader, the teacher, whose potential dies in your looking the other way…… The choice is yours… and yours…and yours…. And mine! We can make poverty history if we want it to be.

The Earth Charter Initiative _________________________
What is the Earth Charter?
The Earth Charter is a declaration of fundamental principles for building a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society in the 21st century. It seeks to inspire in all peoples a new sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the wellbeing of the human family and the larger living world. It is an expression of hope and a call to help create a global partnership at a critical juncture in history.
The Earth Charter's inclusive ethical vision recognizes that environmental protection, human rights, equitable human development, and peace are interdependent and indivisible. It provides a new framework for thinking about and addressing these issues. The result is a fresh, broad notion of what constitutes a sustainable community and sustainable development.
WiserEarth serves the people who are transforming the world. It is a community-editable international directory and networking forum that maps and connects the largest movement in the world – the hundreds of thousands of organizations and concerned individuals within civil society that address social justice, poverty, and the environment.
WiserEarth provides the tools and a platform for non-profit organizations, funders, social entrepreneurs, students, organizers, academics, activists, scientists, and citizens to find each other, make connections, build alliances and share resources.
WISER stands for World Index for Social and Environmental Responsibility.
What Does WiserEarth Do?
WiserEarth links organizations and people in new ways:
Its comprehensive taxonomy (described on the site as Areas of Focus) combined with its database of over 100,000 organizations based in 243 countries, territories and sovereign islands, makes it the largest, freely accessible, international directory of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
Just like Wikipedia, WiserEarth invites its users to create and edit content on the site.
It is free of advertisements and commercial entities. WiserEarth encourages its users to create personal profiles so that they can build visibility for their work, create connections and contribute to the conversations taking place on the site.
WiserEarth provides groups for networks that want a unique space to gather, share resources, collaborate on projects, and grow their network
WiserEarth provides a free web presence for grassroots groups without a website, helping bring visibility to their cause.
WiserEarth provides funders a comprehensive landscape of organizations engaged in specific program activities.
WiserEarth provides geographic maps to locate individual organizations, or any collection of organizations, from street to continent level.
WiserEarth offers free postings for the recruitment of staff, volunteers, and interns and plans to offer (in the future) a marketplace to share surplus resources and materials.
Academics, students, politicians, and the media can better visualize the extent and comprehensiveness of global civil society.
Why is WiserEarth Needed?
The more than one million organizations and the one hundred million individuals who actively work towards ecological sustainability, economic justice, human rights, and political accountability work on issues that are systemically interconnected and intertwined. However, their effectiveness to prevent harm and institute positive change is undermined by the lack of a collective awareness, duplicative efforts, and poor connectivity. A widely diverse network of organizations is the best defense against injustice, but to be effective, it needs to be connected and intelligent. What is missing is a map and directory of this network that includes the resources for communication and cooperation, created and managed by the community; in essence, an infrastructure through which to coordinate our efforts.
WiserEarth provides this movement a way to see itself and become connected.
I often see it as the majority around 70/80% want to do what is right but tend to follow the status quo, 10/15% percentage want power and control and are prepared to do anything to get it and 10/15? want to bring about a positive change and care. It is this 10/15% that WILL change the world. At the moment we are fragmented into groups, following a narrow agenda. We have a pluralistic and relativistic attitude and anything that appears perennial is resisted and seen as dogmatic. This is the challenge we face, but don't we ALL want the same thing? If we were to unite then the majority 70/80% would, piece by piece begin to follow and we would ALL get the results that we are working for. We are not falling back into dogma and absolutism but going above and beyond fragmentation that brings lack of action. We need to start moving towards more integral communication, coordination and cooperation. It is this step that those who care need to take, we need to put aside our personal differences and work together for the good of all. We have already moved away from arrogant dogma and discovered our own unique journey, but now it is time to bring our journeys together.
If we can get a ground swell of support behind this global movement for change, it will need the support of everyone. Why therefore not bring all the charities and ORGANISATIONS into play here by helping them also understand that EVERY ONE of them can achieve their global objectives - SAVE THE CHILDREN, OXFAM, GREENPEACE, AMNESTY INTL, FAIRTRADE, CND, ETC if they all get behind a movement to initiate a 'global governance' change that protects humanity as a whole'.
There are literally hundreds of charities ALL trying to improve the state of the world in one way or another and if they all teamed together to create this change - IT WILL HAPPEN! And then they would all achieve their goals instead of all of them failing in most respects because they are still so fractional in their approach, often being overridden by governments and economic greed. It's important that all these organisations stop thinking along isolated lines and work together. They need to get pass any of their personal ego's or politics and seriously start working together!

Climate is not the only crisis the world faces. The ignorance of man spreads far and wide and it must be addressed as a whole - not isolated to just climate control. Climate control means nothing if countries continue to compete AGAINST each other and greed continues to destroy people's lives...
We have to address the source problem which is human ignorance. ______________
Aboriginals take tough stance on rock art
Read 'The West Australian' newspaper article, 23 July, 2008:
"A North-Western Australian indigenous group has taken its strongest stance yet to stop the destruction of rock carvings on the Burrup Peninsula by resolving to reject any further requests from resource companies to move rock art.
Wong-Goo-Tt-Oo elder Wilfred Hicks said yesterday the group had decided last month to “draw a line in the sand” and oppose the further removal of any ancient rock for industrial development. He said his people had had enough of the State and Federal governments’ soft stance on the issue. “The government is not listening. Whatever they want to do they’re just going right ahead and doing,” he said. He estimated that more than 1000 rock carvings had been moved in the last five or six years. The last request from Woodside to move more than 200 for its Pluto Area B gas development was the final straw.
Western Australia´s Burrup Peninsula is the world's largest outdoor rock engraving site, containing rock art of world importance possibly dating back to 30,000 years ago, including possibly the first ever representation of the human face in history.
Woodside Petroleum and the Western Australian Government are planning to turn part of this site into a natural gas production facility against the wishes of some of the site`s Aboriginal custodians and the scientific community. (and me!)
Should we save the rock art or just say 'BLOW! IT' it in the name of development and industry?
Footnote: Dear reader, If you have read this far, you probably find this site (and me?) morbidly aligned with a morbidly declining planet!...BUT in fact, although this is a concern, I am of the belief that time wounds all heels (Of which I am one) but, also, that a good laugh occasionally heals all wounds...SMILE!...Peace, happiness and laughter to you all!
"At first people refuse to believe that a strange new thing can be done, then they begin to hope it can be done, then they see it can be done--then it is done and all the world wonders why it was not done centuries ago."
