Typical Gemini...ie, two sides of the same coin, yet at the same time two very different sides...one quiet, insular and reflective, the other outgoing and fun loving:)
I don't know about wild fact...but the wildest situation I have ever been in was the first mountain I ever climbed...I don't think having a guy who had just run a marathon and another who holds a Guinness world endurance record makes for the best team mates for an ok'ly fit guy like myself, haha…however to cut a long story short, after a fast and hard climb to 100m short of the summit we had to leave the leeward side of the mountain and move onto an arête for the final push to the top…20m below the arête, crouching trying to catch my breath the noise of the gale blowing up the side of the mountain onto the arête sounded like being stood behind a jet engine at full thrust on take off (having previously done this you can be assured it is deafening!) an earlier weather check confirmed the winds at a steady 70 kph with gusts to over 120kph with a windchill well into the ‘minuses’…That last 100m climb, immersed in the cloud with little visibility, ice forming on my clothes chilling my bones through four layers of clothing was the wildest, most out of my comfort zone feeling I have ever had…yet never have I felt more alive, the senses be more acute…nature is truly awesome, humans on a ‘good day’ are truly awesome…defend the rights of others, defend the rights of all animals, protect the environment, live a life to be proud of, live a life worth living, step outside your comfort zone as you will never feel more alive!!!PS...when I was 17 I broke both my legs, my back, a selection of ribs, snapped my foot in half etc and live each day in rather noticeable pain but if life is not for pushing our own individual limits and making a difference where we can, then was it a precious gift truly well invested?:)
My Philosophy
never give in or give up...the only thing that ever made a difference to anything, anytime was one persons efforts directed either singularly or as part of a group...have found this holds good for every area of life
What Gives Me Hope
Believing in 'one brighter day' not just for myself, but the whole world or as one of my dearest friends calls it...'her one fine day'
If I were Mayor, I'd make the world a better place by
1) Address rampant consumerism and its associated consumption of finite natural resources. Take ‘sustainability’ from being just a word to a way humans actively pursue their lives…bad news is most human (read nearly all current) activities are unsustainable. 2) All animals, be that humans, cats, fish etc are sentient creatures…sooooo…does it not make sense to do everything possible look after all our fellow inhabitants of this little rock hurtling through space?
What/who changed my life and why
The little ‘peanut’ of a Malay gal that changed my life and perspectives forever. She also introduced me to this website and most eloquently convinced me that individuals can make a difference, especially via websites like this one! Guess we all have to start somewhere as I am by nature a very reserved person and have been taught to 'keep my head down' though I think comes from my Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather having all been in the military where it was usually literally good advice! However, we are told one of the main things our armies fight for is to give people FREEDOM. Freedom of thought, freedom of speech, freedom from oppression, the right for each human being to have their voice heard without fear of persecution for their views. Well, I guess there comes a time where standing up and being counted becomes a stronger urge than fading into the background, enjoying a quiet life and letting others stick their heads over the parapet...so as much as I don't really want my full name on a petition destined for ‘The Police General’ of some country or other I might be stepping into next week. Though I can't somehow help but feel what we class as our basic freedoms, our basic rights, such as those of free speech or to peacefully protest are somehow being eroded. And as much as my beliefs and passions are intensely personal to me, it is just the right time to 'publish and be damned' as the old saying goes! Better a Lion for a day than a slug for a lifetime;)
Not so much a quote, more a few words on the lasting positive impact of one of my role models. Howard Hughes, often disparaged for his illnesses and various parts or his life & and some of the projects he was involved also left a significant legacy with the aim of ‘making fundamental biological discoveries for the betterment of human health’. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) has over the past two decades invested some US$ 8.3 billion in the above aim and currently provides employment for 2600 people. As always maybe not all people will be supportive of all the projects they pursue, not even myself, though their dedication to addressing diseases such as AIDS and MALARIA which have their most dramatic effects on some of the poorest inhabitants of our planet are to be applauded. Say and think what you like about the man himself and his motives (apart from recent films such as Aviator HH had just about slipped quietly in to history and obscurity)...US$8.3 BILLION!!!that is some phenomenal legacy to leave the world and the HHMI's work goes from strength to strength!
