I am enthusiastic about my chosen topic and heartened by the positive response to the new class that I designed-- Animal Rights, Politics, and the Environment for the Cultural and Historical Studies Department at Marylhurst University, which I taught for the first time this winter term 2011. During the summer of 2008 I live-trapped then took two sets of feral cats to the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon's clinics to be spayed and neutered, vaccinated, and treated for fleas etc. The organization requests a donation of $25 for each feral cat treated. I now have eight "fixed" feral garden kitties that prefer petting initially to eating food twice daily. They are a welcome addition to my Abyssinian house cat, Anubis and her companion indoor-outdoor kitty, Isis. The outdoor kitties definitely like the little doghouse and the two-tier cat house that my son built for them. I am an animal rights activist writing a book titled What Are Animal Rights? and will teach a class on that topic during summer, 2009. I also advocate by modeling my philosophy in my behavior with my family and friends as well as through my formal teaching. Of course, I do not eat animals! Although PETA is seriously effective and more commonly known, I would like to promote the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). This organization's president is Doctor Barnard, who has been interviewed locally by a friend of mine who co-sponsors a chimp rescue mission in West Africa where chimps are poached as bushmeat. PCRM publishes a newsletter written by qualified doctors. It is run by qualified veterinarians and medical doctors all of whom are vegetarians. PCRM actively legislates to ban cruelty and animal experimentation as well as recommends ethical, safe products.
I am English with UK & US citizenship. I teach humanities with a focus on animal rights at Marylhurst University. I have two married sons who live nearby and three grandsons as well as one granddaughter. I also have ten cats: an Abyssinian indoor cat; an adopted rescued longhaired indoor-outdoor kitty; and ten erstwhile feral outdoor kitties now "fixed" and friendly. I did an ecology thesis & art portfolio in college in England and remain an environmentalist, avid organic gardener, supporter of local organic produce, and teacher of environmental ethics as well as arts appreciator. For laughs, I love Monthy Python and Yes, Prime Minister! as well as Jon Stewart; for inspiration, I listen especially to Mozart's Clarinet Concerto & Wagner's Lieberstod & consider the visual & performing arts.
