Eustace's Surgery Fund

  Eustace has Passed

He was layed to rest on Thursday March 1, 2007 around 5:50 PM. He was cremated and is now home.

He came to visit us...On the night his ashes were brought home I unlocked our side door and let our other two dogs outside and my husband followed carrying our 7 year old son (half asleep).  I set his ashes down and took a deep breath...I inhaled a huge whiff of his joke...there was no mistaken the Eustace fart. I took another deep breath and no smell. I smelled around the kitchen smell. It had to be his butt.  Its a very distict smell....anyhow, the next morning my son woke up and said that last night when I let the other dogs out he saw Eustaces camouflage follow the other dogs out (he was brindle in color) and my son was teary eyed.  Well, the next let me tell you that Eustace was never able to go out the side door for a long time because of the steps so we never went out that way with him....well, there was a huge footprint leading outside the door. Its size was huge like his way it was the other dogs! There was no other prints around it either.  I believe that it was his way of telling me that he was here. I have posted it in his file to the right filled with pictures. Look at it! and let me know what you think?

Thank you all for being there for me when I needed you most and for being there for him. Hugs to you!
Please say a prayer that he is happy and pray for someone to come help him to the bridge....he's a scaredy cat. Thanks.

Please Read Eustace's Story Below:

My name is St. Eustace, but my guardians call me "Googie."  I am a 3 year old English Mastiff who lives with a family that loves me very much! I have two best friends, Nana and Virgil, who I love to chase and fetch sticks with.  But lately, I have not been able to be myself.  My vet said that I have Spondylosis, a spinal degenerative disease that results in the loss of a normal spine structure or function.  I have been unable to walk due to the intense pain I feel in my lower back.  My vet put me on Prednisone 2 tablets, 3 times daily; Tramadol 4 tablets, 2x daily and Torbutrol 2 tablets, 2x daily as needed.  Without this medicine I scream from the pain and my legs cramp up on me.  My mommy has been taking good care of me by cleaning me up when I poop and pee myself.  She feeds me and messages me making sure that I do not get sore and then at night she sleeps with me incase I need something.  On nice days she moves me by the open door so that I can look outside and smell the air.  My friends bark at me to come out and play with them, but my legs won't let me.  I want to play soooo bad!
My mommy says that I need surgery and will be going to Purdue University, but it is very expensive and that they do not have the money.  My family has been selling things to make money to help pay for it...but we are going to need a lot more.  My mommy has set up a donation fund for me via Paypal so that caring people can help me get better. She tells me that once I have the surgery that I will be able to live out my life like I was intended.  I love my family and they love me.  Thank you for reading my story.

UPDATE: 5/13/06

Eustace went down to Purdue University this past Wednesday 5/10/06.  He had to be carried in on a gurnee...they attempted to do a spinal tap to try to run dye through his spinal cord to see any blockage. The needle could not go in so they did a CT scan on his spine. His spine is totally fused together in large areas running from his neck to his hips. It is compressing his spinal cord.  They could take off the top of his spine to relieve pressure to the cord, but the sides are still compressing and he would not be able to lift his head again. So...there is nothing they can do. They cut back on his Prednisone, which the drug breaks down muscle and makes them weak.  Since this weaning of the drug he has been getting up on his own more and walking around. He will try Rimydal starting this Sunday and continue on Tramadol.  Rimydal is a non-stroidel drug used for serious arthritis pain and Tramadol is a pain medicine.  Eustace will never be normal and eventually his condition will worsen over time due to bone growth to his spine. In areas his spine is as stiff as a board and does not bend like it should.  Very painful.  We wanted to put him to sleep, but the Vet Specialist said
that he wants us to try this method.
So we will, but only time will tell....I love him too much to want him in pain.  So far, he is playing with his buddies on the floor...and snoring loud...which is a good indicator that he feels good.  We will take every day as it comes.  But we are prepared for the worst...when it comes that he cannot get up anymore then we will have our vet come and help him cross the bridge under our trees in our yard. It's very peaceful there. I have a beloved Brittany Spaniel, Ripley, who passed a few years back..(she will be buried with me someday when I pass)...she will come a get Eustace and help him cross the bridge...I know it! Posted in the pictures on the right is his diagnosis and our current bill owed...they were generous enough to give us credit...but we are still taking donations because we honestly don't know how we are going to pay for this!  He needs very expensive medicine every week! and special food with high Glucosamine/Chondroitin, Omega-3 pills, flaxseed pills, Rimydal, Tramadol, and Pepcid AC every day! Please help us...donate even a $1.00...we are desparate. We are even willing to accept personal checks at this cover the cost of medicine and help cover his bills and check ups. Thanks to everyone who has donated so far, and for all the caring and loving letters I have been receiving. They really mean alot and are a comfort. I will post his statis every few days. Thank you all and God Bless!

UPDATE 06-06-06
Eustace is doing alot better since on the Rimadyl and Tramadol.  He has been getting up more and wanting to run around outside.  But we have to keep him limited to horseplay, because one false move and he's done for.  He still has his days when he dosn't want to walk around much...but that was expected.  He sometimes has a hard time standing and eating so we have to hand feed him...he likes eating from a spoon!  But there are days when he wants to be independant and do his own thing.
We still owe a hefty bill to both the vet and Purdue University.  His medicines are expensive as well...Rimadyl is $60.00 every 2-3 weeks, Tramadol $17.00 every 3 weeks and Beano (For Gas!) $5.00 every week and Pepcid AC $10.00 every week.  His dog food is $30.00 every 3 weeks and he has to mix it with oatmeal and cottage cheese, which is another expense.  Its hard work, but he's well worth it!  He lost 40 pounds at the beginning of this and now has put almost all of it back on! Yeah! I will post again soon. Thanks for caring.

July 24, 2006

Eustace is doing good...he had developed some nasty pressure ulcers on his bad leg....but they are now healing nicely...we just have to make sure that he doesn't keep laying on that leg.  Every other day he gets his ears cleaned, in between his toes cleaned and sprayed with lanacane and Summers Eve feminine powder (works great)...then he gets brushed, and in grown hairs around his ulcers pulled and ulcers squeezed...they are almost gone now...sounds gross buts thats the routine. Aside from that he is living life and just celebrated his 4th birthday on July 17. That IS his actual birthdate not made our other two rescues. Anyhow, take a look at his birthday pictures in the photo section.

We are still accepting donations and have been getting a few...we have been accepting them at Eustace's vet office, so if you would like to donate please contact his vets office at the phone or address below and just tell them that its for Eustace Brown (THEY KNOW US WELL! )
