"Only when I saw the Earth from space, in all its ineffable beauty and fragility, did I realize that humankind's most urgent task is to cherish and preserve it for future generations." — Sigmund Jahn, German cosmonaut
Chenrezig, Buddha of Compassion
Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?" --Martin Luther King, Jr.
"The thinking man must oppose all cruel customs no matter how deeply rooted in tradition or surrounded by a halo. We need a boundless ethic which will include the animals also." - Albert Schweitzer, physician/Nobel Laureate.
Practice ethical buying and selling! Put your energy into what works andwithdraw if from what doesn't. By withdrawing your power from institutions that are functionally evil, they will collapse of their own negativity. Use your money and energy to build a world that works for everyone!
"The animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with extension of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren; they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the Earth." --Henry Beston
We are in the largest mass extinction of plant and animal life since the death of the dinosaurs. Humans are the root cause.
"Humans are now exploiting 20% more renewable resources than can be replaced each year...It would require the natural resources equivalent to 4 more Planet Earths to sustain the projected 2050 population of 9 billion people."
-- World Wildlife Fund and Worldwatch Institute in Washington
3 humans are added to Earth per second, 200,000 humans per day, a Dallas or Detroit every 4 days, a Los Angeles every 3 weeks, 80 million humans per year, a Mexico every 1 1/2 years, an Africa every 10 years...
(These numbers are after subtracting deaths). Our choices now are determining the future of those who cannot defend themselves. Please help them!
By 2030 it is estimated there will be a billion people without food, water or electricity.
"Our food reserves are at a 50-year low but, by 2030, we need to be producing 50 per cent more food. At the same time, we will need 50 per cent more energy and 30 per cent more fresh water." --Prof John Beddington, British government's chief scientist.
The supreme selfishness of not thinking or caring about the consequences of one's actions carried on for generations has created a world of scarcity of food and water, habitat destruction and mass extinction of species.
Lots of people say they love the world, care about children, the environment... but then their actions don't line up.
Terminators having sex....
The modern household is the new tyranny.
It has taken 3.5 billion years for this biodiversity to evolve. The natural rate of extinction 1 species per year. The present rate is 1 per hour due to human activities. http://www.dbc.uci.edu/~sustain/bio65/lec01/b65lec01.htm
Human population increase directly related to species extinctions.
Scientists say a meteor caused the extinction of the dinosaurs....
But a meteor hasn't hit Earth this time... It's much more insidious.
Current Calamity
All of those who argue about human rights need to include animal rights in their argument and try to explain the humanity of destroying entire species. Explain our unwillingness to simply use birth control. Humans are not #1.
There is no humanity in overpopulating the planet and destroying our ecosystem.
"Unlike plagues of the dark ages or contemporary diseases we do not understand, the modern plague of overpopulation is soluble by means we have discovered and with resources we posses. What is lacking is not sufficient knowledge of the solution but universal consciousness of the gravity of the problem and education of the billions who are its victim." --Martin Luther King Jr.
The U.N.'s panel of scientists has stated the world has between 3-5 years to curb global warming in order to to avoid a major crisis.
Eating meat is more damaging to the ecosystem than driving a car. It creates more global warming, consumes large amounts of water and creates more pollution.
A recent United Nations report concluded that the meat industry causes almost 40% more greenhouse gas emissions than all the world’s transportation systems — that means all of the globe’s cars, trucks, planes and ships combined!
Without fossil fuels we can only support 1/4 to 1/2 a billion people.
We hit peak oil in 2020! (announced by IEA)
What does this mean???
It =s mass starvation.
Before the oil runs out, it becomes so expensive to pump, it isn't affordable and people cannot afford food or gas! Our entire civilization hinges on oil and we have almost no time to fix this. Buckle up kids, daddy’s puttin' the hammer down!
"If this car drive into a group of gypsies, will there be any damage to the car?" --Borat
We are imploding the ecosystem!
This is the situation peeps....
We are in the largest mass extinction since the death of dinosaurs.
We are losing species at a rate 17,000 to 100,000 a year (depending on whose numbers are used); a worldwide implosion of plant and animal life that has only been equaled 5 times in the past 5 billion years, the last time being the death of the dinosaurs. Animal farming for human consumption is the #1 cause.
We consume more than 50% of the planet’s available fresh water leaving all other species of plants and animals to compete for what is left.
70% of ocean fish stocks are “fully exploited”--DEAD or “overfished.” Dead dude, as in no more, ceased to be.
The world’s oceans have lost over 90% of large predatory fish. --U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization
So what you're saying is birth control is bad?
More than 75% of the topsoil that existed world-wide when Europeans first colonized America is now gone. It takes, on average, 400 years for a forest to create a foot of topsoil that is capable of sustaining crops. People will go hungry if we cut down the forests? uh huh.
So what you are saying is I should keep wiping my butt with virgin forest toilet paper?
NO!...get rid of your bad juju! Use 100% post consumer recycled toilet paper and tissue!
Join Rainforest Action Network (RAN) Environmentalism with teeth! http://ran.org/
72 acres of rainforest are destroyed every minute, mostly by impoverished people working for multinational corporations, who are cutting and burning the forest to create agricultural or pasturelands to grow beef for export to the United States. This 38-million-acres-per-year loss will wipe out the entire world’s rainforest in our children’s lifetimes if it continues at its current pace.
The rainforests supply about 40% of our oxygen and are considered the Earth's lungs. They house 2/3 of the Earth's species of plants and animals.
But the 99 cent burgers are so good! --Here have some of this poison Kool-Aid....
What I'm saying is... It's just not on man...aka...no go.
Oxygen good. Deforestation bad.
Stop eating beef and KFC---#1 destroyer of the Brazilian Rainforest. They suck! Do not eat them!
fo' shizzle my nizzle
MEET YOUR MEAT!
Convenience, greed and addiction are not worth the suffering they cause. Look into the horror of the world and end it by ending in yourself!
This is one of the worst forms of evil in the world and it must be stopped once and for all. This should not exist.
"Animals raised for food account for 98% of all animal abuse and killing in the world."
"More than 55 billion land animals are killed for food each year - that's 150 million/day."The suffering this represents is staggering.
"From birth, they are caged & crowded, deprived & drugged, manhandled & mutilated."
"90% of the animals humans are consuming live in horrible factory farms where they never go outside, live in crowded conditions and have no quality of life. Almost all of them are slaughtered while fully conscious."
And animal testing for our luxury products like cosmetics and cigaretttes....
If you don't read your labels this is what you are doing....
It's not worth it.
Please, for their sake...
Disengage from degradation of life as an act of love and it will improve your consciousness and improve life itself. This horror will exist as long as you give it power.
Enlightenment the easy way... or the hard way grasshopper?
We are in the age of consequences... It's time for the human race to grow the hell up!
Sustainability: Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs--add to this definition plants and animals and their future generations!
Compassion: The deep awareness of the suffering of another coupled with the wish to relieve it; mercy and tenderness of heart. The opposite of compassion is indifference.
Thank you to all vegans and vegetarians for living and breathing compassion. Compassion, like love is expressed in the intimate details of how we live our lives.
