I feel like some cherry pie now...

Think for yourself! Don't become a brick in the wall!

Hi, I am Lex. Nice to meet you. I am interested in homeopathy and natural cures for diseases, protecting the environment and human/animal rights. I love Horror Movies (the good, creepy, psychologically scary ones are my faves), reading, painting (mostly surrealistic stuff), hanging out with animals, hiking and swimming and doing puzzles.

Lex, digging in the sand.

Oh yeah, as well as horror movies, I love Studio Ghibli movies like "Spirited Away" and anything strange and quirky like "Naked Lunch" and the works of Canadian film-maker Guy Maddin. I am technically agnostic, but my religious "beliefs" gravitate towards pantheism with a strong *tendency* to believe in reincarnation (as opposed to a certainty that it exists).

I believe that my "spirit animal" is the Crow. I have always loved crows and I see a lot of my own personality in crows.

SMALL ACTIONS CAN HAVE A BIG IMPACT! Be kind!
"There but for the grace of God, go I..."

I am really into Canadian "First Nations" mythology and art work. I would love to know more from any North American aboriginal person (aka "American Indian"). I love the wisdom and their balanced views, what I have heard of their stories. I love First Nations' art, too.

I love "tribal" art work from around the world. :) I am into the paranormal and aliens, and I like the show Ancient Aliens.

Please meet my animal "family"...

Huxley, age 19 (approx), born spring 1993, female, rescue cat. Love of my life.

Did I mention I am interested in worms?

I also like to paint, draw and make art:

Donate Blood; Save a life!

Other images I like...

I want to make a garden on my balcony this year. I love this balcony garden, don't you?

Also, I find crop circles and diatoms and many other things interesting. I like geometrical patterns.

Oh yes, this is the url to my listal page:

Fellow movie fans may want to check it out!

Remember to vermicompost! It is super, super easy to start your own "worm bin" and lots of fun, too!
Some quick vermicomposting tips- the worms can eat: lint, animal fur (say, from a brush), feathers, crushes egg shells, coffee grounds and paper filters, tea bags, SMALL amount of meat and dairy (some people say none, but they will eat small amounts- the problem is large amounts can rot faster than they will eat and smell VERY bad), SMALL amounts of citrus peel (the oils in the citrus can burn their skin so when I say small, I mean small), apple cores, lettuce, carrots, peppers, pretty much most veggie and fruit peels, bird shit, rabbit poop and the poop of animals that are herbivores (cat and dog poop is high in sodium and other things and can be bad)...

The ideal carbon/nitrogen equation is about 1:25-30 (30 times the nitrogen rich scraps or "greens" as the brown "carbon" rich scraps).

The ideal PH of your bin is between 6.5 and 7.5. You can make your bin more alkaline by adding ground lime stone powder.

If your bin's mud feels "hot" or "warm" that is an excess of nitrogen. Add some more newspaper or "carbon" rich stuff. Aerate.

It is better to have slightly too much nitrogen than not enough.

You want your min to be about as moist as a wrung-out sponge (damp but not soppy). The biggest mistake is having the bin too moist! Second biggest mistake is not aerating the bin often enough.

To moisten your bin you can add your own urine (high in nitrogen and other good stuff).

Vermicompost worm "casings" are the best plant food you can give your plant (much much better than cow manure or commercial fertilizer!)

Turnips. On the far left, 0% vermicompost was added. In the middle 10% of the plot was vermicompost and on the right 20% of the plot of that turnip was vermicompost. Nuff said. FEED YOUR PLANTS!

The best worms for vermincomposting are red wigglers (eisenia fetida)- don't use regular earth worms!

These are red wigglers:

I am also interested in entomophagy, which is the human consumption of insects. Check out these pages:

Eating bugs could reduce global warming! (copy and paste url below)

For the religious among us, this is what the Bible says about entomophagy: Leviticus 11: 20-24

All flying insects that walk on all fours are to be detestable to you. There are, however, some winged creatures that walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground. Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper. But all other winged creatures that have four legs you are to detest. You will make yourselves unclean by these; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening.

I take the above to mean that all insects are fine (hey God! Insects have 6 legs, not 4!)

Some interesting facts about insect nutrition:

Insects contain, weight for weight, at least twice as much animal protein as the finest red meat.

In Angola, the caterpillar, Usta terpsichore M. & W. (Satumiidae), was found to be a rich source of iron, copper, zinc, thiamin (vitamin BJ and riboflavin (B2); 100 9 of cooked insect provided > 100% of the daily requirement of each of these minerals and vitamins (Oliveira et al., 1976). Winged adults of the termite, Macrotermes subhyalinus, are high in magnesium and copper, and the palm weevil larva, Rhynchophorus phoenicis F., in zinc, thiamin and riboflavin. In each case, 100 9 of these insects provided more than the minimum daily requirement.

Chitin comprises ~ 10% of whole dried insects. It is a carbohydrate polymer found in invertebrate exoskeletons, protozoa, fungi and algae, and is being called the polymer of the future because of its abundance, toughness and biodegradability (Goodman, 1989). Numerous applications of chitin and its derivatives (especially chitosan) are being found in medicine, agriculture and industry . In fact, chitin from shells of lobsters, crabs and crayfish has been approved by the Japanese for use in cereals as a source of fibre and calcium

Bon Appetit!

Pics of insect dishes...

Mealworm fried rice:

When I make mine, I am going to add mushrooms, onions, celery, carrots, peas....

Grasshopper TACOS! :)

Insects for sale in Thailand in the market.

To me, eating insects makes a lot more sense than eating cow or pork. Much more nutritious and better for the earth, if done right!

I have only recently gotten into entomophagy but I will be checking out my "China town" for stuff. They have dried lizard heads so I can probably find what I need. I will post pics of my recipes when I make 'em.

HAVE A BUGGY DAY!

Being kind costs no money and very little energy. It makes your world and other worlds better. It is a blessing and gift for not only others but yourself, too.

The following are kidney stones passed simply by increasing water consumption (3-4 quarts a day can flush the body after a week or so).

Water crystals... check out the work of Dr. Masuru Emoto, it is very interesting.

Create tougher child abuse, animal abuse and domestic violence laws.
