Jama Masjid, Delhi
Back in Delhi in late-August 2002, I decided to walk around the city and play tourist for a while.
This is by far my favorite building in all of Delhi. It is the grand Friday mosque built by the emperor Shah-Jahan (of Taj Mahal fame) in the sixteenth century (same time as Versailles).
The use of red sandstone interspersed with marble and the symmetry of its lines makes it an awesome sight.
It is also a MASSIVE building. It can hold up to 50,000 people saying their prayers at once.
