Ahhh, finally, in my arms again. She loved it way up there and held on to me like a baby holding it’s mother… Her legs would flex out from under my arm and her toes would all spread apart.. She’d be in a little ball while holding on to my arm… She’d be purring none stop, and she never wanted me to let her down. She’d follow me around, walking between my legs, and when ever Ed came to sit with us, she’d sprawl on the grass and bask in the thyme & sunshine.. Kaos loved Catnip, and we’ve had it growing everywhere on the land.. Today we have enough to fill boxes if we were to pick them all.. Cat nip is really fun, especially if you have it growing everywhere. When people who owned cats would come over, I would see if I could remember to give them a few freshly pulled catnip branches.. Catnip is a perennial herb belonging to the mint family Labiatae. Which is something we have in abundance during the summer season. The plant is a weed-like mint that is now native in North America and Canada after being introduced from its native Mediterranean soil. The active ingredient in catnip is called Nepetalactone. The response to this chemical is mediated through the olfactory system that cats have a special receptor for. This chemical is thought to mimic the effects of a pheromone to cause a variety of behaviours. The leaves, slightly larger than peppermint, are downy above and below. When its essential oil production reaches its peak, catnip is harvested. Not here though, we just let them grow as beautiful and happy as they are to grow where they’re growing, on our lands. It’s also been used for herbal remedies with humans since at least the 15th century. It was the most commonly consumed herbal drink in Europe before teas from the orient began to be imported. By the 1890’s, Ojibwe native women were using it. It had a Native name; Gajugensibug, and was said to be a good tea to drink to bring down fevers, as well as being pleasant-tasting. Not for me though, I haven’t tasted it and don’t want to. However it can also be used for perfume, as I learned when a beautiful little girl came over with her parents to visit Ed just after I met him… Friends Ed had for many many years, and I was going to meet them just a few days after meeting him.. The little girls name was Irene and today she’s a beautiful woman, but back then 1997 (when Ed and I met), she was small and so sweet.. I took her for a walk in the forest and she got excited when I showed her the catnip growing.. She squished it in her hands and loved what was happening with the aroma.. She then told me that she likes to mix things to make perfume, so she was going to try that with catnip and thought it would smell wonderful… I should ask her today if she makes catnip perfume for Ladies who shop at the Health Food Store yet? Hahaha, hee hee hee.. Ahhh, Those were the days. Well Kaos was around when I met sweet Irene and her family, and she had fun with them too.. Ahhh, Those were the days.
