The Archibald is one of the oldest prizes in Australian art. First awarded in 1921, it has been won by some of Australia’s most revered artists including George Lambert (1927), William Dobell (1943, 48 and 59) and Brett Whiteley (1976 and 78).
Artist Ben Quilty painted legendary Australian painter Margaret Olley, winning the prestigious Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, 15 April 2011.
....in interviews he has said that his friendship and artistic journey with the 88 year old prized interior and still life painter has brought out the best in him:
"I paint a lot of stuff about the darkness of being a young man in this society and she says why not paint the beauty of living in the world? And it's a very valid point. Why don't I? And it's got me thinking".
The subject of his painting, Margaret Olley, said: "I call it celebrating life".
