What have Care2 members been up to this month? Plenty. Below are just a few examples of Care2 members making a splash and getting their petitions featured in the news.

6,000 Demand Las Vegas Stop Horse-Drawn Carriage Plans

When Las Vegas City Council voted to green light a pilot program that would allow horse-drawn carriages on the city streets, plenty of animal rights activists were up in arms. Care2 member and activist Gina Greisen started a petition protesting the initiative; her petition earned the support of more than 6,000 people from Nevada and the rest of the world.

“Horse-drawn carriages in downtown Las Vegas are a tragic accident waiting to happen,” she said. “Mixing horse-drawn carriages with congested traffic, events that draw large crowds, lots of alcohol, the new Container Park, concerts and First Friday pedestrian and vehicle traffic is just dangerous, inhumane and wrong.”

The Care2 petition was featured in a number of print and TV outlets, including:

NBC Las Vegas

FOX Las Vegas

CBS Las Vegas

Thousands Demand Ontario End Paid Leave for Cops Under Criminal Investigation

Ontario taxpayers are sick of footing the bill for police officers under criminal investigation, who are required to be suspended with pay. A Care2 petition by a local business owner surfaced a few days after Const. David Bshouty, a Windsor, Ontario police officer, attempted to bring three grams of cocaine into the U.S. He was arrested and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, and has become the fourth Windsor police officer currently suspended with pay.

In 2008, a survey found 52 police officers were suspended with pay at that time, with annual salaries and benefits totaling $4.8 million.

The Care2 petition was featuring prominently in the following Canadian news outlets:

CBC News

The Windsor Star

Cambridge Times

Activists Deliver 50,000 Petition Signatures Protesting UW Baby Monkey Lab

On April 18, activists delivered 50,000 Care2 petition signatures demanding the University of Washington close its Infant Primate Research Laboratory, where cruel experiments are performed on baby monkeys.

The event coincided with World Laboratory Animal Liberation Week. The Care2 petition, started by actress and former UW student Britt Lind, demanded the National Institutes of Health (NIH) stop using taxpayer money to fund cruel practices that include forcing monkeys to undergo grisly vivisections, brain experiments and isolation.

The protest was covered by the Daily UW. You can watch a video of the petition delivery below, or view the petition here.

All of these stories are a great testament to the power of online petitions created on Care2. Is there an issue or cause you care about? Create a petition today, and show the world what you would like to be changed.
