10 Things Mitt Romney’s Republican Primary Opponents Said About Bain

10 Things Mitt Romney’s Republican Primary Opponents Said About Bain

Written by Judd Legum

Romney has placed his record at Bain at the center of his campaign. In April for example, Romney said, “You might have heard that I was successful in business. And that rumor is true…And after 25 years, I know how to lead us out of this stagnant Obama economy and into a job-creating recovery!” (Multiple independent fact checkers have concluded that Romney’s claims on job creation at Bain are simply false.)

On Monday, President Obama took Romney at his word and noted that the former Massachusetts governor’s record at Bain Capital is “not a distraction” but “what this campaign is going to be about.” Romney’s Republican primary opponents agreed, and in the last six months offered criticism of his tenure at Bain that make Obama’s remarks sound tame by comparison.

Here are the top 10 comments about Bain from Romney’s Republican rivals:

1. “The idea that you’ve got private equity companies that come in and take companies apart so they can make profits and have people lose their jobs, that’s not what the Republican Party’s about.” — Rick Perry [New York Times, 1/12/12]

2. “The Bain model is to go in at a very low price, borrow an immense amount of money, pay Bain an immense amount of money and leave. I’ll let you decide if that’s really good capitalism. I think that’s exploitation.” — Newt Gingrich [New York Times, 1/17/12]

3. “Instead of trying to work with them to try to find a way to keep the jobs and to get them back on their feet, it’s all about how much money can we make, how quick can we make it, and then get out of town and find the next carcass to feed upon” — Rick Perry [National Journal, 1/10/12]

4. “We find it pretty hard to justify rich people figuring out clever legal ways to loot a company, leaving behind 1,700 families without a job.” — Newt Gingrich [Globe and Mail, 1/9/12]

5. “Now, I have no doubt Mitt Romney was worried about pink slips — whether he was going to have enough of them to hand out because his company, Bain Capital, of all the jobs that they killed” — Rick Perry [New York Times, 1/9/12]

6) “He claims he created 100,000 jobs. The Washington Post, two days ago, reported in their fact check column that he gets three Pinocchios. Now, a Pinocchio is what you get from The Post if you’re not telling the truth.” — Newt Gingrich [1/13/12, NBC News]

7. “There is something inherently wrong when getting rich off failure and sticking it to someone else is how you do your business, and I happen to think that’s indefensible” — Rick Perry [National Journal, 1/10/12]

8. “If Governor Romney would like to give back all the money he’s earned from bankrupting companies and laying off employees over his years, then I would be glad to then listen to him” — Newt Gingrich [Mediaite, 12/14/11]

9. “If you’re a victim of Bain Capital’s downsizing, it’s the ultimate insult for Mitt Romney to come to South Carolina and tell you he feels your pain, because he caused it.” — Rick Perry [New York Times, 1/8/12]

10. “They’re vultures that sitting out there on the tree limb waiting for the company to get sick and then they swoop in, they eat the carcass. They leave with that and they leave the skeleton” — Rick Perry [National Journal, 1/10/12]

Just last night, Newt Gingrich defended his attacks, saying “I think there are things you can legitimately look at in Bain Capital. I think there are things you can legitimately look at in anybody’s record, including Mitt Romney’s record.”

In a rare moment of clarity and honesty rethuglicans diss Wrongmey. This does not happen very often in the rethuglican party, you know, honesty, integrity, compassion are surely not buzz words for rethuglicans.

Wrongmey wants voters to think of Obama as not a "true American" yet won't say why he has so much money stashed away in other countries so as not to pay taxes in America. Money he made off of firing people (which he admitted he likes to do), bankrupting companies then moving on to the next victim. Wrongmey is a piece of trash who will say and do anything to get his foot in the Oval Office, even putting that foot in his mouth.
Obama 2012!

Being successful in business is not a criteria for being a successful President of the United States. Look no further than Rick Scott, governor of Florida. He used the same campaign tactics about how successful he was in business and he has done a horrible job as governor. He has nothing to help people only business. And, that has not brought jobs to Florida. If Romney gets in, you can forget clean air, water, and food (not that we have that now) and forget worker rights. He will cater to big business and they will get everything they want which is not what we want.

Sorry about the duplication!

I see from David, that the Rmoney camp is PANDERING TO THE BIRTHERS!
Oh, wow, that's REALLY going to help Romney! {meant as irony!}.

In fact, the whole thing he cites sounds like a SATIRE, not a real campaign site!
If it IS For Real, then Mittens Rmoney is even way ahead of the Comedians making hay off of him!
BIRTHERS, omigod, BIRTHERS...... they must be the ONLY PEOPLE LEFT who will vote for this VENAL, HEARTLESS IDIOT......

{This IDIOT who says that "RUSSIA" is our greatest International enemy..... what DECADE is Mittens living in.....??????? He thinks he's gonna be President, with his FINGER ON THE NUCLEAR TRIGGER?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! omigod, is all I can say to that thought......}

Rich people DON'T "create jobs" -- how did THAT Big Lie ever get any currency at all?
Rich people take their money and, like Mitt Rmoney, put it in Swiss Bank Accounts and offshore accounts in places like the Cayman Islands, like Mitt did.
Or else, they "create jobs" in CHINA, where sweatshop workers go much, much cheaper than workers in the U.S., and they don't have as much freedom to complain about their unhealthy, strenuous working conditions either! and no protective laws! PARADISE for Corporate money!

Economists know, that it is actually CONSUMERS who Create Jobs -- if they have any money to spend for consumer goods, that is!
By PUTTING PEOPLE OUT OF WORK, people like Rmoney NOT ONLY CREATE POVERTY among those workers who are laid off, but there is MORE UNEMPLOYMENT, a ripple effect, when those unemployed workers with little or no income, can't buy goods and services any more. So there are WIDENING CIRCLES OF UNEMPLOYMENT and POVERTY; not only a drastically-lowered standard of living, but even HUNGER, UNTREATED MEDICAL CONDITIONS AND DEATH.
THANKS A LOT, MITT RMONEY AND FRIENDS!

Right on Mr. Legum! What a clever idea to go back and see what Romney's opponents had to say about Bain.

7:47PM PDT on May 23, 2012

Romney's Bain is a greedy predator that swallows a company, discards the employees, sells it at a profit and move son to the next - discarding more employees - ad infinitum. Of course this is good business for Romney, as his constant smirk attests, but bad business for ouf-of-work Americans.
Romney is just another member of that nauseating tribe of bible bashing hypocrites.

7:42PM PDT on May 23, 2012

from Mitt Romney 2012 Site:
•After going to both Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School simultaneously, he passed the Michigan bar, but never worked as an attorney.
•As a venture-capitalist, Romney's first major business deal involved investing in a start-up office supply company with one store in Massachusetts that sold office supplies. That company, called Staples, now has over 2,000 stores and employs over 90,000 people.
•Romney or his company Bain Capital (using what became known as the "Bain Way") would go on to perform the same kinds of business miracles again and again, with companies like Domino's, Sealy, Brookstone, Weather Channel, Burger King, Warner Music Group, Dollarama, Home Depot Supply, and many others.
•Got your calculators handy? Let's recap.
•Volunteer campaign worker for his dad's gubernatorial campaign 1 year.
•Unpaid intern in Governor's office 8 years.
•Mormon missionary in Paris 2 years.
•Unpaid bishop and stake president for his church 10 years. No salary as president of the Olympics 3 years.
•No salary as MA governor 4 years.
•That's a grand total of 28 years of unpaid service to his country, his community and his church.
Why? Because that's the kind of man Mitt Romney is.
And you know what? He’ll show you his:
• Un-doctored Birth Certificate!
•College transcripts!
• Law degree!
•Mitt Romney – American by birth!

Mitt Romney is an evil man and when you look into his eyes, you see nothing but insane greed there. I have no clue why anybody would vote for that man regardless who his opponent is.
