That age-old question asked by an 18-year-old Austin, Texas teenager is making the rounds on YouTube. Ben Breedlove suffered with a life-threatening heart condition called HCM his entire life. Sadly, he died on Christmas evening and was buried Thursday, December 29, 2011.
So often you can find ancient wisdom in the youth who live with chronic and terminal illnesses. Ben is no exception. A typical product of his generation, Ben had a YouTube channel called OurAdvice4You and another called Breedlove TV.
But the video for which Ben will always be remembered is the one he filmed secretly, one week before his death. Set to somber music and silent except for words written on flash cards, Ben describes a lifetime of dealing with a prematurely uncertain mortality and his out of body experiences during cardiac arrests.
No matter what your belief system may be, watching Ben’s final video seems a privilege and an honor. A heartfelt thank-you goes out to his parents and siblings for sharing the message of this remarkable teen. When interviewed by MSNBC, Ben’s mom said “I just think Ben opened a door for a lot of people to think about something that maybe they’ve never thought about before. And that to me is a wonderful gift.”
Kid Cudi was moved to tears after seeing Ben’s video and wrote on his blog: “I am so sad about Ben Breedlove. I watched the video he left for the world to see, and him seeing me in detail, in his vision really warmed my heart… To Ben’s family, you raised a real hero, he’s definitely mine. You have my love.”
Do you believe in angels or God? With over 2 million views thus far, I suppose a lot of people are asking themselves that same question.

It was very hard to read the cards on the video with tears in my eyes. This boy knew he was going to die and was happy to go to be with our Lord. What an inspiration to us all. Rest in Peace dear Ben.
