4.5 Million Animals Saved From Toxicity Testing

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has responded to requests from animal welfare groups to clear up vague chemical safety testing requirements, which will spare about 4.5 million animals from toxicity testing.

Animal welfare groups including the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments, Eurogroup for Animals, Humane Society International – Europe, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and PETA Europe all wrote ECHA with concerns about companies performing repeated toxicity tests in order to register chemicals under the EU’s Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulations, which governs chemicals sold in Europe.

From the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection:

In particular, there was a danger that companies would conduct ‘screening’ tests for reproductive and general toxicity (which still consume dozens to hundreds of animals per chemical), and would later be required to conduct more comprehensive tests for these same effects. The language within REACH and its guidance was ambiguous on this point.

ECHA has today issued a press statement clarifying that animal tests need not be conducted if similar, more comprehensive tests are going to be proposed. Companies registering chemicals that are produced in quantities of 100 tonnes or more can therefore fulfill initial registration requirements without performing the screening tests if they are proposing to do more comprehensive tests later in the process.

The animal groups estimate, based on ECHA’s own figures that 6,000 chemicals may fall under the relevant information requirements, that this clarification alone has the potential to save the lives of 4.5 million animals.

The task at hand now is to make sure companies abide by this clear instruction and do not conduct duplicative testing on qualifying chemicals.

“We are delighted that ECHA has responded so promptly and positively to our request and helped prevent potential duplicative testing using more than 4 million animals. We still have other concerns regarding REACH and its implementation, but this common sense approach is a good start.”

Meanwhile, you can still join the Dr Hadwen Trust, Four Paws and the Humane Society International in a virtual march for their Make Animal Testing History campaign to let the European Parliament know that people want to do away with animal testing.

Product testing should only be done on the species that potentially benefit from it. Animals being tortured for vanity purposes is beyond outrageous.

Why bother ? We should spend our money as much possible on futilities, spend our time without thinking beyond our comfort and go through life with eyes that shut out whatever could disturb our wellbeing. Human being is generally no VA. to the earth. I'm sorry.

I pray to God so that soon enough all of us come to the understanding that we should respect all forms of life!

I wish that all animal welfare groups worldwide would unite to strongly support the cause of all animals especially those found in developing countries.

There are child killers, etc. wasting tax payer dollars in jail that would be wonderful experimental subjects. Some of these actually did their own hideous experiments on innocent people and are alive to write books and give interviews about it without a shred of conscience. They may not have souls like most of us but they have the same skin so the experiments should prove effective. Leave innocent animals alone and use "real people". I'd like to even help out if I could.

WE ALL NEED TO TURN BACK TO NATURE AND ONLY NATURE. I READ A SPIRITUAL ARTICLE THAT SAYS, 'ANYTHING THAT LACKS INTEGRITY WILL JUST DISINTEGRATE', ANY FORM OF HARM TO ANOTHER LIVING THING IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, FORM OR MANNER WILL JUST CRUMBLE OUT OF EXISTANCE. AS MORE & MORE PEOPLE ARE AWARE OF THIS SORT OF TESTING, THE MORE PEOPLE WILL STOP BUYING THE PRODUCTS. IT IS LIKE THE DOLPHINS THAT HAVE BEEN KILLED IN TAJI. PEOPLE KNOW OF IT NOW, & IT IS ALL OVER THE PAPERS THERE & WORLD WIDE. DARWIN IN AUSTRALIA HAS CUT ITS SISTER TIE WITH TAJI UNTIL IT STOPS THE SLAUGHTER. SO TO, PEOPLE WON'T TOLERATE THIS SORT OF TORTURE OR CRUELTY. THOSE WHO DON'T CARE OBVIOUSLY DON'T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THEMSELVES EITHER ! THANKYOU CARE 2 FOR MAKING THIS ARTICLE AVAILABLE.

In the end & now, those who are the abusers will suffer & do suffer. Everything is linked, so harm done to another is triple folded back to them. The law of karma.

Loving peace & safety to all of life & may those who are experimenting out of ignorance may they seek other ways to live a cruelty free existance.

I have always said get the peodophiles, bomberrs, terroists, drug barons, and such like scum in the place of the innocents not giving them all a holiday. and i am so,so, sick of the thick good doers that say but their freedom is took away. so what the convicts still have a life the little victims that have no say tortured for being born.these are the victims that had their freedom and life took away the poor animals.and how many times haVE WE BEEN TOLD THE TESTS ARE OF NO USE OR CERTAIN OUTCOME/ HOW MANY TESTS HAVE BEEN BANNED FOR UP TO 40 YRS. AND STILL GOING ON IN HELL HOLES LIKE OXFORD LABS AND HUNTINGTON BOTH IN THE U.K. AND MANY, MANY, OTHERS.GET THE REAL CRIMINLAS IN THE LABS NOT THE INNOCENT. AND WHAT NO ONE SEMMS TO REALISE IF PRODUCTS DIDNT HAVE DANEROUS CHEMICALS IN THEM WE WOULDNT EVEN NEED THESE TESTS. BUT THEN 80% OF LABS JUST "TEST" FOR THE SIGHT OF THE SUFFERING AT THE HANDS OF THE"SCIENTISTS" WHAT A EVIL,VILE, CRUEL, SICK LOT OF BUTCHERS THESE LOT ARE AND BEING PAID A KINGS RANDSOM FOR TORTURING THESE NIMALS. THEY SHOULD DIE OF SHAME.
