Eight Women Sentenced to Death by Stoning in Iran

84 comments Eight Women Sentenced to Death by Stoning in Iran

Amnesty International, which has been fighting to end death by stoning in Iran, reports that 8 Iranian women have been sentenced to be stoned to death after being convicted of adultery and are in imminent danger of death.  This is particularly reprehensible considering Sunday was International Women’s Day.

The majority of those sentenced to death by stoning in Iran are women because they are not treated equally under the law in their country. The age of legal responsibility for women is lower than that of men and a woman’s testimony is only worth half as much as man’s. According to Amnesty International, women are also more likely to sign confessions for crimes they did not commit because the illiteracy rate for women is higher. Women are also more vulnerable to unfair arrests, trials, and convictions.

According to Amnesty International:

“Iran’s Penal Code prescribes execution by stoning. It even dictates that the stones are large enough to cause pain, but not so large as to kill the victim immediately. Article 102 of the Penal Code states that men should be buried up to their waists and women up to their breasts for the purpose of execution by stoning. Article 104 states, with reference to the penalty for adultery, that the stones used should “not be large enough to kill the person by one or two strikes; nor should they be so small that they could not be defined as stones”.

TAKE ACTION!  Sign the petition to stop stoning in Iran.

And how many of your men commit adultery over there??? Do they get stoned????? Yes they do! You don't stone them??? So your punishments should be equal! Women are a very valuable part of the economy. You should find other ways to deal with this.

Sorry jennifer; there is no Salvation in Islam;
No Lamb of God , No Blood, no Son of God.
These are not minor differences. It cannot be overlooked.
Don't look at me . Look at Him; on that cross for you.
They are NOT mutually inclusive.
Thank you Jesus.
There is therefore NOW; no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Romans; ch. 8

Why are the women only being punished ?it doesn't make sence, women who live under Muslim and Sharia law have no rights,it is a male dominated culture, they say Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance, the Koran ,which they live by regards anyone who is not Muslim as Infidels and they say in this wonderful book of peace,do not make friends of infidels, kill infidels ,their woman are confined to a nonenity, only being allowed out in the street with a relative, and then only if they are confined in the black bag that they are forced to wear, then of course there are the honour killings, because the daughter has been raped she has brought dishonour to the family so she has to die ,one case I read about the father and brother ran her over by car in the street,so what chance have these poor women got,my heart bleeds for them ,and Allah won't help them.

This has nothing to do with religion or justiz - it is barbarian.

I'd like to wager a bet that those old fundamentalist guys with long beards who are imposing stoning as a penalty on women caught in adultery, might be actually drooling on every woman they set their eye-balls on.

I'd like to ask what happened to the guys they were committing adultery with. Do they get off scot-free? or do they earn islamic brownie points for fucking loose?

Btw... I'm not a woman. But I stand for equal human, political, social and religious rights for women.

I just want to make a quick point regarding violence in the Koran. Yes, violence does occur in the Koran. However, has anyone really read the Bible lately? The Bible, especially the Old Testament is quite violent in its own right.

Love is the basis for both Christianity and Islam. Unfortunately, on both ends, you have zealots who misinterpret the Bible for their own whims.

Let's not forget as we are chastising all Muslims for being terrorists...Timothy McVeigh was a Christian!

It is hard to even imagine this kind of barbarism in this day & age!

Muslims claim they believe in Jesus, but if they really believed in Jesus they would also believe in "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" as Jesus said to those who were about to stone a woman accused of adultery (where was the male half of this adultery?)

I am so tired of hearing people say, as the person a couple of comments ago, that it isn't Islam that demands this kind of action, but people's misinterpretations of it. Have you read the Koran? Well, I'm in the process now & I can testify that it is a most unpleasant book. Violence, punishment & cruelty are there verse after verse. Mohammed himself led his followers in robbing caravans & murdering those who refused to accept him. What an example!

Iran is also the country that has murdered 4000 gay men since the founding of the Islamic state. Seven countries in the world have the death penalty for being born homosexual & they are all Muslim - the more "progressive" ones simply imprison them.

It wasn't long ago that Saudi Arabia, the seat of Islam, stoned a young teen to death after she was raped by her brother & his friends, was impregnated, forced to have the baby, then was stoned. Nothing was done to the brother or any of his rapist friends.

If Islam is a religion of peace& tolerance then where is the proof? These people must be challenged. The West must not turn away in silence from this barbar

Dolores makes crucial and valid points. Politically organized religion is the most dangerous terrorism that is facing the global society today. One of the most effective ways to curb or destroy the roots of such terrorsim is from the inside. I hope that all of us can give the Islamic women who want a change, the greatest strength, to cut their bonds and live in freedom.

Unfortunately only education and insight will change the actions of others. This is a tragedy. Mind you there is no mention of the men getting stoned for infidelity. I remember being in Kuwait seeing a muslem woman in a abaja who looked at me with such longing as her husband shoved her behind him and gave me a look of death. In her eyes was a longing to b free from her situation. I never forgot her nor will I.
